It is a special priority of bibliotherapy to deal with those who stay hospitalized for a long time or are subjected to frequent and monotonous treatment. This target group obviously includes health ...care professionals serving these groups as well as the families of patients. In Hungary today clinical bibliotherapy is exercised mainly in psychiatric institutions. Earlier, bibliotherapy was classified as a kind of sociotherapy and aimed at developing social and verbal skills and educating people how to spend their free time usefully. Bibliotherapy interpreted as psychotherapy with art has, however, got deeper-rooted and longer-term therapeutic objectives. Therapists need the same abilities -- independent of locations and target groups -- as in the case of developing bibliotherapy groups: to assist participants to formulate their fears, to strengthen their self-knowledge, and to help their rehabilitation by processing well-selected texts at the sessions.
Extremely shy children may find themselves somehow isolated from society and feel alone. This may cause them to experience different problems at home, at school and in the community. If this ...situation continues in the following years, the difficulties they experience in life will increase and the probability of their emergence as mental problems such as childhood loneliness, social anxiety disorders, depression and anxiety disorders that negatively affect their quality of life will increase. Thus, it is important to intervene in childhood shyness, social isolation, loneliness, and behavioral inhibition in order to eliminate possible problems that may be experienced in childhood and at the same time to prevent the continuation of the situation in adolescence and adulthood. Developmental bibliotherapy can be used in the context of both prevention and early intervention studies for shyness in early childhood with extremely shy children. In this context, the aim of this study is to provide an in-depth perspective on the concepts of extreme shyness and bibliotherapy, and to present an example of a developmental bibliotherapy session that can be experienced with extremely shy children who are between five to eight years old in early childood period and a sample book list that can be used in the sessions.."
The aim of the present study was to explore the effectiveness of bibliotherapy in rehabilitation settings. The term bibliotherapy, coined in the 1930’s by the psychiatrist William Menninger, conveys ...the importance of reading as a tool for cultural promotion and growth, as a means through which to acquire knowledge, enhance one's cognitive and emotional abilities, develop strategies for managing discomfort, as well as a psychoeducational and cognitive technique in the psychotherapeutic field. A study carried out on Pubmed showed that recent research on bibliotherapy, in particular experimental research, would be lacking and requires a humanistic medical approach, drawing on the knowledge and methods of psychology and cognitive literary studies, as well as clinical disciplines to broaden our understanding of how the dynamic processes of interpretation mediate between the textual and characteristic structures of mental health and illness. This narrative review was conducted on PubMed database and used two key terms “Bibliotherapy” AND “rehabilitation” AND “prison”. Studies in line with this specific issue were included. The search of PubMed database provided a total of 470 items recruited online; of these 464 studies were excluded according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. After the screening, a total of 6 studies assessing the bibliotherapy in rehabilitation setting, met the inclusion criteria and were included in the narrative review. Bibliotherapy as a self-help approach also in psychotherapeutic treatments can activate the desire to seek changes in attitudes and behaviour, to acquire knowledge of symptoms, and the value of self-care. A psychological intervention self-administered through ACT bibliotherapy with minimal therapeutic support can improve the physical and emotional functioning of adults with chronic pain. If studies report the efficacy of parent-mediated bibliotherapy in situations of childhood anxiety, nocturnal fears, specific phobias, in adolescence chatbot-delivered self-help depression intervention was proven to be superior to the minimal level of bibliotherapy in terms of reduction on depression and anxiety. Bibliotherapy interventions may be helpful to fight against weight gain and potentially facilitate smoking cessation.
Students come to schools and college to not only learn academic subjects but also gain personal effectiveness skills for life. During the developmental and transition phase of growing up, young ...students can face a lot of issues and problems related to the self and their surroundings. The participants of this research were post-graduate management students who suffered from a lack of self-management skills. A reading course/intervention based on Shrodes (1950) model of bibliotherapy was developed. Using developmental and didactic bibliotherapy based on CBT a short reading course was conducted with 138 students. Reflective writing and discussion activities were conducted along with group reading. The impact of the reading course/intervention was analyzed using descriptive research methods (paired sample t-test) and qualitative reading of the reflective writing. The intervention has been successful in bringing positive habit formation and attitude change in the students.
This study aimed to investigate how interactive bibliotherapy impacted the emotional healing process of adolescents with cancer, drawing upon the three-stage emotional healing process ...theory–identification, catharsis, and insight.
A qualitative descriptive study was conducted on data from 14 adolescents, aged 10–19 years, diagnosed with or relapsing from leukemia or osteosarcoma within the past two years. Participants received two interactive bibliotherapy sessions using The Rabbit Listened and You Are Special. Data were collected through semistructured interviews and content analyzed.
Analysis identified six themes in The Rabbit Listened and eight in You Are Special. Adolescents primarily engaged in identification, empathizing with protagonists and recalling personal experiences. They underwent catharsis, releasing negative emotions and fostering positivity. Insights emerged on companionship, listening, and others’ criticism.
