The utilization of the Career Construction Interview (CCI) is advancing throughout the career counseling field. The narrative social constructivist approach assists clients in accentuating and ...narrating a personal career story that highlights attitudes, skills, and behaviors for their career planning and development. The CCI is recommended for use across diverse cultures and groups. However, more insight is needed into how career counselors can use the CCI to implement a trauma‐informed approach and reduce the risk of re‐traumatization. This article presents an review of trauma in career counseling, the CCI, and trauma‐specific considerations for diverse populations that present for career counseling. Next, the authors present questions from the CCI and how trauma may affect the responses to these questions. Alternative prompts are provided that align with the original purposes of these questions and provide similar storied responses to aid the client in building a useful narrative for career development. Additionally, the authors present a brief case example implementing these alternative prompts and their effectiveness in application.
Uno de los objetivos fundamentales de la orientación profesional es facilitar la integración laboral. Para ello, necesita contar con instrumentos válidos y fiables que evalúen el proceso de búsqueda ...de empleo. Se pretende ampliar y mejorar tres escalas utilizadas por el Servicio de Empleo y Formación de la Región de Murcia (SEF) dirigidas a medir los principales elementos cognitivo-conductuales implicados en el proceso de búsqueda de empleo: sistema facilitador de inserción (SFI), conductas de búsqueda de empleo (ICBE) y expectativas de búsqueda de empleo(ECPBE). Después de estudiar su fiabilidad y validez se eliminan algunos ítems y se añaden nuevos elementos basados en la revisión de la literatura y la opinión de expertos. Las escalas mejoradas se someten a validación mediante análisis factorial confirmatorio de una muestra de 472 personas. Atendiendo a los resultados, las nuevas escalas presentan una fiabilidad adecuada en todos sus elementos con un alfa de Cronbach superior a .7. Muestran una adecuada estructura y ajuste en el modelo de medida robusto Satorra-Bentler χ2 (494) = 972.43 (p= .000), NFI= .9, NNFI= .92, CFI= .93 y RMSEA= .05 con una correcta validez convergente y discriminante. Se concluye que, las escalas mejoradas constituyen una medida válida y fiable de las principales variables implicadas en la búsqueda de empleo y una herramienta útil para la toma de decisiones basadas en la evidencia sobre la idoneidad de las actuaciones de orientación profesional dirigidas a personas desempleadas.
This study used a pretest–posttest control group design to examine the effectiveness of a six-session constructionist career counseling intervention (Savickas, 2011). It was hypothesized that ...relative to pre-intervention scores, the participants would demonstrate decreases in their indecision, anxiety, uncertainty, and insecurity about their career choices. Participants consisted of 50 undergraduates ranging in age from 19 to 25. They completed the Undergraduate Career Choice Survey (UCCS) and then were evenly divided into an intervention group and a control group. The intervention group received six sessions of constructionist career counseling. Each session was approximately 45min with a total of 4h, 30min approximately for the six sessions. Both groups then took the UCCS again. Analyses of the data using t-tests revealed significant reductions in indecision, anxiety, uncertainty, and insecurity for the intervention group but not for the control group. The intervention group took the UCCS again eight weeks later. An ANOVA indicated that the reductions in indecision, anxiety, uncertainty, and insecurity were slightly yet significantly greater. Limitations and directions for further research were pointed out.
•The effect of a constructionist career counseling intervention was examined.•Results showed decreases in indecision, anxiety, uncertainty, and insecurity.•Constructionist model can lead to career stories fit for a 21st century workplace.
Understanding the complex process of career development of young people with refugee backgrounds, who resettle in developed countries after experiencing prolonged migration journeys, is a ...contemporary priority at a time when the highest number of people in recorded history is in urgent need of resettlement. Moving towards anticipated futures and access to appropriate work could be challenging for these young people after resettlement, considering the effects of protracted displacement that might have silenced their agency. To propose new ways of assisting young people with refugee backgrounds with such challenges, further research that increases knowledge about their career development is needed. The current research aimed to enhance understandings of the career development of young people with refugee backgrounds through culturally and contextually sensitive exploration of their career stories. Using a qualitative exploratory multiple case study method informed by narrative inquiry, qualitative data were generated through interviews and analyzed using a voice-centred relational method. Each participant's unique career story reflected the operation of various voices, relationships, social structures and dominant narratives, influential in reshaping their future career plans. Findings revealed that narrative inquiry fostered rich storytelling for young people with refugee backgrounds. These findings suggest that narrative career counseling could assist them to re-contextualize their skills, strengths, knowledge and career plans after resettlement. Through such re-contextualization, voices that might have been lost or diminished during multiple transitions have space to re-emerge. This process may be a first step towards gaining a sense of agency that is needed for the actualization of preferred career plans.

Professional immigrants make up a large portion of immigration to Canada, and many of these individuals pursue retraining in higher education for career transition. This article examines the career ...challenges faced by immigrant students and looks at their career needs through the lens of Lent, Brown and Hackett's social cognitive career theory and Krumboltz's social learning theory. These frameworks highlight the dynamic interactions between the individual and their environment, making them especially suited to addressing the unique needs of immigrant students. This article also discusses theory-backed interventions that can be adopted by career counsellors when dealing with immigrant students.
This study assessed the processes and outcomes of individual career counselling for 111 university students in Québec (Canada) who received an average of 3.19 sessions. We identified two profiles of ...clients at the beginning of counselling: (a) Clients with moderate levels of career indecision and distress, and (b) clients with high levels of indecision and distress. Clients in the Undecided/Distressed profile evaluated the working alliance lower than did clients in the other profile. Both profiles did not differ in the magnitude of pretest to posttest change on career indecision and psychological distress. Clients in the Undecided/Distressed profile expressed more indecision and distress at posttest than did clients in the other profile. Working alliance mediated the relationship between profile membership and outcomes at posttest.

This meta-analysis of career choice intervention is a replication of Brown and Ryan Krane's (2000) notable meta-analysis. This random-effects meta-analysis included 57 published and unpublished ...studies that produced a weighted mean effect size of 0.352. Seven separate meta-analyses were conducted for the outcomes of vocational identity, career maturity, career decidedness, career decision-making self-efficacy, perceived environmental support, perceived career barriers, and outcome expectations. Studies (k=32) that utilized measures of career decision-making self-efficacy had the largest effect sizes with an average of 0.452. This effect size was homogeneous, but tentative moderator analyses were conducted. Counselor support appears to be a critical ingredient in career choice counseling. Implications and directions for future research are discussed.
