Three generations of a family of lawyers have run a firm founded in 1893 in the small city of Becskerek (today in Serbian Zrenjanin), first part of the Austro-Hungarian Habsburg monarchy, then ...Hungary, then Yugoslavia, then for a while under German occupation, then again part of Yugoslavia and finally Serbia. In the Banat district of the province of Vojvodina, the multiplicity of languages and religions and changes of place-names was a matter of course. What is practically unprecedented, all files, folders and documents of the law office have survived. They concern marriages, divorces, births and testaments, as well as expulsions, emigrations, incarcerations and releases of these largely rural and small-town dwellers. Mundane cases reflect times through war, peace, revolution and counter-revolution, through serfdom and freedom, through comfort and poverty. The files also show everyday lives shaped in spite of history. Tibor Várady transforms them into affecting and vivid vignettes, selecting and commenting without sentimentality but with empathy. The law office of the three generations of the Várady family demonstrates that the legal profession permits and in difficult times even requires its members to defend the ordinary men and women against the powers of state and society.
?An attack on the police is an attack on the state? is a sentence we can
often hear when an event occurs in which police officers are injured or
killed. Victimologists often overlook police officers ...as victims, who are
not given much relevance, and such phenomena are rarely investigated. This
study aims to examine the characteristics of the situations in which crimes
against police officers occur. Police data of crimes against police officers
registered in the period 2017-2020 in the city of Zrenjanin, Serbia, were
categorically summarized and statistically processed, and the
characteristics of the situations in which the criminal offences occur were
analyzed. The results suggest that the victims are male police officers,
predominantly in uniform; mostl attacks take place in urban areas, at night,
while the perpetrators are younger than 34, often under the influence of
alcohol. The limitation of this research refers to the fact that it was
conducted on the territory of only one police department, and only certain
variables were taken into account that defines the characteristics of the
situations in which police officers are victimised.
Based on the available archival sources and newspaper writings, this paper provides the reader with a chronological overview of the efforts made by the National museum of Zrenjanin ever since1960’s ...to establish, nurture and further broaden connections with museums and other cultural institutions in Romania. Even though these efforts were rather modest in their beginnings – being dependent on constant lack of funds and often resulting in nothing more than a simple exchange of letters about good intentions – they slowly but steadily came to life. Favourable factor in this process was the use of common geographical background of Banat as a starting point in cooperation for both National museum of Zrenjanin and its Romanian counterparts. In course of the last three decades, starting from mid-1990's, National museum of Zrenjanin hosted about a dozen of cultural events such as exhibitions and conferences, dealing with Romanian themes or including Romanian participants.
This paper researches the attitude of the parents whose children are not disabled towards the inclusive program that is being implemented in sport schools. The aim of the research was to determine ...the parent's social distance in relation to the inclusive program, the children who have developmental disabilities, as well as their willingness to continue to participate in inclusive programs conducted in sports schools. The research was conducted during the period from 1st February to 1st March 2013 in the 'Zrenjanin' Karate club. It included 58 parents of non-disabled child athletes, members of the 'Zrenjanin' Karate club, already taking part in the inclusion program. The research conclusions indicate that most parents have a positive attitude towards the inclusive program, as well as towards people with developmental disabilities. It can also be concluded that the parents have a high level of readiness to help inclusive practice at the club. Also, most parents have a positive attitude towards inclusive camps. Very few parents think that it is not necessary to include defectologists in the inclusive program.
Industrial heritage tourism is a new form of tourism, which often involves reuse of abandoned industrial facilities for tourism purposes. Former industrial cities, affected by deindustrialization are ...looking for an opportunity to economically and socially revitalize themselves through this type of tourism, which is a general trend in developed countries. The subject of this paper is investigating possibilities for reuse of industrial heritage of the city of Zrenjanin in tourism purposes, which has been hit hard by deindustrialization due to wars, economic crisis and isolation during the last decade of the 20th century. Abandoned factory complexes that serve no purpose now occupy city center, but have an important tourist potential. Some of these complexes include Zrenjanin brewery, the old city slaughterhouse and abandoned facilities of Šinvoz factory. Adaptation of these buildings into cultural, sports and shopping centers would instigate the development of tourism in the city.
Starting from the concept of urban identity, defined as a set of unique
features characterizing a city/town that set it apart from others and ensure
its continuous recognizability, the paper takes ...the example of six urban
centers in Serbia (Kragujevac, Sabac, Uzice, Novi Pazar, Sombor and
Zrenjanin) to examine the degree of consensus or divergence concerning these
identities. Three dimensions i.e three kinds of tension that can arise
within, or in relation to, the established image of the locality are singled
out: 1) Crystallization: is a given urban identity clearly embodied in a
single symbol, and how coherent are the meanings of the constituent symbolic
elements? 2) Contention: is the city image disputed among various social
groups within its population? 3) Comparisons: how do these urban identities
relate to other urban centers and their respective identities? The analysis
is based on quantitative and qualitative data collected during 2013 and 2014
within the project? Characteristics of Territorial Capital in Serbia? of the
Institute for Sociological Research, Faculty of Philosophy, Belgrade.
The Begej Canal is one among a large number of canals in Vojvodina (Northern Province of Serbia and Montenegro). The paper describes a study of metal and radioactivity contamination of the Begej ...Canal sediment. It is also concerned with the evaluation of sediment acute toxicity based on standard test species
Daphnia magna and simultaneously extracted metals and acid volatile sulfides. The quality of sediment was assessed according to Dutch standards, but the results were also compared with some Canadian and USEPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency) guidelines for sediment quality.
The results showed severe pollution with chromium, copper, cadmium and zinc, whereby the anthropogenic origin of these contaminants was indicated. The tests of toxicity of sediment pore water to
D. magna, gave no indication of the presence of substances in acutely toxic concentrations to this species. It can be speculated that, despite of high metal contents, the observed toxicity was low because of the high contents of clay and iron, as well as sulphide. Also, based on a comparison with the Danube sediment and Vojvodina soil in general, the data of the Begej sediment contamination with
238U and
137Cs. The
137Cs data were used for approximate dating of the sediment. No traces of contamination by nuclear power plants in the region were found, while the presence of technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive materials (TENORM) was proved. Conclusions based on different criteria for sediment quality assessment were in some cases contradictory. Study also showed that radioactivity aspects can be useful in sediment quality surveys. The obtained results will be invaluable for the future activities regarding integrated water management based on EC Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) in the Danube basin, and particularly in the region of crossborder water body of the Begej Canal.
