Abstract This article raises questions about the apparent opposition of two approaches that on the experience of literature and the arts have defined the academic tradition. On the one hand, the ...experience as "Experience" in the proposal of Jorge Larrosa (2006); on the other the "experience of understanding", viewed from the perspective of hermeneutics of Hans Jauss (1986), with essential contributions of the theory of George Gadamer (1993). The Paradox of Photography analyzes the discourse on photography by four of the most important modern French poets and theorists (Baudelaire, Breton, Barthes and Valéry). It stresses in particular ...the importance of this visual language for the development of both new forms of narrative and original critical studies on issues of representation in art. It also reflects upon the integration of photography within the domain of technical modernity while emphasizing its aesthetic identity stemming from the Western tradition of figurative painting.

This article argues for the relevance of what Paul Valéry called the “implex”, to philosophical areas of interest like potentiality and virtuality, and scientific areas of interest like developmental ...psychology and theories of learning. It offers an exposition of the wider context of Valéry’s coinage, by delving into his extensive notebooks, in addition to its immediate place of introduction, Idée fixe. As a majority of Valéry’s comments and reflections on the concept are suggestive and provisional, the article attempts to piece together a background that must have been generative for it. The implex is traced to its larger context of emergence through an engagement with several anticipatory or accompanying models like organs, machines and faculties.
Bien connu en tant que poète de La Jeune Parque, Paul Valéry (1871–1945) est également un intellectuel de premier ordre, dont la réflexion se situe à la croisée des univers littéraire et ...scientifique. En tant qu'amateur éclairé des sciences, il a fréquemment écrit au sujet de la science, notamment dans le contexte de ses réflexions littéraires. Ainsi, cette interrogation conjointe de la littérature et de la science constitue un des axes de questionnement centraux de son recueil d'essais Variété (1924–1944). Si cette problématique très valéryenne a déjà fait l'objet d'un certain nombre d’études évaluant la science chez Valéry à la lumière de sa « pensée », le présent article vise à rendre compte de la logique qui sous‐tend les référents scientifiques dans les essais de Variété, en recourant à l'outillage de l'analyse du discours.
This book interpretsMon Faustand explores the differences between Valéry's and Goethe's treatments of the Faust figure. The author shows by close analysis how Valéry opposes a Cartesian, ...anti-Pascalian Faust to Goethe's romantically flawed hero. The title of the project conceived by Valéry's Faust,The Mind's Body-part autobiography, part metaphysical treatise-embodies the Cartesian dilemma ironically illustrated by theMon Faustfragments: the misfortunes of the thinking essence, thecogito, in its subjugation to the body.
The first three chapters examine the Cartesian character of a Faust engaged in superhuman but vain attempts to reconcile the intellect and the libido. A fourth chapter discusses the differences between Goethe's and Valéry's protagonists and as well between Goethe and his Faust. Throughout the book the author explores Valéry's linguistic experimentation, which, through charades, paranomasia, onomastics, and etymological puns, brings into full play the mystifying and mythologizing aspects of language. To resolve the stylistic problems associated with this fragmentary work the author adapts the tone of his exegesis to the diverse stylistic levels ofMon Faust. His analysis illuminates the Cartesian potential inherent in Valéry's protagonist.

This paper offers a contextually inflected discussion of the extensive investment Paul Valéry makes in going beyond formal understandings of time. To this end it takes the processual work Cahiers as ...both a repository of insights, and a practical motor of conceptual creation for new time concepts through its very writing and production. In a speculative engagement with Valérian concepts such as phase, prolongation as well as reconfigured relations between central categorical pairings such as quality-quantity and succession-simultaneity, the paper situates Valéry’s writings on time with regard to their ambiguously critical attitude to a given image of philosophy as a form of verbal exercise ungrounded in empirical observation of local systems.
In response to Paul Valéry's claim that “philosophy is poetry,” Simone Weil set out to examine the nature of philosophical thinking. She argues that it is above all concerned with value. In the ...course of her argument, she lays out the grammatical differences between thinking about value, and other epistemological endeavours. These differences mean that inconsistencies are not to be avoided in philosophy, and that philosophy is not a matter of system building. In the end, she also believes that thinking philosophically requires one to possess the value of detachment, and hence a readiness to be transformed.
