Les figurines découvertes dans des grottes du Jura souabe ont été datées de l’Aurignacien depuis près d’un demi siècle à la suite des travaux de J. Hahn, mais ce n’était pas l’avis des découvreurs ...dans les sites Vogelherd et d’Hohlenstien Stadel. La datation de ces sculptures soulève des questions au sujet des premiers développements de l’art figuratif. Cet article examine la validité des arguments présentés sur les âges radiométriques au regard des situations stratigraphiques. Une chronologie plus variée de cet art mobilier devient claire : selon nous, de nombreuses pièces de Vogelherd et de Hohle Fels datent du Gravettien, alors que d’autres de Vogelherd et Hohlenstein Stadel datent du Magdalénien. Les arguments en faveur de l’Aurignacien ne résistent pas à l’examen critique.
The portable art discovered in the caves of the Swabian Jura has been dated to the Aurignacian for almost half a century, following work by J. Hahn, but that was not the opinion of the discoverers at the sites of Vogelherd and Hohlenstein Stadel. The dating of these figurines poses questions about the first development of figurative art. This paper examines the validity of the arguments presented about radiometric ages of the finds comparing to their stratigraphic locations. A varied chronology for these artworks becomes clear: in our view, some pieces from Vogelherd and Hohle Fels date to the Gravettian, while others from Vogelherd and Hohlenstein Stadel date to the Magdalenian. The arguments in favour of the Aurignacian do not hold up to critical examination.
The so-called bone retouchers have been the subjects of numerous studies examining them from different points of view and in various chronological and geographic contexts. However, the study of these ...tools has rarely been carried out in conjunction with data from lithic typology and technology studies and archaeozoological research, to understand the context in which retouchers were made and used. In this paper, we examined the technological and functional aspects of the retouchers recovered in the Proto-Aurignacian and the Early Aurignacian levels of Labeko Koba. Our study shows that the retouchers of these two techno-complexes of Labeko share several features but also some differences. The exploitation of bones in the Early Upper Palaeolithic EUP levels at Labeko Koba, represented mainly by the retouchers, cannot be regarded as complex. This behaviour is part of a technical tradition that has its roots in the Middle Palaeolithic.
Les objets dénommés « retouchoirs en os » ont fait l’objet de nombreuses études menées selon différents points de vue et dans des contextes chronologiques et géographiques variés. Cependant, l’analyse de ces outils a rarement été réalisée de manière coordonnée avec les données provenant des études de technologie et de typologie lithique ainsi que des recherches archéozoologiques, de manière à comprendre le contexte dans lequel les retouchoirs ont été faits et utilisés. Dans cet article, nous examinerons les aspects technologiques et fonctionnels des retouchoirs retrouvés dans les niveaux du Proto-Aurignacien et de l’Aurignacien ancien de Labeko Koba. Notre travail montre que les retouchoirs de ces deux technocomplexes de Labeko Koba ont en commun plusieurs caractéristiques, mais présentent aussi des différences. L’exploitation des os des niveaux du Paléolithique supérieur initial de Labeko Koba, principalement représentés par des retouchoirs, ne peut pas être considérée comme étant complexe. Ce comportement fait partie des traditions techniques qui ont pris leurs racines au Paléolithique moyen.
This study aims to obtain a chronological and cultural framework of the Evolved Aurignacian in the central Iberian Mediterranean basin and find agreement between this framework and other sequences of ...the Iberian southeast. Over the last few years, there has been remarkable progress in the research of the Evolved Aurignacian sites in the Valencian area, making a review of the main characteristics of the technocomplex on a regional scale necessary. The recent fieldwork carried out in Cova de les Malladetes (Valencia) and in Cova de les Cendres (Alicante) have been key to understanding the lithic, osseous and ornament assemblages ascribed to the Evolved Aurignacian. Several Bayesian modelled ages have been constructed from the large dataset of chronological dates obtained at Malladetes and Cendres, as well as in other sites. The Bayesian models have allowed us to chronologically place the characteristics of the analysed assemblages. The present research supports the importance of the Aurignacian as the first technocomplex of the Upper Palaeolithic in this area of the Iberian Peninsula.
Cette étude se propose d’obtenir un contexte chronologique et culturel de l’Aurignacien évolué de la côte méditerranéenne centrale ibérique et sa cohérence avec d’autres séquences du sud-est ibérique. Ces dernières années, la recherche dans des sites à séquences aurignaciennes évoluées dans la région de Valence a connu un progrès remarquable, ce qui rend nécessaire de revoir les principales caractéristiques du technocomplexe au niveau régional. Les récents travaux effectués à Cova de les Malladetes (Valencia) et à Cova de les Cendres (Alicante) ont été essentiels pour comprendre les assemblages lithiques, osseux et ornementaux attribués à l’Aurignacien évolué. Plusieurs modèles bayésiens ont été développés à partir des séries de dates au radiocarbone obtenues aux Malladetes et aux Cendres, ainsi que dans d’autres sites. Les modèles bayésiens nous ont permis de situer chronologiquement les caractéristiques des assemblages analysés. Ces recherches confirment l’importance de l’Aurignacien en tant que premier technocomplexe du Paléolithique supérieur dans cette région de la Péninsule Ibérique.
