Calculative Thinking and Nihilism. The Case of Language and Homeland - The paper shows the link between nihilism and calculative thinking in Heidegger’s philosophy. Nihilism is considered in ...accordance with the definition as the “denial of the dispossession of Being,” which opposes its conception as absence of beings: it is, thus, not the expression of absence, but a manifestation of the excess of beings. Calculative thinking is addressed in the context of the reflection about technology and disposal over “that which is” (Gestell) that coincides with the contemporary nihilistic emphasis regarding beings: nihilism of the technological times as the unifying exigency of everything as reserve. This exigency is extrapolated onto the consideration of language as merely a means of communication and of the own (das Eigene) as experience in decline. The author argues that empty identity as the essence of current nihilism could be overcome with the emphasis on the characteristic difference of mother language and of homeland: the intention, therefore, is to highlight the preeminence of the same (das Selbe) over the identical (das Gleiche) in the process of an overcoming of the contemporary nihilism.
The Crisis of Dwelling. The Ethos of the West The paper attempts to describe the fundamental features of the cultural ethos of the contemporary world, which within humanity causes the crisis of ...dwelling. Referring to the Heideggerian diagnostic of Weltzivilisation—as characterized by the prevalence of calculative thinking and thus by the demand of the availability of all entities—, we underline the features of thoughtlessness and emptiness of the technical civilization tied predominantly to calculation. Upon the basis of these features, one can conclude that the ethos of the current world has a banal and nihilistic character, which is linked, in a very general way, to the comprehension structure of today’s man that constitutes the way of the latter’s opening to the world and understanding of the disclosure itself. The prepositions of such a deliberation allow us to recognize that the crisis of dwelling resides, ultimately, in the crisis of thinking already indicated by Heidegger.
ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to bring the meaning of Heidegger’s calculative thinking and Beck’s risk society theory closer, as well as their interpellations with the meaning of technique in modernity. Nevertheless, more than dealing with the convergences between both thinkers, this study also intends to demonstrate the importance of Heidegger’s technique philosophy in order to investigate the meaning of risk calculation and of calculation risk in risk society. Therefore, it argues that Beck’s risk theory confirms and updates Heidegger’s thinking on modern technique, as one observes that calculative thinking, which directs and controls the way of being in the age of technicality, clearly manifests itself nowadays, in the global risk society.
The illustration of the fundamental, pre-scientific, presuppositions of natural scientific approaches to psychology, psychiatry and the related areas of research has been one of the most significant ...achievements of Heidegger's collaboration with the Swiss psychiatrist, Medard Boss. The central issue in this regard is the limitations of research based on the natural scientific orientation in understanding human experience. In this paper, different aspects of the Daseinsanalytic critique of this orientation would be discussed with reference to the four basic problems: the problem of natural scientific calculation, the problem of reality, the problem of human perception, and the problem of the conflation between the motive and the cause of human behavior. While thoughtlessness about these problems may result in scientific absolutism, questioning can free researchers from theoretical dogmas and the problematic ideas especially the idea of the full separation of psychology, as an exact science, similar to the natural modern science, from philosophy.

With the unprecedented speed of diffusion, and with the unimagined persistence in disturbingly challenging human interaction from minute to mega level, the Covid -19 has now become a major ...preoccupation for experts as well as the lay people everywhere. Coronavirus has not only jeopardized human’s health, but has even more effectively disrupted human lifeworld in a limitless fashion. Simultaneously, it is also a fact that the time interval between pandemics is shortening and the density and destructive power of each new one is increasing. This means that humanity is not threatened only by a particular virus, but it is experiencing the situation of a devastating trend of intensifying pandemics. Obviously, there have been increasing attempts, scientifically and otherwise, to find answers regarding pandemics in general and for Coronavirus in particular. There is also a consensus that Coronavirus comes from wildlife and its threat for humanity is persistent. But it seems that questions about possible ways and approaches to prevent or to resolve the riddle of pandemics requires something more than what paradigmatically dispersed and discursively confined “knowledge” of present Age can provide. This article is an attempt to encounter this phenomenon from an interdisciplinary standpoint. It is claimed here that all questions, fears, and anxieties regarding “Corona” can be answered if it is recognized that the contemporary Life/World has already been a world - in crisis due to the requirements of technicization the results of which are now fully manifested in apparently intrusive, but world- imbedded - deadly virus.

Thinking is one of those themes through of which Later Heidegger investigates about relationship of man with the Truth of Being. Truth of Being is the fundamental event under the historical destines ...sent by it the uncovering and hiddenness have their essential sway accomplished and man has an understanding of truth. According to Later Heidegger, we live in the age of need and forgetfulness of being and due to the domination of Will to Power we are deprived from an authentic thinking and also an original relationship with the world. Of course, thoughtlessness or lack of thinking is itself a destiny of Truth of Being and our negligence of this issue leads to the exacerbation of this need. In the current essay we study the meaning of original thinking which is referred to by Heidegger as meditative thinking within the context of his discussion of the hidden essence of being. We will show that Heidegger's debate of thinking has a well-established relevance to the core issue of his philosophy, i.e. problem of the Truth of Being. Moreover, it will be shown that the stance of such critics as Joseph C. Pitt concerning Heidegger's notion of technology as a passive understanding of technology is untenable because it does not ground itself on the originary concept of man as the Da of Seyn. Rather Pitt's notion of technology is founded on the understanding of calculative thinking that insists on Cartesian Subject that exacerbates the Seinsvergessenheit
Shinran is widely recognized as one of the most original and seminal figures in the Japanese intellectual tradition. His importance in the Buddhist tradition turns on his insight into the ...recalcitrance of self-attachment even in religious discipline and on his self-reflective exploration of unenlightened, conditioned existence in vigorous engagement with the Buddhist path. These enable him to trace, from an existential perspective, the nonduality of the karmically created and the uncreated that is taught to characterize wisdom or reality in Mahayana tradition. The pivotal themes of his thought—self-will or “self-power” (jiriki), “calculative thinking” (hakarai), the linguisticality of human existence, “provisional” and “true” hermeneutical modes of Buddhist engagement, temporality, “naturalness” or the self-giving of reality (jinen), and “the attainment of awakening by the person who is evil” (akunin jōbutsu)—resonate with several concerns of recent Western thought.

Book Chapter
Whereas the previous chapter examined the ethical implications of indifference as the condition of thinking, this chapter’s aim is to provide an exposé and a tentative analysis of this problematic ...condition of thinkingin itsabsurdity.
As any analysis of thought will show—whether philosophical, theological, or political—thinking can be callous, thinking can be vicious, while being nevertheless proficient, diligent, and even purely theoretical or contemplative. That is to say, it is easy to point the finger at the kind of thinking that falls short, that disappoints, or that turns against this world, because thinking inevitably does all these
