The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of cultural cues on consumers' purchase decision of a sport merchandise product. Using a randomized experiment, two types of NBA team jersey, ...with or without cultural cues, were presented and participants answered questions regarding their attitude toward each variation. Their levels of acculturation to the United States and psychological connection with a sport team were measured to investigate whether these constructs impact the purchase decision-making process of culturally cued jersey. It was found that acculturated individuals selected the culturally cued jersey at a higher rate compared to unacculturated consumers. A significant interaction effect between attitude toward the English jersey and psychological connection suggests that those who have a strong psychological connection tend to select the original jersey. The results of this study examining the effectiveness of cultural cues in NBA merchandise designs provide empirical support for cultural targeted marketing strategies.
The interactions of the Celtic-speaking communities of Southern Gaul with the Mediterranean world have intrigued commentators since antiquity. This book combines sociolinguistics and archaeology to ...bring to life the multilingualism and multiple identities of the region from the foundation of the Greek colony of Massalia in 600 BC to the final phases of Roman Imperial power. It builds on the interest generated by the application of modern bilingualism theory to ancient evidence by modelling language contact and community dynamics and adopting an innovative interdisciplinary approach. This produces insights into the entanglements and evolving configurations of a dynamic zone of cultural contact. Key foci of contact-induced change are exposed and new interpretations of cultural phenomena highlight complex origins and influences from the entire Mediterranean koine. Southern Gaul reveals itself to be fertile ground for considering the major themes of multilingualism, ethnolinguistic vitality, multiple identities, colonialism and Mediterraneanization.
Richard Hingley here asks the questions: What is Romanization? Was Rome the first global culture? Romanization has been represented as a simple progression from barbarism to civilization. Roman forms ...in architecture, coinage, language and literature came to dominate the world from Britain to Syria. Hingley argues for a more complex and nuanced view in which Roman models provided the means for provincial elites to articulate their own concerns. Inhabitants of the Roman provinces were able to develop identities they never knew they had until Rome gave them the language to express them. Hingley draws together the threads of diverse and separate study, in one sophisticated theoretical framework that spans the whole Roman Empire. Students of Rome and those with an interest in classical cultural studies will find this an invaluable mine of information.
'A valuable addition to the scholarly literature.' - BMCR
'The explicit recognition of the complex relationship between past and present is one of the book's many strengths... a sophisticated and nuanced picture of 'Roman' identities... this book will do much to set the tone for a new generation of studies of the Roman World.' - Britannia

This qualitative, descriptive, and analytical research study aimed to describe the perception of Zamboangueño-Chabacano through a sociological lens. The examination of the data centers on Chabacano ...folklore gathered from several trustworthy sources. The enculturation and acculturation types of culture were used to categorize these non-material cultures. It is essential to comprehend Zamboangueo-Chabacano culture to preserve cultural traditions and develop programs that may be used in the classroom to promote greater literacy. Seventeen of the thirty-five described civilizations are enculturated, while 18 are acculturated. The Chabacano folklores that best capture the Zamboangueo-Chabacano culture emphasize respect for other people's languages, races, and cities, a firm belief in God, perseverance, diligence, courage, resourcefulness, and an acceptance of paranormal phenomena (kababalaghan). The research's findings corroborate the idea that the influence of Spanish culture and great devotion to Catholicism played an essential role in the lives of the Zamboangueño-Chabacano by showing that the majority of the culture depicted in Chabacano folklore is acculturation.
Migration to Northern countries is becoming increasingly important. In this context, the acculturation strategies or profiles that immigrant fathers adopt play a major role in their adaptation to their new life, particularly in the quality of their relationship with their children. The present study aimed to describe the acculturation strategies of fathers who had recently immigrated to Quebec and their associations with their parental engagement. Using a quantitative research design, immigrant fathers from sub-Saharan Africa, the Maghreb and Latin America responded to various questionnaires. Descriptive and predictive correlational analyses of their responses were conducted. The results indicate that the immigrant fathers in our sample present different acculturation profiles, the most prevalent being integration (30%) and marginalization (31%). Furthermore, fathers who present an integration or assimilation profile are more engaged with their children than fathers who adopt separation or marginalization strategies.