Les petites perles à perforation double en ivoire sont des éléments importants des inventaires aurignaciens du sud-ouest de l’Allemagne. Soutenu par sa longue expérience des outils lithiques ...préhistoriques, l’auteur a tenté une approche expérimentale de la production de ces minuscules joyaux en étant aussi proche que possible des pièces archéologiques.
The small double perforated ivory beads are an important category of finds in the southwestern Germany during the Aurignacian. Thanks to his long experience in working with prehistoric lithic tools, the author tried to produce experimentally these tiny jewels being as close as possible to the archaeological pieces.
Mitoc–Malu Galben (Romania) is one of the key-sites for the Upper Palaeolithic in Eastern Europe, with abundant Upper Palaeolithic archaeological layers embedded in a ∼14 meters long loess-palaeosol ...sequence. The excavations in 1978–1990 yielded rich remains of Aurignacian and Gravettian workshops. From 1992 to 1995, an international collaboration helped better define their stratigraphical position, age, and typological characteristics. Since 2013, our team has conducted new fieldwork focusing on interdisciplinary study of site formation processes and a detailed technological study of the lithic artefacts. These different excavation phases have employed quite substantially different fieldwork methodologies. Here, we explore the impact of the changing excavation methodologies on the comparability of the generated assemblages by analyzing the frequency of bladelets among the elongated blanks as well as the length distribution of elongated blanks. Our preliminary study allows us to suggest that some of the assemblages seem to be influenced by the fieldwork methodology employed by each excavation phase, but more studies are needed to start to understand how the assemblages are biased.
Mitoc-Malu Galben (Roumanie) est un site-clé du Paléolithique supérieur en Europe orientale. Il est doté d’une séquence stratigraphique de près de 14m de puissance incluant de nombreux paléosols et plusieurs niveaux archéologiques du Paléolithique supérieur. Entre 1978 et 1990, des fouilles extensives ont livré de riches vestiges d’ateliers de débitage aurignaciens et gravettiens. De 1992 à 1995, une collaboration internationale a permis de mieux définir la position stratigraphique de ces vestiges, leur âge et leurs caractéristiques typologiques. Depuis 2013, notre équipe a mené de nouveaux travaux de terrain focalisés sur l’étude interdisciplinaire des processus de formation du site et sur une étude technologique détaillée des artefacts lithiques. Les différentes phases de fouilles que le site a connues ont mis en œuvre des méthodologies parfois très différentes. Nous étudions ici l’impact de ces changements méthodologiques dans la fouille sur la comparabilité des ensembles identifiés, en analysant la fréquence des lamelles au sein des supports allongés ainsi que la distribution de la longueur des supports allongés. Notre étude préliminaire permet de suggérer que certains ensembles semblent avoir été influencés par les méthodologies de fouilles lors de ces différentes phases du travail de terrain, mais d’autres analyses sont nécessaires pour comprendre précisément comment ces ensembles ont été biaisés.
Les traditions culturelles manifestées en technologie lithique, les modes de vies et les éléments de la culture symbolique ont présenté, dans la phase ancienne du Paléolithique supérieur, une ...structure assez complexe. Nous pouvons subdiviser ces traditions en relation avec leur origine, leur extension géographique, leur chronologie et partiellement leur type anthropologique. Les traditions locales sont liées principalement au substrat néanderthalien, par opposition aux traditions allogènes liées aux Hommes anatomiquement modernes. Du point de vue techno-culturel, nous pouvons distinguer : les traditions développées sur le fonds local caractérisées par la technologie levalloisienne ou moustéro-levalloisienne, les traditions développées sur le fonds local à technologie bifaciale micoquienne, les traditions développées des coutumes laminaires et/ou bifaciales du Paléolithique moyen, opposées aux traditions allogènes liées aux migrations des Hommes anatomiquement modernes du Proche Orient.
In the early phase of the Upper Palaeolithic the cultural traditions that were expressed in lithic technology, way of life, also in various elements of symbolic culture had a complex nature. They can be divided in terms of derivation, occupied territory, chronology, and – partially – the anthropological type of a given population. The traditions whose origins were local were in all likelihood related to the Neanderthals, whereas those whose origins were exogeneous were connected with Anatomically Modern Humans. In terms of technologal-stylistics in the initial phase of the Upper Palaeolithic, we can distinguish autochthonous traditions rooted in a local Levallois or Moustero-Levallois substratum, traditions developped from a local Micoquian substratum with bifacial technology, and traditions rooted in the industries with blade and bifacial technologies of the Middle Palaeolithic. These are opposed to allochtonous traditions that can be related to the migrations of Anatomically Modern Humans from the Near East.

The decorated cave of Coliboaia in Romania has been claimed to date to the Aurignacian period, and to supply support for the Aurignacian attribution of France's Chauvet cave. In this paper, we ...examine the evidence and show that neither the radiocarbon dates obtained at Coliboaia nor the style and content of its cave art correspond to the Aurignacian period, and that comparisons with Chauvet cave – itself badly dated and erroneously attributed – are equally ill-founded. We also show that both caves are in regions which are bereft of Aurignacian occupation, and neither cave contains any artefacts from the period.
