Use of organic compounds containing nitrogen (N), oxygen (O), sulfur (S), and phosphorus (P) heteroatoms in their molecular structures is one of the most effective, economic, and practical corrosion ...inhibitors. The effectiveness of the heteroatoms toward metallic corrosion inhibition follows the order: P > S > N > O. The metal‐inhibitor interactions involve the charge sharing between the heteroatoms and empty d‐orbitals of the surface metallic atoms; therefore, a heteroatom with lower electronegativity value is more potent to form strong bonding (charge sharing) with metallic surface as compared to more electronegative heteroatom. Literature study reveals that almost all corrosion inhibitors have either one or more heteroatoms in their molecular structures particularly in the form of polar functional groups, which enhance their adsorption tendency on metallic surface. Present review paper features the collection of some major works that have been published on metallic corrosion inhibition containing these P, S, O, and N heteroatoms. Since now, several review articles have been published describing the application of N and O atoms; however, the reviews on use of P and S heteroatoms are scare. Therefore, aim of the present article was to mainly describe the collection of corrosion inhibitors containing S and P heteroatoms.

The use of heterocyclic compounds is established as one of the most successful, economic and practical techniques of corrosion protection. The heterocyclic compounds develop into useful by adsorbing at the metal-environment interface using their electron dense centers, called adsorption centers. However, because of their relatively smaller size, they provide insufficient surface protection. More so, their synthesis is connected with the use of expensive and toxic chemicals, solvents and catalysts. Therefore, there is an extreme demand of ecofriendly alternatives of relatively bigger molecular size. In this direction, the use of natural and synthetic polymers as anticorrosive materials is gaining particular attention. Due to their polymeric nature and presence of polar functional groups at the periphery, the polymers effectively adsorb on the metallic surface and provide excellent surface protection. More so, the exercise of natural polymeric alternatives including carbohydrates, proteins and their derivatives offers a new alternative path to replace traditional toxic corrosion inhibitors. The present review paper aims to collect outcomes of major reports describing the corrosion inhibition potential of natural and synthetic polymers. Advantages of polymers over traditional corrosion inhibitors and the mechanism of corrosion inhibition using polymers have also been discussed.

Amino acids are the promising biomolecules as eco-friendly inhibitors for the corrosion protection of materials. In this work, two amino acid derivatives (MPT and BPT) were synthesized as green inhibitors, and their corrosion inhibition performance for N80 carbon steel in CO2-saturated formation water was studied by electrochemical tests and surface analysis. It is found that both MPT and BPT exhibit outstanding inhibitive effect (inhibition efficiency of 99.26 % for MPT and 99.44 % for BPT), which is significantly higher than those already reported amino acid derivative inhibitors. The inhibition mechanism of MPT and BPT was also revealed by theoretical calculations.
Protection of metals in neutral media with pH 5.0–9.0 (in humid atmospheres and various aqueous solutions) can be achieved by formation of thin coatings (up to several tens of nm) on their surfaces ...due to adsorption and more complex chemical interactions of organic corrosion inhibitors (OCIs) with the metal to be protected. The review contains three sections. The first section deals with coatings formed in aqueous solutions, while the second one, with those formed in organic and water-organic solvents. Here we consider metal protection by coatings mainly formed by the best-known classes of OCI (carboxylates, organophosphates and phosphonates) and estimation of its efficiency. The third section discusses the peculiarities of protection of metals in the vapor-gas phase, i.e., by volatile OCIs, and a relatively new type of metal protection against atmospheric corrosion by the so-called chamber inhibitors. OCIs with relatively low volatility under normal conditions can be used as chamber OCIs. To obtain a protective coating on the surfaces of metal items, they are placed in a chamber inside which an increased concentration of vapors of a chamber OCI is maintained by increasing the temperature. This review mainly focuses on the protection of iron, steels, copper and zinc.
In this study, we chose to synthesize new sugar based glucose derivatives as ecological corrosion inhibitors for carbon steel in acidic medium. The products obtained in the form of syrupy liquids, ...and the purity of obtained compounds was characterized by NMR spectroscopy analysis. The corrosion inhibition activities for both compounds were evaluated by electrochemical and rheological methods. Thus, the results of the experimental tests have been confirmed by theoretical studies (DFT, MC and MD simulations). The surface study of carbon steel has been characterized by the scanning electron spectroscopy (SEM). The gravimetric solutions were identified using UV-Vis spectroscopy and Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Spectroscopy (ICP-OES).

