This essay relies on the historical figure of the camera obscura, as the site or place of articulation between the visible and the invisible. With the help of iconographic documents, it shows that it ...is not merely a process of inversion that defines the camera obscura. Indeed, a crucial spatial component is at play in the medium of the room itself: the camera is the very milieu where both an inversion and a displacement take place. From this perspective, it will appear more clearly that visibility does not stand beside or float above the invisible, but “takes place” right at its heart.

This short paper examines my relationship as an artist with the format of my photographic images and the decisions I make about the edges of my prints. It is presented in conjunction with and as ...additional to images of my photographic work. The format of my work is an integral part of my practice and it is informed by precedents from the history of both painting and photography. As a result, I have been thinking about how and why the photographic edge plays such a huge role in the conception,...
A deeper understanding of the temporal behaviour of capillaries enables the improvement of modern beam welding processes, e.g. the application of the multi-bath or multi-process technique in electron ...beam welding. The temporal capillary behaviour in an Electron Beam (EB) multi-bath welding process can be analysed at different beam deflection frequencies by means of secondary X-ray. This is visualised by X-rays which are generated during beam-material interaction in the capillary and can be visualised as an upside-down image on a scintillator screen via a pinhole camera. The analysis of the high-speed images allows conclusions regarding the inertia of a temporarily unheated EB capillary. This paper shows that with increasing deflection rate the collapse of capillary decreases while at a deflection rate of 1000 Hz no collapse in capillary depth can be detected.
•A basic visualisation of the capillary behaviour by X-ray self-illumination is possible.•Recording rates of up to 10 kHz can be achieve with the presented set-up.•Using automated image recognition, the capillary depth can be measured in each individual image of the high-speed recordings.•It is found that a temporarily heated capillary partially collapses in the non-heated phases.•With increasing deflection frequency the capillary collapse is reduced up to the point of 1000 Hz.•The inertia of the capillary can be determined to 1 ms under the given conditions.
In 1971, Rockne Krebs presented an immersive artwork composed of the optical phenomenon of the camera obscura, among other elements. Although this artist appears to be the first interested in this ...phenomenon, it was only from the 1990s onwards that the artistic practice of camera obscura as room installation became widespread. In the decades since, several authors have included it in their production—developing projects of a photographic nature through different approaches, mainly focusing on projected image or spectator participation. Through the method of media archaeology, it is possible to find three lines of contemporary artistic research on the phenomenon: camera obscura related to meta-photography in Abelardo Morell’s works; immersive installation pieces as proposed by Zoe Leonard; and projections of other worlds in the work of the artistic duo João Maria Gusmão and Pedro Paiva. This paper aims at a comparative study that intends to analyze these three paths, underlining the characteristics of some contemporary artworks and contextualizing their elements to the history and use of camera obscura in the photographic context.

There is a path stretching over two thousand years, from the awareness of shadows projected onto the back of a cave through to cinematic images. They are "real images", those that concentrate light ...energy and can be captured on a screen. We will examine just one fragment of this long story, which takes place in the Mediterranean and the Far East, from the birth of Western thought in Greece to the assimilation of Hellenistic culture into Arab culture. Finally, we will come to their spread through Europe in the medieval and early modern age. With Leonardo da Vinci's description of the camera obscura, the world of optics would become explicitly bound up with that of the emotions, paving the way for an unstoppable process in which images would first be fixed through photography and then freed in movement.
“Relating” meaning both recounting and connecting, it is a suitable term to describe war literature which is, at the same time, aesthetic and testimonial. Scottish poets were sent to the African ...front during the Second World War and their poems, letters or diaries reflect their experience in Egypt, Libya and Tunisia, offering sharp contrasts with what is commonly believed or imagined of desert landscapes and the Desert War. The aim of this article is to examine how Scottish war poems may be inscribed in an artistic as well as a historical counter-discourse. The first part is a historical and cultural survey which contextualizes life and literary relationship in Cairo at the time, while evoking the main literary landmarks poets might have called up as they faced desert landscapes. The second part analyzes how they related to or broke away from these landmarks to relate their desert experience, with particular focus being set on the poem as a silent camera obscura. The last part turns to human landscapes and examines relationship within the 8th Army and the strong affinities Scottish poets felt towards German simple soldiers or North African civilians.
Technology has predisposed us to various opinions on the current state of affairs. This article aims to investigate the historical approach and the development of aerial photography, namely a ...comparative study using drone (UAV) as a device vs 16th-century city and landscape mapping. This article also intends to explore how aerial photography with a drone (UAV) technology may provide a better understanding of how to improve the development of the metropolitan landscape. This study indicates that one can use a drone device to instantly visualise and better understand the cityscape from different dimensions and perspectives. The drone potentially previews and captures the live visuals, offering another representation of scale and reality that is impossible in the traditional city and landscape painting (mono composition). This study would employ an empirical method of observation and measurement of phenomena using verifiable evidence that the researchers experienced before reaching concrete outcomes. At the same time, this paper reviews the usage of the drone as a visualisation and representation tool to better construct an alternative reality (possibilities of different views). As a result, the most appealing aspect of utilising a drone (UAV) device for photography is the ability to shoot from a higher viewpoint. Most drones, particularly those meant for more advanced users, include built-in cameras that can spin and swivel to allow the operator to take photographs and videos from various angles. As a result, drone usage improves visual and cultural background documentation to provide alternate answers that would otherwise be incomprehensible.