La grotte ornée de Coliboaia en Roumanie, jusqu’à présent attribuée à la période aurignacienne, a servi de référence pour l’attribution aurignacienne de la grotte Chauvet en France. Dans cet article, nous allons pourtant démontrer le fait que ni les artefacts qui y ont été découverts, en raison de leur style et leur typologie, ni les datations au radiocarbone obtenues à Coliboaia ne correspondent à la période aurignacienne ; par conséquent la comparaison de cette grotte avec la grotte Chauvet – elle-même inexactement datée et attribuée – ne se justifie pas. De même, nous allons souligner que les deux grottes se trouvent dans des régions où il n’y a pas d’occupations aurignaciennes et que celles-ci manquent d’artefacts remontant à cette période.
Here we present an overview of the personal ornaments of the Swabian Aurignacian and the Early Aurignacian sites of south-western France made from mammoth ivory. The production sequences for the ...serial manufacture of beads from these sites are quite similar. While the Swabian sites have yielded numerous different types of beads with a focus of the double-perforated bead, the nearly exclusive use of one bead-type, the perle en forme de panier, is striking at the sites of south-western France. Following the presentation of major inventories of ivory ornaments in the two regions concerned, we discuss potential factors underlying both the differences and the similarities we observe in these assemblages.
Les chaînes opératoires pour la production en série des perles en ivoire de l’Aurignacien du Jura Souabe en Allemagne et de l’Aurignacien ancien du sud-ouest de la France sont similaires, même si les résultats finaux sont distincts entre ces deux régions. Les sites du Jura Souabe ont livré de nombreux types de perles, parmi lesquelles celles à double-perforation sont les plus fréquentes, alors que dans le sud-ouest de la France, l’utilisation des perles en forme de panier est presque exclusive. Suite à la présentation des riches inventaires d’objets de parure en ivoire issus de ces deux régions, nous discuterons des facteurs susceptibles d’expliquer les similitudes et les différences que nous avons observées entre ces deux groupes.

Dans la région du Jura souabe, quatre grottes, Hohle Fels et Geißenklösterle dans la vallée de l’Ach, Vogelherd et Hohlenstein-Stadel dans la vallée de la Lone, présentent des niveaux archéologiques ...aurignaciens particulièrement riches en objets en ivoire. Outre, les centaines d’outils, elles ont livré des dizaines d’œuvres figuratives mobilières et plusieurs instruments de musique, fabriqués en os et en ivoire. Ceux-ci sont parmi les plus anciens exemples de l’art et de la musique au monde. Nous présentons une version résumée et une mise à jour des données pour les figurines publiées jusqu’à présent, ainsi que les résultats récents concernant les objets d’art et les marquages symboliques sur les objets en ivoire provenant des fouilles anciennes et récentes.
In the region of the Swabian Jura, four caves, Hohle Fels and Geißenklösterle in the Ach Valley, and Vogelherd and Hohlenstein-Stadel in the Lone Valley, have particularly rich Aurignacian layers. Beside hundreds of ivory tools, they delivered dozens of mobile figurative artworks and several musical instruments made from bone and ivory. They are among the oldest examples of art and music worldwide. In this paper, we present a summarized and updated version of the so far published figurines and recent results concerning art objects and symbolic markings on ivory artefacts from old and recent excavations.
The Mohelno-Plevovce site, located in Moravia (Czech Republic), has yielded two stone structures that represent the remains of two different short occupations. The chronology of these occupations ...situates them in the midst of the Last Glacial Maximum, and the techno-typological features of the lithic assemblages link them with the recently defined ‘Epi-Aurignacian with Sagaidak–Muralovka-type microliths’. High power use-wear analysis of representative lithic samples from the two stone structures has been carried out to understand site function and the particular uses made of the different tool types represented at the site. The results of the use-wear analysis are used to test whether these occupations represent the archaeological signatures of pioneer populations that reoccupied the Moravia region, which had previously been abandoned by human populations due to the climatic hardships of the Last Glacial Maximum.
Le site de Mohelno-Plevovce localisé en Moravie (République tchèque) a fourni deux structures de pierre qui représentent les restes de deux occupations courtes différentes. La chronologie de ces occupations les situent au milieu du dernier maximum glaciaire et leurs traits technotypologiques les relient à l’« Épi-Aurignacien avec des microlites de type Sagaidak–Muralovka ». L’analyse fonctionelle de haute puissance d’échantillons lithiques représentatifs des deux structures de pierre a été entreprise pour tenter de comprendre la fonction du site et les utilisations particulières des différents types d’outils représentés sur le site. Les résultats de l’analyse fonctionelle ont été utilisés pour tester si ces occupations représentent les signatures archéologiques de populations pionnières qui ont réoccupé cette région de Moravie, précédemment abandonnée en raison des épreuves climatiques dues au dernier maximum glaciaire.
