Throughout 2015 and 2017 Prototy_ome has taken place in Hangar. An inter(in)disciplinary project with a collaborative format based on the bio(info)technology Do it yourself DIY and Do it together ...DIT. In collaboration with Pechblenda Lab, the Biomedical Research Park of Barcelona, DIYBioBcn, Faboratory and subsidized by the Nina Caruso Foundation, Protoyp_ome has brought together artists, scientists, (bio)hackers, makers, theorists and different social groups to revisit, re-think, co-design and develop biological exploration processes, tools and technologies, especially those related to biomedicine. From the premise of the collaboration, Prototyp_ome has brought together a hybrid team, covering different skills and knowledge around their laboratories, as well as the communities that are generated in these common spaces. The inter(in)disciplinariness as a condition of possibility of the collaborative production of knowledge (s) has opened a crack from which to take as a starting point the perspective of the user, putting this to the historical articulation, in terms of hierarchy, of the institutions and disciplines recognized as the only generators of valid knowledge. In this shared process, artistic research has not only played a fundamental role but has made possible a work where experimentation has displaced quantitative parameters, configuring forms of contact-experience from which to re-think the relationships that mediate bodies, working from the co-implicación of matter and form, generating processes of cross-sectional constitution that open the possibility of articulating, other links and other ways of operating.
Polilaktidna kiselina (PLA) i bakterijska nanoceluloza (BNC) zbog svoje biorazgradljivosti, biokompatibilnosti i netoksičnosti imaju velik potencijal za primjenu u biomedicini. Cilj ovog rada bio je ...pripraviti i ispitati biokompozit PLA/BNC. Istražen je utjecaj BNC-a na morfološku strukturu, kemijski sastav, toplinska svojstva, toplinsku postojanost i hidrofobnost PLA te zasijavanje i rast stanica biokompozita PLA/BNC primjenom pretražnog elektronskog mikroskopa (SEM), infracrvene spektroskopije (FTIR), diferencijalne pretražne kalorimetrije (DSC) i termogravimetrijske analize (TGA) te određivanjem kontaktnog kuta i metodom MTT. Dodatkom BNC-a u PLA dolazi do pomaka staklišta (Tg) prema nižim temperaturama, što ukazuje na veću pokretljivost amorfne faze PLA te porasta stupnja kristalnosti zbog nukleacijskog učinka celuloze. Početak toplinske razgradnje pomaknut je na niže temperature u odnosu na čisti PLA, što ukazuje na smanjenje toplinske postojanosti PLA dodatkom BNC-a. Biokompozit PLA/BNC pokazuje poroznu, vlaknastu strukturu. Test zasijavanja stanica pokazao je da je biokompozit PLA/BNC pogodan za prihvaćanje i rast humanih stanica, pa je prema tome potencijalno primjenjiv u regenerativnoj medicini i tkivnom inženjerstvu.

La correcta organización y representación del conocimiento biomédico resulta imprescindible para comprender los diferentes conceptos de este amplio dominio y emplear una terminología precisa para ...denominarlos. En la actualidad, la aplicación en el ámbito de la terminología de las nuevas modalidades de representación conceptual, especialmente las ontologías, facilita el diseño de sistemas conceptuales dinámicos y multidimensionales independientes de la lengua. De este modo, se crean estructuras conceptuales complejas en las que se plasman no solo los diferentes conceptos sino también las relaciones existentes entre ellos, y a las que es posible vincular la terminología empleada para denominar cada uno de estos conceptos en una o varias lenguas.En este artículo se revisan los principales sistemas de representación del conocimiento biomédico de utilidad para el ejercicio de la traducción, tanto por la información conceptual como terminológica que aportan. Por un lado, se presentan aquellos sistemas que, si bien cuentan con una estructura conceptual, esta no está formalizada mediante una ontología; por otro, se analizan los sistemas de naturaleza ontológica.
α-Tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) is widely used as a reactant in calcium phosphate cements. This work aims at doping α-TCP with silicon with a twofold objective. On the one hand, to study the effect of ...Si addition on the stability and reactivity of this polymorph. On the other, to develop Si-doped cements and to evaluate the effect of Si on their in vitro cell response. For this purpose a calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite was sintered at 1250°C with different amounts of silicon oxide. The high temperature polymorph α-TCP was stabilized by the presence of silicon, which inhibited reversion of the β→α transformation, whereas in the Si-free sample α-TCP completely reverted to the β-polymorph. However, the β–α transformation temperature was not affected by the presence of Si. Si–α-TCP and its Si-free counterpart were used as reactants for a calcium phosphate cement. While Si–α-TCP showed faster hydrolysis to calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite, upon complete reaction the crystalline phases, morphology and mechanical properties of both cements were similar. An in vitro cell culture study, in which osteoblast-like cells were exposed to the ions released by both materials, showed a delay in cell proliferation in both cases and stimulation of cell differentiation, more marked for the Si-containing cement. These results can be attributed to strong modification of the ionic concentrations in the culture medium by both materials. Ca-depletion from the medium was observed for both cements, whereas continuous Si release was detected for the Si-containing cement.

