This article proposes a structural and semantico-stylistic analysis of the comparative constructions through which Doina Ruști, in the Phanariot Manuscript, creates, through comparisons, images of ...the human body as a whole. Creating these structures, the author sometimes uses the canonical model, other times she gives rise to her own constructions, of an unusual plasticity, which, in many cases, tend towards metaphorization, their great force of suggestion deriving from the author’s ability to select and associate terms belonging to different semantic spheres in a unitary image, capable of expressing an affective value.
The paper deals with predicate nominals and related constructions in the Vakh dialect of Khanty They include nominal predicates (which typically express proper inclusion and equation), predicate ...adjectives, predicate locatives, existentials, possessive, comparative constructions, as well as predicate comitatives and abessives. These constructions tend to be similar grammatically in lacking a semantically rich lexical verb. The following elements can be used in these clauses: the copula was-'be', the copula wal- 'be, live', the existential negative predicate Sntim. NEG.EX, the predicative suffix -iki PRD, the possessive verb taja- 'have' and a zero copula. The study was carried out on two diachronic layers and revealed the changes in the Vakh dialect of Khanty--a drift to the Russian models in some cases. Keywords: Vakh Khanty predicate nominals and adjectives, locatives, existentials, possessive and comparative constructions, predicate comitatives and abessives.
This paper provides a first description of comparative constructions in Suansu, an unreported Tibeto-Burman language spoken in northeastern India, and frames the characteristics of Suansu comparative ...constructions from a typological perspective (following Stassen’s 1985 classification). To this purpose, comparative constructions from a sample of 25 Tibeto-Burman languages of the area are collected in an ad-hoc designed database and typologically discussed. Results reveal the presence of two main types that cluster geographically in the region, as well as high internal variation with respect to the subtypes. Based on the classification, Suansu is assigned to the Exceed comparative type, the only representative of this type in the sample.
The article is devoted to the study of the translation peculiarities of economic terms from english into the Tatar language in terms of their nominative structure. Difficulties in economic ...terminology translating are one of the main communication obstacles in the field of economic sciences. The material of the study was the English texts on economic themes. The terms were selected from newspapers such as The Wall Street Journal and The Economist. The study has practical importance, since the results can be used in classes of basic foreign language; they can also be practical materials in compiling a thematic dictionary.
The language for expressing comparisons is often complex and nuanced, making supporting natural language-based visual comparison a non-trivial task. To better understand how people reason about ...comparisons in natural language, we explore a design space of utterances for comparing data entities. We identified different parameters of comparison utterances that indicate what is being compared (i.e., data variables and attributes) as well as how these parameters are specified (i.e., explicitly or implicitly). We conducted a user study with sixteen data visualization experts and non-experts to investigate how they designed visualizations for comparisons in our design space. Based on the rich set of visualization techniques observed, we extracted key design features from the visualizations and synthesized them into a subset of sixteen representative visualization designs. We then conducted a follow-up study to validate user preferences for the sixteen representative visualizations corresponding to utterances in our design space. Findings from these studies suggest guidelines and future directions for designing natural language interfaces and recommendation tools to better support natural language comparisons in visual analytics.
In this paper the comparative of inferiority (‘A is less tall than B’) is discussed in regards to its coding and functioning. The classification of the marking is based on the connection of the ...marking of inferiority to the marking of other constructions of comparison. Thus, two main types of the marking are distinguished: specific and derived. The discussion of some problematic issues connected to the comparative of inferiority accompanies the description of the marking. The findings in the marking are interpreted as signs of the markedness of the comparative of inferiority. The remaining part of the paper is devoted to the description of the functions of the comparative of inferiority and its aspects of use as suggested by the data from Russian.
The article discusses the comparative constructions that modern poetess Vera Polozkova is using in her poetic texts. The structural types of comparative constructions that she prefers are revealed: ...comparisons with various unions, comparisons in the form of instrumental case, using preposition “like”, applying lexical means, genitive comparative constructions, etc. It is noted that V. Polozkova seeks to use original comparative constructions with unusual images, which are consistent with her general poetic manner. The main goal of the author when using comparative constructions is to increase the visibility of the image, the impact on the visual or auditory perception of the reader. It is concluded that although comparison is not the predominant means of expressiveness in V. Polozkova’s poems, its significance in her idiostyle is great.
This study offers an analysis of the methods of punctuation marking for stable comparisons in the punctuation practice of the 20th and 21st centuries. The research material comprises a micro-corpus, ...which includes more than 200 contexts of usage for stable comparisons, semantically similar free comparative constructions, as well as occasional transformations of stable comparisons. Punctuation actions involving stable comparisons are conceptualized as a distinct punctuation experiment, wherein diverse punctuation responses are formulated contingent upon the intrinsic nature of the stable comparisons themselves and the conditions governing their use. It is demonstrated that the punctuation practice of the 20th and 21st centuries reflects a trend towards punctuation differentiation not only between stable comparisons and free comparative constructions but also within stable comparisons themselves. The analysis of punctuation facts leads to the conclusion that the punctuation marking of stable comparisons is determined by derivational, pragmatic, and context-syntactic factors, which are taken into account by writers in their punctuation actions. It is shown that while derivational and context-syntactic factors prompt punctuation marking of stable comparisons, pragmatic factors merely render the use of delimiting commas more preferable. It is emphasized that adequate punctuation codification in the realm of stable comparisons cannot be achieved without reference to the evidence of punctuation practice.

Welcome to Linguistic Typology at the Crossroads (LTC), a new journal dedicated to the crossroads where linguistic typology meets its neighboring fields. A crossroads is not only and necessarily a ...place where a choice must be made: this is the point of view of the traveler, wondering which way to go. If we take a bird’s-eye view and observe the crossroads from above, we see much more than choices. A Crossroads is the place where different directions, and different travelers, meet or follow each other. Thanks to the crossroads, it is possible to change and exchange, and the very concept of ‘step forward’ opens itself to diagonals and curves. The crossroads is where future is imagined and innovation occurs, thanks to the reciprocal influence of intersecting perspectives. Crossroads means meeting, exchanging, converging, choosing, diverging, changing, and possibly making the difference. This journal aims to take the point of view of the crossroads, capturing the moment when linguistic typology intersects other fields, changing and exchanging methods, theories and data, in the belief that a closer look at the crossroads may reveal converging paths and new directions to go.
Amplifying comparative constructions are widely used in literary works of many authors, thus constituting an exceptional flavour of a literary work. The article aims to highlight procedures, ...techniques, methods, strategies and tactics that prove useful to faithfully reproduce English amplifying comparative constructions in Ukrainian translations. We have conducted an experiment aimed at identifying individual respondents' creative approaches to the reproduction of these units into the Ukrainian language, taking into account their translation experience, creative approach, the style of the author, the level of knowledge of the source language and the target language, their background knowledge.
