Dong, Ann D'Orazio, Kevin C. Dunn, Alexander Dunst, Jared Gardner,
Edward C. ...Holland, Isabel Macdonald, Brigid Maher, Ben Owen,
Rebecca Scherr, Maureen Shay, Marc Singer, Richard Todd Stafford,
and Øyvind Vågnes The Comics of Joe Sacco addresses the
range of his award-winning work, from his early comics stories as
well as his groundbreaking journalism Palestine (1993) and
Safe Area to Goražde (2000), to Footnotes in Gaza
(2009) and his most recent book The Great War (2013), a
graphic history of World War I. First in the series, Critical
Approaches to Comics Artists, this edited volume explores Sacco's
comics journalism and features established and emerging scholars
from comics studies, cultural studies, geography, literary studies,
political science, and communication studies. Sacco's work has
already found a place in some of the foundational scholarship in
comics studies, and this book solidifies his role as one of the
most important comics artists today. Sections focus on how Sacco's
comics journalism critiques and employs the standard of objectivity
in mainstream reporting, what aesthetic principles and approaches
to lived experience can be found in his comics, how Sacco employs
the space of the comics page to map history and war, and the ways
that his comics function in the classroom and as human rights
activism. The Comics of Joe Sacco offers definitive,
exciting approaches to some of the most important--and
necessary--comics today, by one of the most acclaimed
journalist-artists of our time.
Eclectic British author Alan Moore (b. 1953) is one of the most acclaimed and controversial comics writers to emerge since the late 1970s. He has produced a large number of well-regarded comic books ...and graphic novels while also making occasional forays into music, poetry, performance, and prose.
InAlan Moore: Comics as Performance, Fiction as Scalpel, Annalisa Di Liddo argues that Moore employs the comics form to dissect the literary canon, the tradition of comics, contemporary society, and our understanding of history. The book considers Moore's narrative strategies and pinpoints the main thematic threads in his works: the subversion of genre and pulp fiction, the interrogation of superhero tropes, the manipulation of space and time, the uses of magic and mythology, the instability of gender and ethnic identity, and the accumulation of imagery to create satire that comments on politics and art history.
Examining Moore's use of comics to scrutinize contemporary culture, Di Liddo analyzes his best-known works--Swamp Thing, V for Vendetta, Watchmen, From Hell, Promethea, andLost Girls. The study also highlights Moore's lesser-known output, such asHalo Jones, Skizz, andBig Numbers, and his prose novelVoice of the Fire. Alan Moore: Comics as Performance, Fiction as Scalpelreveals Moore to be one of the most significant and distinctly postmodern comics creators of the last quarter-century.
With Essays by Baru, Bart Beaty, Cécile Vernier Danehy, Hugo Frey, Pascal Lefèvre, Fabrice Leroy, Amanda Macdonald, Mark McKinney, Ann Miller, and Clare Tufts
In Belgium, France, Switzerland, and ...other French-speaking countries, many well-known comics artists have focused their attention on historical and political events. In works ranging from comic books and graphic novels to newspaper strips, cartoonists have addressed such controversial topics as French and Belgian collaboration and resistance during World War II, European colonialism and U.S. imperialism, anti-Semitism in France, the integration of African immigrant groups in Europe, and the green and feminist movements.
History and Politics in French-Language Comics and Graphic Novelscollects new essays that address comics from a variety of viewpoints, including a piece from practicing artist Baru. The explorations range from discussion of such canonical works as Hergé'sTintinseries to such contemporary expressions as Baru'sRoad to America(2002), about the Algerian War. Included are close readings of specific comics series and graphic novels, such as Cécile Vernier Danehy's examination of Cosey'sSaigon Hanoi, about remembering the Vietnam War. Other writers use theoretical lenses as a means of critiquing a broad range of comics, such as Bart Beaty's Bourdieu-inspired reading of today's comics field, and Amanda Macdonald's analysis of bandes dessinées (French comic books) in New Caledonia during the 1990s.
The anthology establishes the French-language comics tradition as one rich with representations of history and politics and is one of the first English-language collections to explore the subject.
Mark McKinney is associate professor of French at Miami University, Ohio. With Alec G. Hargreaves, he editedPost-Colonial Cultures in France.

eBook
Latin American comics and graphic novels have a unique history of addressing controversial political, cultural, and social issues. This volume presents new perspectives on how comics on and from ...Latin America both view and express memory formation on major historical events and processes. The contributors, from a variety of disciplines including literary theory, cultural studies, and history, explore topics including national identity construction, narratives of resistance to colonialism and imperialism, the construction of revolutionary traditions, and the legacies of authoritarianism and political violence. The chapters offer a background history of comics and graphic novels in the region, and survey a range of countries and artists such as Joaquín Salvador Lavado (a.k.a Quino), Héctor G. Oesterheld, and Juan Acevedo. They also highlight the unique ability of this art and literary form to succinctly render memory. In sum, this volume offers in-depth analysis of an understudied, yet key literary genre in Latin American memory studies and documents the essential role of comics during the transition from dictatorship to democracy.
Since his first appearance inAction ComicsNumber One, published in late spring of 1938, Superman has represented the essence of American heroism. "Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a ...locomotive, and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound," the Man of Steel has thrilled audiences across the globe, yet as life-long "Superman Guy" Tom De Haven argues in this highly entertaining book, his story is uniquely American.
Created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster in the midst of the Great Depression, Superman is both a transcendent figure and, when posing as his alter-ego, reporter Clark Kent, a humble working-class citizen. An orphan and an immigrant, he shares a personal history with the many Americans who came to this country in search of a better life, and his amazing feats represent the wildest realization of the American dream. As De Haven reveals through behind-the-scenes vignettes, personal anecdotes, and lively interpretations of more than 70 years of comic books, radio programs, TV shows, and Hollywood films, Superman's legacy seems, like the Man of Steel himself, to be utterly invincible.
i Queer women of color have historically been underrepresented or excluded completely in fiction and comics. When present, they are depicted as "less than" the white, Eurocentric norm. Drawing on ...semiotics, queer theory, and gender studies, this book addresses the imbalanced representation of queer women of color in graphic narratives and fiction and explores ways of rewriting queer women of color back into the frame. The author interrogates what it means to be "Other" and how "Othering" can be more creatively resisted.