Los pacientes afectados por esta condición se caracterizan por ...concentraciones bajas de cortisol y deficiencia de aldosterona con hiponatremia e hiperpotasemia concomitantes.La etiología más común es el desarrollo de anticuerpos contra la enzima 21 hidroxilasa.Otra causa importante de la insuficiencia suprarrenal primaria son las enfermedades infecciosas, en especial en los países de bajos ingresos. Entre las causas infecciosas que se han descrito se encuentran: Mycobacterium tuberculosis, el complejo de Mycobacterium avium, Neisseria meningitidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Haemophilus influenzae, citomegalovirus, Pneumocystis jirovecii, Histoplasma capsulatum, Blastomyces dermatiditis, Cryptococcus neoformans, Cocciodiodes immitis, Nocardia spp. y Paracoccidioides brasiliensis.En este artículo se presenta la imagen de la tomografía de un paciente que presentó falla suprarrenal, con masas en las glándulas suprarrenales, cuya biopsia permitió establecer el diagnóstico final de paracoccidioidomicosis.
Brain inflammaging is increasingly considered as contributing to age-related cognitive loss and neurodegeneration. Despite intensive research in multiple models, no clinically effective ...pharmacological treatment has been found yet. Here, in the mouse model of brain senescence SAMP8, we tested the effects of proinsulin, a promising neuroprotective agent that was previously proven to be effective in mouse models of retinal neurodegeneration. Proinsulin is the precursor of the hormone insulin but also upholds developmental physiological effects, particularly as a survival factor for neural cells. Adeno-associated viral vectors of serotype 1 bearing the human proinsulin gene were administered intramuscularly to obtain a sustained release of proinsulin into the blood stream, which was able to reach the target area of the hippocampus. SAMP8 mice and the control strain SAMR1 were treated at 1 month of age. At 6 months, behavioral testing exhibited cognitive loss in SAMP8 mice treated with the null vector. Remarkably, the cognitive performance achieved in spatial and recognition tasks by SAMP8 mice treated with proinsulin was similar to that of SAMR1 mice. In the hippocampus, proinsulin induced the activation of neuroprotective pathways and the downstream signaling cascade, leading to the decrease of neuroinflammatory markers. Furthermore, the decrease of astrocyte reactivity was a central effect, as demonstrated in the connectome network of changes induced by proinsulin. Therefore, the neuroprotective effects of human proinsulin unveil a new pharmacological potential therapy in the fight against cognitive loss in the elderly.

Measuring the impedance frequency response of systems by means of frequency sweep electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) takes time. An alternative based on broadband signals enables the user to ...acquire simultaneous impedance response data collection. This is directly reflected in a short measuring time compared to the frequency sweep approach. As a result of this increase in the measuring speed, the accuracy of the impedance spectrum is compromised. The aim of this paper is to study how the choice of the broadband signal can contribute to mitigate this accuracy loss. A review of the major advantages and pitfalls of four different periodic broadband excitations suitable to be used in EIS applications is presented. Their influence on the instrumentation and impedance spectrum accuracy is analyzed. Additionally, the signal processing tools to objectively evaluate the quality of the impedance spectrum are described. In view of the experimental results reported, the impedance spectrum signal-to-noise ratio (SNRZ) obtained with multisine or discrete interval binary sequence signals is about 20-30 dB more accurate than maximum length binary sequence or chirp signals.
Objective: To characterize the risk factors for breast cancer in patients seen in a referral center in the city of Teresina, Piaui (2010-2012). Methods: A descriptive exploratory study with 197 ...patient records. A personal health questionnaire was administered to 20 patients and 20 women without breast cancer. The data were submitted to SPSS 13.0 for analysis of percentages, means and Spearman correlations. Results: The average age (55 years) was positively correlated with ductal carcinoma (83%) and 10% of metastases. The occupation of domestic, family history, medications, and exposure to ionizing radiation have been demonstrated as risk factors. Significant (p <0.001) positive correlation (r = 0.6642, p = 0.002) were observed between breast cancer family history and occupation. Conclusion: Prevention strategies related to environmental, occupational and hereditary factors are necessary to minimize the risk of mutagenicity and carcinogenicity. El Convenio de Oviedo, habiendo supuesto un avance esencial en el derecho internacional de consenso en materia de derechos humanos y biomedicina, veintitrés años después necesita adecuarse a los ...nuevos avances científicos respecto a las técnicas de intervención de la línea germinal humana. Aceptando que éstas forman parte ya del contexto social, científico y jurídico de nuestra época, y que alguna de ellas necesita aún un intenso debate sobre su aplicación, como las técnicas de edición del genoma, analizamos en el presente trabajo cuales son las modificaciones que consideramos oportunas para que la norma incluya esta realidad y ofrezca mayor seguridad jurídica respecto a estas técnicas.

las terapias hormonales de reemplazo como las cirugías de reasignación de sexo traen aparejados cambios en la identidad legal de las personas e introducen el problema médico-psiquiátrico del “cambio de sexo” en el campo legal.
