This study scrutinizes how the viewers reacted to the Iraqi Action Movie "Mosul," subtitled into English. The study designed a questionnaire of 22 items and disseminated it to undergraduate and ...postgraduate students who are specialists in English Language and Translation studies at three Iraqi Universities. They were asked to watch the subtitled version of the Iraqi dialect movie Mosul. They responded to a 21-item questionnaire of five constructs, mainly movie-watching habits, Iraqi vernacular, technical aspects, Comprehensibility, attitudes, and future recommendations. The analysis revealed that the participants responded positively to the interlingual subtitling of Iraqi vernacular action movies into English. The study analysis showed statistically significant evidence that people prefer to watch Iraqi movies subtitled interlingually into English than those subtitled interlingually in Modern Standard Arabic.
Subtitling lyrics poses a problem regarding conveying the content and the form, which include meaning, rhyme, rhythm, and other musical features. This requires having well-trained professional ...translators to master the rendering of those features in the target language, bearing in mind the constraints imposed by subtitling as an audio-visual mode. This study examines the Arabic subtitled version of English movie lyrics and explores the translator’s options in rendering their content and form. To this end, sixteen lyrics were extracted from five movies that have been subtitled. The compiled lyrics were classified into different categories based on the translation options proposed by Franzon (2008). The option of “translating lyrics without taking the music into consideration” was used 11 times, while the option of “aesthetic translation” was opted for four times. “Not translating the lyric” was used only once, while the option of “creating new lyrics for the music” was not adopted in any of the five movies. The study recommends two research areas: exploring dubbed Arabic versions of English movie lyrics and analyzing subtitled lyrics in other language pairs.
Background. Subtitling as a type of audiovisual translation has gained great popularity in recent decades. Compared to other types of audiovisual translation, the production of subtitles for films, ...TV series, and animated films takes less time and requires fewer financial costs. Purpose. The purpose of this article is to identify the difficulties faced by a translator in the subtitled translation of animated films. To do this, it is necessary to identify the essence and features of subtitling; identify the difficulties that translators may face in the process of subtitled translation; determine strategies for subtitled translation of animated films. Materials and Methods. To solve the tasks set, both theoretical and practical research methods were used: analysis of literature on translation theory and audiovisual translation as a special aspect of translation studies; analysis and interpretation of strategies for subtitled translation of the Strange Planet animated series. Results. The results of the study showed that audiovisual translation is a special type of translation, which includes the adaptation of texts with a complex structure combining elements coming through different channels of perception. Animated films also belong to such texts. The paper lists the features of their subtitling using the example of translating the Strange Planet cartoon series from English to Russian. Practical implications. The results of the research can be used in the practical activities of the translator, when compiling subtitles for animated films.
This piece of research, which is part of a project concerned with the translatability of figurative language in AV content from English into Arabic and vice versa, investigates the translatability of ...visual puns in the animated movie Shark Tale from English into Arabic in both its subtitled and dubbed versions. The data of this study consist of the original English film scenes and their Arabic subtitles and dubs. Based on Aleksandrova’s (2019) taxonomy, which treats pun translation as a cognitive game in the translator’s mind, it was confirmed that puns can be translated by accepting the game of translation using two different strategies: (a) Quasi-translation: where the translator preserves one of the signs of the original pun and replaces the other with a suitable one from the target language. (b) Free Translation: where the translator replaces the two signs of the source pun with new signs from the target language. It was also confirmed that the game of translation can be rejected by using Literal Translation where the translator literally translates the pun into the target language. Another minor issue raised in this study is that visual puns and complex puns that are culturally very local are subject to be ignored by No Translation, which is the omission of the linguistic host of pun. The current study concludes by providing some implications and solutions for translators dealing with pun in animated films.
Society is characterized by a constant flow of multimodal products, which increasingly blur the lines between screen and reality, and audiovisual translation allows overcoming geographical and ...linguistic frontiers between small realities across the planet. However, research has long struggled to adapt its methodologies to effectively analyze such phenomena, and even more to scale its results through larger corpus analyses.
Dora Renna proposes a pioneering framework, informed by the latest trends in audiovisual translation and multimodality and fit to achieve the complex task of operatively including multimodality in a rigorous corpus analysis of source and target versions of films characterized by language variation as a key element of character design.
While language is at the core of her analysis, its role in the broader audiovisual context is explored thanks to a solid network of relations that shed light on linguistic and translational choices as well as on their implications. Framework and methodology are explained in detail and thoroughly applied to the case study to show how this perspective contributes to move a step forward in corpus-based audiovisual translation studies. The results obtained are unexpected and urge readers to overcome old attitudes towards audiovisual translation and multimodal corpora.
The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region has an active gaming community, with Arab gamers being reliant on games produced in Europe, America, and Japan due to the lack of significant game ...production companies in the MENA region. This study explores the gamers’ reactions to the localization process of two video games, namely PUBG and Free Fire. For data collection purposes, a five-point Likert scale questionnaire that consisted of 18 items and six constructs, namely need for subtitled games, technical aspects, language issues, language preference, attitudes to game localization, and future actions and recommendations, was designed to elicit the reactions of 112 participants. Upon analyzing the responses, the findings showed that the better the technical aspects and language issues of the games’ performance, the more positive participants’ attitudes to game localization. The study recommends that further research could be conducted on the localization of video games with different themes into Arabic.

Video game localization is the process of adjusting a current video game to make it available, usable, and culturally appropriate to the target audience. This study aims to investigate the strategies ...that translators use in localizing

video games into Arabic. The data were extracted from interfaces and in-game captions of the two video games. Due to space constraints, a representative subset of the collected data was then selected and analysed according to the translation strategies proposed by Díaz-Cintas, and Remael (2014). The analysis showed that the localizers have more often used transposition and literal translation strategies. They also tried to adapt the text to suit the target-language culture as much as possible. The findings of this study will be helpful to translators, localizers, and trainers. By adopting the most relevant translation strategies outlined in this article, game localizers will hopefully be better equipped with the mechanisms of video game localization. The current piece of work calls for investing more research efforts towards exploring and targeting a broader array of video game genres in Arabic.
This paper examines the phenomenon of Arabic fansubtitling of Western stand-up comedy through a sample of fifteen clips found on YouTube to evaluate how fansubtitlers approach the extra- linguistic ...cultural references in the clips. In this textual analysis of the sample clips, we identify some of the techniques most commonly used in rendering the extra-linguistic cultural references such as retention of the original reference, omission, or literal translation. We conclude that literal translation is the most common problem in rendering the meaning of cultural references. To help the viewer interact with the clips, we recommend keeping the original reference and providing a short explication which would often give the viewers the best experience of the clip and the cultural knowledge contained in it. This paper argues that despite the problems with the quality of some of the subtitles they produce, fansubtitlers are changing the profession of translation. Some have developed creative ways to explain the cultural references using pictures, animations, and glossary lists. Moreover, they contribute to the globalization of Western culture, but at the same time reshape the discourse around these clips by integrating them within local debates about politics, social customs, and ethics. Those clips emerge as sites where viewers contend with identity and their place in the world.
