A growing interest in the study of discourses has spread in management research, but so far, it has mostly relied on in‐depth qualitative analyses of textual material. With the increasing ...availability of large textual data, several challenges arise. This paper offers a mixed‐methods approach to integrate critical discourse analysis with structural topic modeling to turn these challenges into valuable opportunities. We argue that combining both approaches overcomes their limitations and provides great potential for exploring phenomena that matter in our mediatized society. Based on an explanatory sequential mixed‐methods design, we develop a stepwise model that provides practical and theoretical guidance to conduct a critical analysis of large textual data. Our illustrative example focuses on the discursive legitimation struggles around the tobacco industry. We demonstrate how an integrated mixed‐methods approach allows capturing the breadth and depth of discourses used by different actors in the tobacco debates.
Ever since Britain voted to leave the European Union, emotions have dominated the public debate. How negative emotions, such as anger, have impacted the Brexit vote, has been widely researched. Less ...attention has been focused on the role positive emotions played in debating Britain’s relationship to the EU. Using critical discourse analysis and drawing on appraisal theory to investigate the representation of emotions in six sample texts from a corpus of so-called ‘Euromyths’ (N = 334), this study argues that positive emotions were used to create a myth in Roland Barthes’ sense to naturalise a Eurosceptic ideology of British defiance and power.
Due to the Treaty of Trianon - which was signed at the end of World War 1 in 1920 - Hungary lost two thirds of its former territory, as well as the inhabitants of these areas. The book aims to reveal ...why the treaty still plays a role in Hungarian national identity construction, by studying the alternative conceptualization of the treaty and its consequences. The cognitive linguistic research explores Hungarian politicians' conceptual system about Trianon, with special interest on conceptual metaphors. It also analyzes the factors that may motivate the emergence of the conceptual system, as well as its synchronic diversity and diachronic changes. The monograph provides a niche insight into the conceptual basis of how contemporary citizens of Hungary interpret the treaty of Trianon and its consequences. The book will be of interest to cognitive and cultural linguists, cultural anthropologists, or any professionals working on national identity construction.
Using women's bodies in product marketing advertisements is nothing new. The female body is deliberately presented as a marketing strategy. In practice, it is not uncommon for women to be categorized ...into three trinities, namely, girl, wife, and entertainer. What's worse, this is justified and reproduced by various media. The Gadis Kretek novel is a literary work that juxtaposes the female body with cigarette advertisements. This research was conducted to uncover how women's bodies are selected, used, and displayed for marketing activities of cigarette products that are attached to men by society and become a symbol of masculinity. The method that will be used as a data analysis tool is Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis, which focuses on aspects of linguistic practice, discursive practice, and social practice. The results of this study indicate that in product promotion, the female body is used as a desire production machine that will attract potential buyers. Women in ad frames are also categorized based on the Girl-Wife-Entertainer trinity, where the three of them have their own identities but are still presented as complements to men. From this research, it can be seen that literary works also commodify discourses on beauty and the female body. The female body seems to be an affirmation of the construction of masculinity.
This article examines right-leaning press representations of people living in the UK who can't speak English, or at least speak English well, following the 2011 Census, which was the first to ask ...respondents about their main language and proficiency in English. The analysis takes a corpus-assisted approach to critical discourse analysis, based on a 1.8 million-word corpus of right-leaning newspaper articles about 'speak(ing) English' in the years following this historic Census (2011 to 2016). The analysis reveals the tendency for the press to focus on immigrants - particularly in the contexts of education and health - who are represented with recourse to a series of argumentation strategies, or 'topoi'. Over the course of this paper, we argue that these topoi are problematic, as they present paradoxes, obscure the role of the Government in ensuring integration, overlook the difficulties of language learning and cultural assimilation, and generally contribute to a broader anti-immigrant UK media narrative which serves to legitimise exclusionary and discriminatory practices against people from minority linguistic and ethnic backgrounds.
Critical discourse analysis (CDA) is a qualitative analytical approach for critically describing, interpreting, and explaining the ways in which discourses construct, maintain, and legitimize social ...inequalities. CDA rests on the notion that the way we use language is purposeful, regardless of whether discursive choices are conscious or unconscious. CDA takes a number of different approaches and incorporates a variety of methods that depend on research goals and theoretical perspectives. This methodological guide presents a general CDA analytic framework and illustrates the application of that framework to a systematic literature review of CDA studies in education. CDA research studies are no less likely than other forms of scholarly research to reproduce ideological assumptions; qualitative rigor and trustworthiness are discussed.

Following the shift towards quantitative, corpus-based analysis in queer linguistics, I examine the usage of identity labels to explore the binary relationships and predicted normative effects in the ...case of the online community r/lgbt, a subreddit dedicated to minority identity labels and discussion. I analyze the distribution of the most frequent identity labels of the subreddit in a 2-year period with distributional semantic models, vector-based matrices that capture word distributions as numeric representations, showing evidence for various binaries that co-construct each other within the corpus. Additionally, I utilize concordances and collocations to examine the discourses surrounding gender and sexuality in the comments and submissions subcorpora, showing a more queer-aligned perspective in the former and a label-searching perspective in the latter. Finally, the results from these techniques demonstrate the overall complex relationships between the many types of labels currently in use and between the subreddit users and their feelings about adopting specific labels to describe their identities.
This study investigates the construction and (re)negotiation of the identity boundaries in the context of a white nationalist online forum. Using over three million words of data, a corpus linguistic ...approach is combined with elements of critical discourse analysis, namely social actor (van Leeuwen, 1996) and transitivity (Halliday and Matthiessen, 2004) analyses, to examine the positioning of social actors in relation to one another. The data shows that, despite an assumption amongst some scholars of a united and ideologically coherent in-group of extremists, forum members often disagree on the nature and boundaries of both their racial (white) and ideological (white nationalist) identities. This calls into question the value of the `in-group' concept as we currently understand it. Instead, the `in-group' in the far-right context should be seen as slippery and unfixed, comprising multiple overlapping but distinct identities.
Two phenomena have been present in multiethnic/multinational Bosnia and Herzegovina since its independence from SFR Yugoslavia: massive depopulation and strong nationalism(s). Although nationalism ...influences which nation/ethnic group should produce and how, the links connecting these nationalistic ideologies and pronatalist population policies in the country/entity have been, almost paradoxically, left on the margins of the previous studies. This paper asks to what extent nationalist ideologies are present in the pronatalist population policy discourse in the Serb-dominated entity Republic of Srpska and what nationalism it is. After developing Spectrum of Nationalism(s), a framework underlined by Siniša Malešević’s views on nationalism and ethnicity as ideologies, the paper provides an overview of Bosnia’s demographic processes and brief insights into Republic of Srpska pronatalist policies through a semi-structured literature review. Keeping in mind that media profoundly influences public opinion, discursively moulding policy debates, two most recent cases of pronatalist campaigns and programs in the Republic of Srpska: Let Our Children Be Born and National Programme of Demographic Revival, are analysed via critical discourse analysis (CDA). Selected media articles predominantly cover the period from 2018 onwards, concentrating on the commentaries of the ruling SNSD political nomenklatura. The analysis displays the powerful influence of nationalism on the discourse on population policies. However, on the spectrum of nationalism(s), civic nationalism seems only to be pro forma defined, while in RS’s reality, the abovementioned path has continued toward an ethnonationalism direction.