Metal corrosion is the degradation of a metal due to its reaction with the environment. One of the most effective ways of securing metal surface from corrosion is the use of corrosion inhibitors. ...Surfactants are an important category of corrosion inhibitors that have intrinsic amphiphilicity. The anticorrosion efficacy of surfactants is closely related to their chemical composition, molecular structure, and adsorption affinity on the metal surface. This review first summarizes the corrosion inhibition mechanism of surfactants and elucidates the influence of charge properties and structural characteristics on their corrosion inhibition efficiency, and then discusses the recent development of novel surfactants for metal anticorrosion application. Next, the synergistic effects of surfactants and other materials for metal anticorrosion are elucidated. We finally discuss the problems and challenges for the development of surfactant corrosion inhibitors and give a perspective in this field, hoping to provide help for future research.

The adsorption tendency of choline based ionic liquids namely, 2-hydroxyethyl-trimethyl-ammonium chloride ChlCl, 2-hydroxyethyl-trimethyl-ammonium iodide Chll and 2-hydroxyethyl-trimethyl-ammonium acetate ChlAc on mild steel surface in 1 M HCl has been demonstrated using experimental and theoretical approaches. Weight loss analysis showed that inhibition efficiencies of ChlCl, ChlI and ChlAc increases with their concentrations. The maximum efficiencies of are in the order; ChlCl (92.04%) < ChlI (96.02%) < ChlAc (96.59%) at 17.91 × 10−4 M concentration. Electrochemical analyses (OCP, PDP and EIS) data provide good support to the weight loss study and showed that investigated ionic liquids behaved as interfacial and mixed type corrosion inhibitors. The adsorption of ChlCl, ChlI and ChlAc at mild steel/1 M HCl (electrolyte) interfaces obeyed the Temkin adsorption isotherm. The adsorption of studied ionic liquids on the metallic surface was further supported by SEM-EDX and AFM methods. DFT and Monte Carlo (MC) Simulations based computational approaches were undertaken to support the experimental findings. DFT studies revealed that ChlCl, ChlI and ChlAc interact with metallic surface through donor-acceptor interactions in which the anionic parts act as electron donor (HOMO) and cationic parts behaved as electron acceptor (LUMO). The MC simulations study showed that studied ionic liquids adsorb spontaneously on mild steel surface and their effectiveness depends upon nature of anionic moieties. The experimental and theoretical analyses show that the investigated inhibition efficiencies of studied ionic liquids followed the order: ChlCl < ChlI < ChlAc.

Chitosan is a natural biodegradable biopolymer, and the structure of its unit is 2-amino-d-glucopyranose that has been it more attractive to applied as natural corrosion inhibitor of metals for ...different area. Functionalization chitosan by surfactant is necessary to improve some of its properties such as solubility, surface activity, and corrosion inhibition efficiency. Corrosion of metals is a global problem particularly in petroleum industry field needs to favorably inhibition process using environmentally friendly inhibitors such chitosan. In this work, it was presented on researches which taken chitosan functionalized by different types of surfactants as green corrosion inhibitor of metals in petroleum field. It was concluded from displayed researches data that functionalization of chitosan by surfactant could be on three categories; cationic, anionic and nonionic form. Otherwise, the unsaturated chain, benzene rings, and quaternary ammonium groups greatly increase the inhibition efficiency compared to hydrophobic chains. Furthermore, the nanoparticles of chitosan nonionic surfactant or those assembled on silver nanoparticles exhibited high inhibition efficiency. The inhibition performance of chitosan surfactant categories are more effective even at lower concentrations, and form a protective film onto metal surface, as well as and the inhibitor adsorption mechanism is mostly mixed type and obey Langmuir model.
