Abstract: Nowadays translators have countless resources to assist them in their task. Knowing how to use these resources is part of the instrumental sub-competence (HURTADO ALBIR, 2005, 2015a, 2015b; PACTE, 2009). Undoubtedly, it is necessary to have translation competence to surf amid a barrage of material, much of which is made available in electronic format. But if, on the one hand, translators need to know how to use the resources offered to them, on the other, it is necessary to develop material that is practical, effective and reliable. The lack of reference material to deal with the translation of medical abbreviations was the basis for the creation of a (Portuguese/ English) bilingual glossary of abbreviations in the field of rheumatology. Although these shortened forms are recurrent in the medical text, they continue to challenge translators. This article describes some of the phases of the creation of this glossary and discusses the relationship between the preparation of reference material and the instrumental sub-competence. Keywords: instrumental sub-competence; medical translation; abbreviation; bilingual glossary.
The pain is a multidimensional and subjective experience, so we reflect on the importance of communicating it in a medical consultation, in multicultural immigration contexts. Therefore, it becomes ...necessary the development of language tools that enable narrate the subjective experience of pain and evaluate it.Considering this demand, we propose a glossary with the Portuguese-Spanish pair for the purpose of offering a tool that helps doctors, immigrants and refugees when they need to communicate and interpret the symptoms of pain.
A bilingual Greek–Latin glossary in the papyrus Chester Beatty AC 1499 (= New Testament P99, Vetus Latina AN glo Paul) contains numerous short extracts from the letters of Paul. New photographs and ...re-examination of the original have allowed substantial corrections to previous editions of the text, causing some rare or unique variant readings to disappear and others to appear for the first time. The history of the glossary can now be better understood: it was probably created not directly from a text of Paul, but from an early Christian work, now lost, that quoted extensively from Paul.
In accordance with the theoretical and methodological background of Corpus Linguistic and Phraseology, this study aims to discuss the pedagogical contributions of a bilingual glossary of ...collocations in the field of medicine, which was compiled from a parallel corpus made up of English and Portuguese subtitles extracted from the TV show House M.D. Based on the glossary, we developed some activities that can be used in the classroom, considering that these phraseological units play an important role in the enrichment of EFL learner’s lexical competence. Moreover, we propose the development of other corpus-based collocational activities.

Abstract
I argue that Priapus offers a bilingual gloss on the name ‘Tisiphone’ in Horace,
Satires
1.8. I trace the folk etymology of the Fury’s name and identify various passages in which Latin ...authors emphasize a perceived connection between Tisiphone and
φωνή
, voice. I then demonstrate how this bilingual pun casts Priapus as a narrator capable of learned, Alexandrian wordplay.
The article is an analysis of the Huaxue cailiao Zhong-Xi mingmu biao 化學材料中西名目表 or Vocahdary of names of Chemical Substances, a glossary of technical and scientific ter edited by the English ...translator John Fryer (Fu Lanya 傅蘭雅, 1839-1928) in cooperation with his Chinese colleagues, particularly Xu Shou 徐野 (1818-1884). In the first two chapters of the article, the author traces the origin of the glossary, its principles and the translation choices adopted in the text, briefly highlighting the theoretical background of Fryer's work. In the third chapter, the translation methods adopted by Fryer for the renderings of technical terms are divided into four categories, and a statistical sample of each is provided. In the fourth chapter, the author briefly highlights some issues connected to the translation of chemical terminology and the complex interactions between contemporary chemical theory and chemical terminology. Finally, in the last chapter, examples of neologisms attested for the first time in the HXCL are provided, indicating their diffusion in works published after the glossary. The purpose of the article is to show that the HXCL can be considered an innovative and important step in the evolution of Fryer's translation theories. Despite being incomplete, from both a methodological and lexicological point of view, the text exercised a strong influence on technical and scientific textual production in late Qing China, as well as the relevant nomenclature in Chinese. The article contributes to the research on the HXCL and, more generally, on technical and scientific bilingual glossaries in late Qing China, casting a new light on John Fryer, his Chinese colleagues and their translations of technical and scientific texts for the Jiangnan Arsenal.
John Fryer was one of the most important foreign translators in China after the Opium Wars. The work that is the final result of his experience at the Jiangnan Arsenal is The Translator's Vade-mecum. ...Among the preparatory manuscripts of the glossaries that were published in the Vade-mecum, the author has identified the "Vocabulary of Terms in Naval Architecture." The purpose of this article is to examine the main features of the Vocabulary, its sources and the peculiarities of the manuscript. In the first and second sections, the Vade-mecum is concisely analysed; providing numerous references and simultaneously sketching an outlook of the production and circulation of knowledge in the period considered, the author presents theoretical discussions concerning the norms of translation applied in the Vade-mecum, its purpose and the patronage of the translation activity. In the third and main section, studying the historical significance and linguistic quality of some of the translated terms annotated in the "Vocabulary," the author compares its terminology with the concurrent Japanese one and with other Chinese relevant nomenclatures, demonstrating the complicate interaction in the "Vocabulary" between lexical innovation and recovery of existing terms.
