Producing metallic hydrogen has been a great challenge in condensed matter physics. Metallic hydrogen may be a room-temperature superconductor and metastable when the pressure is released and could ...have an important impact on energy and rocketry. We have studied solid molecular hydrogen under pressure at low temperatures. At a pressure of 495 gigapascals, hydrogen becomes metallic, with reflectivity as high as 0.91. We fit the reflectance using a Drude free-electron model to determine the plasma frequency of 32.5 ± 2.1 electron volts at a temperature of 5.5 kelvin, with a corresponding electron carrier density of 7.7 ± 1.1 × 1023 particles per cubic centimeter, which is consistent with theoretical estimates of the atomic density. The properties are those of an atomic metal. We have produced the Wigner-Huntington dissociative transition to atomic metallic hydrogen in the laboratory.
Magnons and phonons are fundamental quasiparticles in a solid and can be coupled together to form a hybrid quasi-particle. However, detailed experimental studies on the underlying Hamiltonian of this ...particle are rare for actual materials. Moreover, the anharmonicity of such magnetoelastic excitations remains largely unexplored, although it is essential for a proper understanding of their diverse thermodynamic behaviour and intrinsic zero-temperature decay. Here we show that in non-collinear antiferromagnets, a strong magnon-phonon coupling can significantly enhance the anharmonicity, resulting in the creation of magnetoelastic excitations and their spontaneous decay. By measuring the spin waves over the full Brillouin zone and carrying out anharmonic spin wave calculations using a Hamiltonian with an explicit magnon-phonon coupling, we have identified a hybrid magnetoelastic mode in (Y,Lu)MnO3 and quantified its decay rate and the exchange-striction coupling term required to produce it.

*≈305 K) that demonstrate the absence of the two most prominent features of the magnetic excitation spectrum of the cuprates: the X-shaped ‘hourglass’ response and the resonance mode in the superconducting state. Instead, the response is Y-shaped, gapped and significantly enhanced below
T
*, and hence a prominent signature of the pseudogap state.
Ultrafast terahertz (THz) pump-probe spectroscopy reveals an unusual out-of-equilibrium Cooper pair nonlinear dynamics and a nonequilibrium state driven by femtosecond (fs) photoexcitation of ...superconductivity (SC) in iron pnictides. Following fast SC quench via hot-phonon scattering, a second, abnormally slow (many hundreds of picoseconds), SC quench regime is observed prior to any recovery. Importantly, a nonlinear pump fluence dependence is identified for this remarkably long prebottleneck dynamics that are sensitive to both doping and temperature. Here, using quantum kinetic modeling we argue that the buildup of excitonic interpocket correlation between electron-hole (e-h) quasiparticles (QP) quenches SC after fs photoexcitation leading to a long-lived, many-QP excitonic state.
Topological charge Q classifies non-trivial spin textures and determines many of their characteristics. Most abundant are topological textures with |Q| ≤ 1, such as (anti)skyrmions, (anti)merons or ...(anti)vortices. In this study we created and imaged in real space magnetic skyrmion bundles, that is, multi-Q three-dimensional skyrmionic textures. These textures consist of a circular spin spiral that ties together a discrete number of skyrmion tubes. We observed skyrmion bundles with integer Q values up to 55. We show here that electric currents drive the collective motion of these particle-like textures similar to skyrmions. Bundles with Q ≠ 0 exhibit a skyrmion Hall effect with a Hall angle of ~62°, whereas Q = 0 bundles, the so-called skyrmioniums, propagate collinearly with respect to the current flow, that is, with a skyrmion Hall angle of ~0°. The experimental observation of multi-Q spin textures adds another member to the family of magnetic topological textures, which may serve in future spintronic devices.
We study electronic ordering instabilities of twisted bilayer graphene around the filling ofn=2electrons per supercell, where correlated insulator state and superconductivity have been recently ...observed. Motivated by the Fermi surface nesting and the proximity to Van Hove singularity, we introduce a hot-spot model to study the effect of various electron interactions systematically. Using the renormalization group method, we find thatdorp-wave superconductivity and charge or spin density wave emerge as the two types of leading instabilities driven by Coulomb repulsion. The density-wave state has a gapped energy spectrum aroundn=2and yields a single doubly degenerate pocket upon doping ton>2. The intertwinement of density wave and superconductivity and the quasiparticle spectrum in the density-wave state are consistent with experimental observations.
In this Colloquium recent advances in the field of quantum heat transport are reviewed. This topic has been investigated theoretically for several decades, but only during the past 20 years have ...experiments on various mesoscopic systems become feasible. A summary of the theoretical basis for describing heat transport in one-dimensional channels is first provided. The main experimental investigations of quantized heat conductance due to phonons, photons, electrons, and anyons in such channels are then presented. These experiments are important for understanding the fundamental processes that underlie the concept of a heat conductance quantum for a single channel. An illustration of how one can control the quantum heat transport by means of electric and magnetic fields, and how such tunable heat currents can be useful in devices, is first given. This lays the basis for realizing various thermal device components such as quantum heat valves, rectifiers, heat engines, refrigerators, and calorimeters. Also of interest are fluctuations of quantum heat currents, both for fundamental reasons and for optimizing the most sensitive thermal detectors; at the end of the Colloquium the status of research on this topic is given.