The role of acculturation in dietary behaviors among Hispanics/Latinos in the United States remains unclear. Discrepancies may be explained by variations in acculturation constructs or ...ethnicity-specific dynamics.
We aimed to compare relations between 3 different acculturation constructs with dietary quality and patterns among Puerto Ricans in the mainland United States.
We analyzed cross-sectional data with 1194–1380 Puerto Ricans, aged 45–75 y. Acculturation was measured with the use of a language-based scale (0–100; higher score denotes more English use), a psychological-based scale (0–50; higher score denotes stronger US orientation), and years living in the mainland United States. Diet quality scores (higher scores denote healthier diet) were defined with the use of the Alternate Healthy Eating Index-2010 (AHEI) and the Mediterranean Diet Score (MeDS). Three dietary patterns were previously derived with the use of principal components analysis. Adjusted multivariable regression models tested the association of each acculturation construct with diet quality score or pattern. Interaction terms were included for income or education status.
Psychological-based acculturation, but not the other constructs, was positively associated with AHEI (β ± SE: 0.013 ± 0.004; P = 0.002) and MeDS (0.009 ± 0.005; P = 0.041). Income, but not education, moderated this association (P = 0.03), with higher diet quality observed with higher income (>$25,000) and stronger US orientation. All constructs were inversely associated with a traditional dietary pattern, with the language-based scale being stronger (z score β ± SE: −0.160 ± 0.032; P < 0.0001) than the psychological-based scale (−0.097 ± 0.028; P = 0.001) or years living in the mainland United States (−0.058 ± 0.028; P = 0.041). No associations were observed for the Western or sweets/desserts patterns.
In Puerto Rican adults, stronger psychological US orientation was associated with higher diet quality, particularly with higher income. More Spanish use, stronger psychological Puerto Rican orientation, and shorter length of mainland-US residency were associated with traditional dietary patterns. Appropriate diet-related acculturation constructs should be carefully considered among Hispanics/Latinos. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT01231958.
Background: Most published associations between daily food choices and cardiometabolic outcomes have ignored the mediational role of the gut microbiota. There is increasing consensus about what foods ...are rich in microbiota-accessible substrate (e.g., whole fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, etc.), which we term "highly microbiota-accessible foods" (HMAFs). Latino adults have a higher proportion of obesity compared to White adults, possibly because of a lack of HMAFs. Latino acculturation to U.S. has been associated with increased intake of standard American highly processed foods, but whether increasing the number of HMAFs consumed daily reduces Latino obesity risk has not been examined. Methods: Data from the 2015-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of Latino/Hispanic adults (>20 years, N=1,034) were analyzed. The number of HMAFs consumed was calculated from 24-hour dietary recall data. Non-animal foods classified as "minimally processed" according to the NOVA classification were categorized as HMAFs. Indicators of acculturation included the language spoken at home and duration of time spent in the US. All regressions included sex, education, age, and food security status as covariates. Ordered logistic regression was used to evaluate associations between acculturation and HMAFs. Results: Overall weighted prevalence of obesity in this sample was 44.3%. The mean number of HMAFs consumed was 2.1 (range 0-6). The mean acculturation proxy of language preference in the home was 2.7 (range 1-5). Mean acculturation proxy of years spent living in the US was 4.8 (range 1-9). Language spoken (p<.05) and duration in the US (p<.05) were both negatively associated with HMAFs. Conclusions: Greater acculturation to the US in adult Latinos is associated with lower HMAF intake (p<.05). Higher HMAF intake is associated with reduced Latino obesity risk (p<.05). Future research is needed to confirm the potential obesity prevention and treatment benefit of increasing Latino HMAF intake.
Os grandes castros foram rodeados de muralhas, e estátuas de guerreiros tutelavam as portas, porque Roma permitiu e até mesmo potençiou como un elemento da sua política de aculturação.
