In order to facilitate safe and efficient interactions between autonomous vehicles (AVs) and pedestrians, lighting communication functions through extended signal forms such as light patterns and ...pictograms are of particular interest to express AV intentions. Currently, there is no consensus on which signal form should be used for Autonomous Vehicle-to-Pedestrian (AV2P) communications. Considering that the understandability of signal forms is crucial for the effectiveness of AV2P communications and thereby for choosing the appropriate signal form, we conducted a controlled investigation, consisting of designing forty-nine signals in the forms of light patterns and pictograms to express the vehicle yielding intention, and evaluating their performance in terms of understandability through monitor-based tests with more than five hundred online participants. It is found that, with the blank background where no external influence existed, the light patterns performed badly for correctly expressing the vehicle yielding intention but they were able to convey a warning message. The pictograms performed relatively well for expressing the yielding intention, but the diverse types of confusion were observed for those which were not well designed. With the vehicle-pedestrian encounter scenario where the vehicle yielding behaviors were explicit, the light patterns and the pictograms all performed well and the difference between them became less evident. These findings add new insights on the difference of understandability between light patterns and pictograms as available signal forms for AV2P communication functions, and are discussed in terms of usage recommendations in future road systems.

Background
There is a lack of research to determine the efficacy of cervical perivascular sympathectomy (CPVS) in children with cerebral palsy (CP).
Objective
This study aimed to evaluate the ...efficacy of CPVS in children with CP and analyze the associated influential factors.
Methods
Using the method of retrospective cohort studies, children who underwent CPVS were included in the CPVS group, whereas those who underwent selective posterior rhizotomy (SPR) were included in the SPR group. The Communication Function Classification System (CFCS) and Teacher Drooling Scale (TDS) were used to evaluate the communication function and salivation in the two groups before and 12 months after surgery and compare the surgical efficiency between the two groups, and the factors affecting the efficacy were screened by binary logistic regression.
Results
The study included 406 patients, 202 in the CPVS group and 204 in the SPR group. No significant differences were observed in the baseline characteristics (
p
> 0.05). The surgical efficacy of the CPVS group (47.01%) was significantly higher than that in the SPR group (9.81%) (
χ
2
= 71.08,
p
< 0.001). Binary logic regression analysis showed that preterm birth and Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) grade were influencing factors of surgical efficacy. Eighteen patients developed postoperative complications.
Conclusion
CPVS is a safe and effective surgery for cerebral palsy. Preterm birth and GMFCS grade are independent factors affecting the efficacy of surgery.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate how nonprofit service providers can better engage their customers through online communication. It identifies two communication styles and three ...communication functions, and examines their impact on customer commenting, customer liking and customer sharing.
Design/methodology/approach
Similar to Python for Facebook, a software package for the automatic retrieval of web page content was developed specifically for this study to extract data from the microblog Sina Weibo. Following the successful retrieval of 1,500 randomly selected messages from 34 universities in China, a two-level regression was performed using Mplus 7 to examine the association between the proposed relationships.
Findings
The findings reveal that messages with a friendly communication style increase both the number of comments and their positive tone; an authoritative style has no effect on customer engagement. The functions associated with message content (spreading information, building community or promoting action) influence customer liking and sharing. Building community tends to engage more customers than spreading information; promoting action often generates the least customer engagement in social media settings.
Originality/value
The study fills an important research gap in the service marketing literature as it pertains to nonprofit service organizations (i.e. universities) by identifying two types of online identities based on the communication style and the messages posted on social media. This study is the first to investigate the relationship between identity type and audience engagement, and to analyze the moderating factors of this relationship.
In this study, an eco-driving strategy is proposed to enhance the fuel efficiency of the connected autonomous vehicle (CAV) in car-following scenarios. First, the longitudinal dynamic model and ...fuel-consumption model of the vehicle are established. The speed trajectory of the preceding vehicles is obtained via vehicle-to-vehicle/vehicle-to-infrastructure communication function of CAVs, which is used as the reference of the following vehicles. Second, a model predictive controller is presented to optimise fuel consumption of the following vehicle. Finally, simulations in urban and highway driving conditions demonstrate that the proposed controller enables effective tracking of the preceding vehicle in an energy-efficient way. Comparisons between the second and the third following vehicles verify the fuel-saving benefits of the proposed method.
Bug fixing is a frequent and important task in Open Source Software (OSS) development and involves the communication of messages, which can serve for multiple purposes and affect the efficiency and ...effectiveness of corrective software activities.
