While several biomimicry-related keywords exist, scholars and practitioners in architecture have given varying interpretations to the term biomimicry depending on the use and goal. There has been increasing interest in biomimicry in architecture (BIA), yet the field has become more fragmented. This study aims to highlight differences and similarities through an extended literature survey and analysis that explores case studies, classification systems, and methodological frameworks related to biomimicry in architecture as a way to contribute to reduce the fragmentation in the field. To provide the necessary context and avoid confusion regarding the many concepts and terms that refer to nature-based design, biomimicry-related keywords and interpretations of the word biomimicry are first clarified. Ultimately, the discussion is an integrative effort at defining the field, and highlights the significance and impact of employing BIA in terms of sustainability and usability, as well as showcasing the opportunities for further research.

Exosomes have emerged as appealing candidate therapeutic agents and delivery nanoplatforms due to their endogenous features and unique biological properties. However, obstacles such as low isolation ...yield, considerable complexity and potential safety concerns, and inefficient drug payload substantially hamper their therapeutic applicability. To this end, developing bioinspired exosome-like nanoparticles has become a promising area to overcome certain limitations of their natural counterparts. Synthetically fabrication of exosome-like nanoparticles that harbor only crucial components of exosomes through controllable protocols strongly increases the pharmaceutical acceptability of these vesicles. Assembly of exosome-like nanovesicles derived from producer cells allows for a promising strategy for scale-up production. To improve the loading capability and delivery efficiency of exosomes, hybrid exosome-like nanovesicles and membrane-camouflaged nanoparticles towards better bridging synthetic nanocarriers with natural exosomes could be designed. Building off these observations, herein, efforts are made to give an overview of bioinspired exosome-like therapeutics and delivery nanoplatforms. We briefly recapitulate the recent advance in exosome biology with focus on tailoring exosomes as therapeutics and delivery vehicles. Furthermore, we elaborately discuss the biomimicry methodologies for preparation of exosome-like nanoparticles with special emphasis on offering insights into strategies for rational design of exosome-like biomaterials as effective and safe therapeutics and delivery nanoplatforms.

The exoskeleton structure of mantis shrimp’s dactyl clubs presents an extraordinary helicoidal reinforcement pattern, holding immense potential for revolutionizing fiber-reinforced composite ...materials. While extensive investigations have shed light on its unique advantages, the inherent nature of curved Bouligand structures remains incompletely comprehended. To elucidate these unexplored characteristics, the present study introduces a novel analytical model to efficiently calculate the interlaminar shear and normal stresses in helicoidal laminated curved beams under transverse loading. The analytical model systematically determines the optimal uniform fiber interply (pitch) angle for these bio-inspired structures with an arbitrary number of layers. The computational analysis revealed that achieving minimum interlaminar stresses always requires the precise orientation of π or 2π helicoids along the laminate thickness when the number of layers exceeds two. This theoretical discovery is remarkably identical to the study of stacked chitin fibrils in arthropod clubs reported in the literature. For a 37-ply composite, the flat and shallow-curved beam configurations primarily resulted in a 5° optimal pitch angle, while the deep-curved configuration yielded a 10° optimal angle. To validate the model, three-point bending testing were performed. Four fiber pitch angles were thoroughly examined, including the optimal and quad angles. The digital image correlation (DIC) technique was employed to analyze the structural responses and detect the onset of delamination. The numerical and experimental results demonstrated good consistency, exhibiting significant enhancement in the delamination resistance of up to 30 percent with the optimal angle.
