Career construction theory is a grand theory of career development. The goal of this special issue on empirical developments in career construction theory was to showcase research that addresses ...major unanswered questions regarding this theory, including the role of context and development over time, as well as the applicability of the theory in specific samples. Furthermore, we sought advanced research that addresses the dimensionality, processes, and outcomes of career construction by adopting diverse approaches, including quantitative, qualitative, and intervention methods. In this editorial, we briefly describe key propositions of career construction theory and emphasize major questions that remain to be answered within this theoretical framework. We then briefly summarize the eight empirical studies included in the special issue and explain how they, individually and collectively, contribute to the advancement of research on career construction.

At the beginning of the 21st century, a new social arrangement of work poses a series of questions and challenges to scholars who aim to help people develop their working lives. Given the ...globalization of career counseling, we decided to address these issues and then to formulate potentially innovative responses in an international forum. We used this approach to avoid the difficulties of creating models and methods in one country and then trying to export them to other countries where they would be adapted for use. This article presents the initial outcome of this collaboration, a counseling model and methods. The life-designing model for career intervention endorses five presuppositions about people and their work lives: contextual possibilities, dynamic processes, non-linear progression, multiple perspectives, and personal patterns. Thinking from these five presuppositions, we have crafted a contextualized model based on the epistemology of social constructionism, particularly recognizing that an individual’s knowledge and identity are the product of social interaction and that meaning is co-constructed through discourse. Greater attention than ever is being placed on how universities enable their graduates to achieve their career goals as a key return on significant private and public investment. Scholars in two ...distinct fields of research have explored the characteristics and conditions that promote or constrain graduates' career success: graduate employability and career development. In this article, we present visualisations of direct citation networks among 4068 journal articles focused on graduate employability and career development and consider the disciplinary landscapes that they reveal. Our findings show that despite a clear alignment of research concerns and educational goals, there has been limited theoretical or practical exchange between the two fields. We argue that purposeful exchange between the two fields will enrich both and, when applied to practice, could inform an evidence-based, integrative pedagogy of careers and employability learning in higher education.

This study focuses on the undergraduate self-perception of employability. We aimed to explore the impact of human capital, which incorporates social capital, cultural capital, psychological capital, ...scholastic capital, market-value capital, and skills. We also examined the role of careers advice and career ownership (protean career). Additionally, moderators of gender, degree subject, and year of study offer further contribution. Running a two-wave study (Model I) and a cross-sectional study (Model II) of undergraduates at a UK university, our findings draw on 387 students. Findings indicate that human capital, careers advice, and career ownership are important components of self-perceived employability. The study advances human capital theory and contemporary career theory at the transition from higher education into the labour market. Through advancing understanding of the undergraduate self-perception of employability, all stakeholders may benefit, via better-informed strategies for preparing, attracting, hiring, and retaining graduates.