Our study validates the use of the three-stage emotional healing process in interdisciplinary bibliotherapy for understanding emotional changes in adolescents with cancer. It sheds light on their concerns and coping strategies. Healthcare practitioners can utilize interactive bibliotherapy based on this framework to initiate therapeutic communication with adolescent cancer patients and improve interventions and care.
•The three-stage process elucidates adolescent cancer patients' emotions.•During bibliotherapy, adolescents expressed and shared emotions and coping strategies.•Recommend three-stage bibliotherapy for better adolescent cancer care.
Sudden lifestyle changes and disruption necessitated by the COVID-19 precautionary measures resulted in children becoming frightened, bored, isolated and anxious which automatically posed a threat to ...their emotional and psychological wellbeing. These set of children could be helped through therapeutic reading of books. Reading stories provides children with opportunities to gain insight and learn healthier ways to face the uncertainty caused by their inability to do things that they normally do like going to school, visit friends, go to parties, visit parks, visit the library and so on. The study used a prestest - posttest quasi- experimental methodology which lasted for a duration of 10 weeks, the study population were twenty-five (25) within the age bracket of 7-16 years old. The study concluded that bibliotherapy is an effective tool in helping children to learn more about the coronavirus, help them to calm down, change their perspective and become more confident about the situation while looking forward to eventual reopening of the country.
Extreme thoughts about moderate Islam are often the beginning of divisions. A shallow understanding of religious moderation makes it easier for someone to be indicated by radical views. Counselors ...have an essential role in increasing students' understanding of religious moderation. This study aims to improve students' understanding of religious moderation in public schools through group guidance using bibliotherapy techniques. This study used a quasi-experimental method with a Non-equivalent control group design. The sample of this research was 20 students, consisting of 10 students for each experimental and control group, per Gazda's (1969) recommendations regarding the adequate number of group guidance participants, ranging from 8 to 10 participants. The sample has filled out the Religious Moderation Scale (RMS) developed by Monalisa (2022) and is indicated to be in a low category. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed rank test to determine the effect before and after the intervention was given. Then, to find out the average difference between the experimental group and the control group, it was analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test. The study's results showed a difference in understanding of religious moderation before and after the intervention, with a significance of .005. The research results showed that the group guidance intervention using bibliotherapy techniques was effective in increasing students' understanding of religious moderation with a Z score of -3.885 and a significance value of .000.
Literature shows bibliotherapy can be helpful for moderate depression treatment. The aim of this systematic review is to verify the long-term effects of bibliotherapy.
After bibliographic research, ...we included RCTs articles about bibliotherapy programme treatment of depression published in English language between 1990 and July 2017. All RCTs were assessed with Cochrane's Risk of Bias tool.
Ten articles (reporting 8 studies involving 1347 subjects) out of 306 retrieved results were included. All studies analyze the effects of bibliotherapy after follow-up periods ranging from 3months to 3years and show quiet good quality in methods and analyses. The treatment was compared to standard treatments or no intervention in all studies. After long-term period follow-ups, six studies, including adults, reported a decrease of depressive symptoms, while four studies including young people did not show significant results.
Bibliotherapy appears to be effective in the reduction of adults depressive symptoms in the long-term period, providing an affordable prompt treatment that could reduce further medications. The results of the present review suggest that bibliotherapy could play an important role in the treatment of a serious mental health issue. Further studies should be conducted to strengthen the evidence of bibliotherapy's efficacy.
•Investigate the presence of durable effects of bibliotherapy on depressive symptoms•Self-help therapy versus standard guided interventions•Differences of treatment effects between adults and younger population•Research of affordable and prompt depression therapies
This article in the field of bibliotherapy investigates how participation in a reading circle can contribute to psychological well-being in people with mental illness such as long-term depression and ...anxiety. The perspective employed is user-centered and focused on the users' statements about their health and well-being. Through a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, the study which the article is based on, showed that participants had short-term improved psychological well-being after participating in a guided reading circle. Interviews clarified that their social well-being had been positively influenced in various ways, including greater self-confidence and increased social interaction. The choice of - short stories and poetry - was significant to the positive results achieved by the participants, as were the discussions about the texts, the presence of a circle leader with good leadership qualities, and the opportunity to be included in a group whose membership remained constant throughout the series of sessions.
This contribution reviews both theoretical and empirical research on the effects of absorbed reading and bibliotherapy on subjective psychological well-being, paying special attention to the possible ...influence of digitization on this relationship. Reading on tablets, for example, could prove counter-productive for obtaining a state of absorption and thus modern-day tablet-readers may miss out on potential health benefits that absorbed reading of literature might provide. On the other hand, the connection that tablets provide to online reader communities and thus online bibliotherapeutic resources, might prove even more beneficial than obtaining a state of absorption during reading.