This work is aimed at studying the communication functions of bug comments and their associations with fast and complete bug fixing in OSS development.
Over 500K comments and 89K bugs of 100 OSS projects were extracted from three Issue Tracking Systems. Six thousand comments were manually tagged to create a corpus of communication functions. The extracted comments were automatically tagged using machine learning algorithms and the corpus of communication functions. Statistical and correlation analyses were performed and the most frequent comments communicated during fast and successful bug fixing were identified.
Significant differences in the distribution of comments of fixed and not fixed bugs were found. Variations in the distribution of comments of bugs with different fixing time were also found. Referential comments that provided objective information were found to be the most frequent messages. Results showed that the percentages of conative and emotive comments are greater when bugs are resolved without the requested fixes and when fixes are implemented in a long time.
Associations between communication functions and bug fixing exist. The results of this work could be used to improve corrective tasks in OSS development and some other specific linguistic aspects should be studied in detail in OSS communities.
•Functions of comments vary with respect to fixed and not fixed bugs.•Functions of comments relate to bug fixing time.•Referential messages are frequent in bug fixing.•Referential and phatic comments relate to successful and fast bug fixing.•Conative and emotive messages can affect bug fixing.
To examine novice inter-rater agreement and clinical utility perspectives for speech and communication classification of children with cerebral palsy (CP).
Twenty-one clinicians (speech-language ...pathologists SLPs
= 11; physiotherapists PTs
= 5; occupational therapists OTs
= 5) novice to the Viking Speech Scale (VSS), Functional Communication Classification System (FCCS), and Communication Function Classification System (CFCS) rated eight unfamiliar children with CP (8-16 years) following classification orientation. Inter-rater agreement was examined between (a) novices, (b) novice SLPs vs. PTs and OTs, and (c) novice vs. expert (kappa statistics). Utility perceptions were scored regarding classification terminology, ease of use, assistive decision-making resources, and construct validity and were analysed using Kruskal-Wallis
-tests.
Rating agreement between novices was substantial (VSS,
= 0.72, 95% CI 0.53-0.92) to moderate (FCCS,
= 0.44, 95% CI 0.23-0.65; CFCS,
= 0.45, 95% CI 0.18-0.71), and almost perfect between novice and expert ratings (VSS,
= 0.89, 95% CI 0.86-0.92; FCCS,
= 0.89, 95% CI 0.86-0.92; CFCS,
= 0.86, 95% CI 0.82-0.91). Statistically significant differences, presented highest to lowest, were found for clinical utility: terminology (VSS, FCCS, CFCS;
= 0.02), assistive decision-making resources (FCCS, VSS, CFCS;
= 0.009), and construct validity (FCCS, CFCS, VSS;
< 0.001).
Novice raters achieved substantial agreement for speech classification, supporting utilisation in clinical, research, and CP register activities. Orientation to communication classification constructs, content, and instructions is recommended for novice raters.
Cervical perivascular sympathectomy (CPVS) can improve communication disorders in children with cerebral palsy (CP); however, there are no research reports on the factors affecting surgical efficacy. ...This study aimed to establish a nomogram for poor prognosis after CPVS. We collected data from 313 CP patients who underwent CPVS at the Neurosurgery Cerebral Palsy Center of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University from January 2019 to January 2023. Among them, 70% (
n
= 216) formed the training cohort and 30% (
n
= 97) the validation cohort. The general data and laboratory examination data of both groups were analyzed. In training cohort, 82 (37.96%) showed improved postoperative communication function. Logistic analysis identified motor function, serum alkaline phosphatase, serum albumin, and prothrombin activity as the prognostic factors. Using these four factors, a prediction model was constructed with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.807 (95% confidence interval CI, 0.743–0.870), indicating its ability to predict adverse outcomes after CPVS. The validation cohort results showed an AUC of 0.76 (95% CI, 0.650–0.869). The consistency curve and Hosmer–Lemeshow test (
χ
2
= 10.988 and
p
= 0.202, respectively) demonstrated good consistency between the model-predicted incidence and the actual incidence of poor prognosis. Motor function, serum alkaline phosphatase, serum albumin, and prothrombin activity are independent risk factors associated with the prognosis of communication disorders after CPVS. The combined prediction model has a good clinical prediction effect and has promising potential to be used for early prediction of prognosis of CPVS.
