This open access book presents a series of speculative, experimental modes of inquiry in the present times of environmental damage that have come to be known as the age of the Anthropocene. ...Throughout the book authors develop more nuanced ways of engaging with the environmentally vulnerable Arctic. They counter distancing, exoticising, and even apocalyptic imaginaries of the Arctic by staying proximate with mundane places and beings of the north. The volume engages and plays with familiar tourism concepts, such as hospitality, visiting, difference, care, openness, and distance, while expanding the focus from binary and human-centric approaches of hosts and guests to questions of wellbeing among multispecies communities. The transdisciplinary group of contributors share a curiosity about how staying proximate may provide theoretical depth and epistemological openings to attend to current tensions and to diversify the ways we do and enact research. Thus, each chapter provides a methodological experiment with proximity, developing diverse ways of envisioning and storying more-than-human worlds.
Alarming environmental shifts and disasters have raised public awareness and anxieties regarding the future of the planet. While planetary in scale, the negative effects of this global crisis are ...distributed unequally, affecting some of the already most fragile communities most intensely, thus contributing to rising global inequality. The pairing of environmental crises and a sense of inadequacy facing hitherto celebrated models of citizenry informs a current spirit of the times. The contributors to this volume place ethnographic or world cultures museums at the centre of these debates - these museums have been embroiled in longstanding debates about their histories, collections, and practices in relation to the colonial past.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to reflect how the pandemic experience has shaped Italian society, under some key aspects. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The pandemic is changing much ...of our lives: relationships, politics, economics, religious attitudes, European and global scenarios. The essay tries to study the most important dynamics in this epochal change. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The argumentation starts from anthropological and ethics aspects to end with social and political elements of pandemic time. RESEARCH RESULTS: The essay try to present a multidisciplinary approach to understand the pandemia. The most important result is to “read” the pandemia as a multifaced phenomena. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: It’s important to encourage studies where the complexity of our world is interpreted by researchers fo different disciplines. In this particular historical moment, probably, we should do the same lecture about the many wars and conflicts around the world.

Food tourism or food and tourism has emerged as a major theme for recent tourism research. This paper critically reviews and evaluates this growing subject area of tourism research thus identifies ...the core concepts associated with food tourism as major research themes, perspectives, and disciplinary approaches. Using the process of cognitive mapping this paper discovers that the literature on food tourism is dominated by five themes: motivation, culture, authenticity, management and marketing, and destination orientation. The authors conceptualise food tourism research from a cultural anthropology perspective, given that much of the literature on food tourism defines cuisine as place and is used in many forms and interactions with tourists.
•Terms used in food tourism research are not consistent, but there is a preference for terms with a consumer focus.•A supply-demand paradigm has led the growth of food tourism research.•Motivation, culture, authenticity, management, marketing and destination orientation are most common research themes.•Food tourism is about cultural anthropology.•Food tourism management is the management of food cultural resources.
The aim of the work is to investigate the problem of creativity based on the potential of cultural analysis. The methodology of the research is based on general scientific principles, namely, ...terminological and systemic. The aim and objectives of the publication led to the usage of such research methods as analysis, synthesis, generalization, which made it possible to clarify the meaning of a number of concepts and terms. Scientific novelty. Emphasis is made on the importance of interdisciplinarity, and personalization as factors that “anatomize” creativity, highlighting such structural element as “artistic creativity”, deepening in this way, the idea of a creative personality that can not only create but also change the paradigm of art. The idea of “cultural turn” is involved, in the logic of which the idea of creativity is corrected. Conclusions. Based on the interpretation of the phenomenon “creativity - artistic creativity” and taking into account the experience of Ukrainian experts, a new definition of creativity is proposed: “Creativity is a purposeful activity to create fundamentally new spiritual and material values that have both universal and national historical and cultural significance”. The stated definition is based on an interdisciplinary basis and outlines areas for further theoretical investigation in the sphere of cultural knowledge, as it allows to identify topics that need deep study in the context of factors of cultural analysis.
Fashion, by definition, implies (and requires) constant changes and innovations. This paper, using the example of the fashion production Sirogojno Style, follows the process of the adaptation of the ...narrative about the past, by which the fashion production Sirogojno Style was recognizable for many years in the Yugoslavian and international fashion scene, to the context of contemporary fashion. The focus, on this occasion, is George Styler's collection NetWork, presented in 2014 at London Fashion Week; more specifically, the part of the collection that was made in collaboration with the “Sirogojno Company”. The study of the new narrative function of Sirogojno knitwear in the context of contemporary fashion was based on written and visual sources as well as on data gathered during a semi-structured interview done in April 2021 with the fashion creator George Styler. The aim of this study is to contribute to contemporary anthropological studies of fashion and clothing.
This paper deals with the transdisciplinary research area of border studies, in the context of ethnological and anthropological research in Southeast Europe. Border studies have expanded in the last ...three decades due to paradigmatic and sociopolitical shifts, with visible transfer of focus towards the issues of ‘diffusion’ of border practices and discourses sometimes termed as b/ordering. Europe and the Balkans experienced contradictory processes of parallel relaxation and abolishing of certain borders, while others are being tightened and established, which is also interpreted anthropologically. Once thought of as specific, Balkans (re)bordering of the 1990s found its b/ordering descendants in the last 20 years throughout Europe and the general rise of border thinking. Besides the traditional approach focusing on liminal and borderlands communities, anthropology in Southeast Europe has also started to investigate not only local communities, but also so-called mobile communities. Anthropology also possesses methodological capacity to discern b/ordering practices and discourses stemming from spatial borders which are not solely induced by the nation-state, and to grasp not only spatial, but also temporal aspects of b/ordering. By combining the ethnographic method, local focus and by primarily researching permanent or contemporary communities defined by the borders and b/ordering, ethnology and anthropology in this part of Europe can substantially contribute to the border studies.
In this paper we will present everyday clothing in the city and village, during the XX century, on the ground of Novi Pazar. The emphasis is placed on the women`s everyday clothing and special ...features that are reflected primarily in confessional practices. In addition to the differences in clothing that arose from the confessional practices, we will point out to the others aspects which influenced on the diversity of clothing, such as – education, employment, the influence of the external environment (people outside the family, the media and etc.), economic status etc. Differences conditioned by the status of women in society, which changed significantly after World War II, with greater emancipation of women and their gradual exit from the patriarchal family framework caused changes in clothing appearance. The aim of this paper is to present the complexity of everyday clothing practices of women and its changes in the territory of Novi Pazar and its environment.
The primary function of introducing the so-called “camouflage suit” or camo suit into the military and police formations in the late 1980s also had the consequence of transferring its functions to a ...secondary level, by the sheer proliferation of such sets used in war activities during the breakup of the former Yugoslavia. For the ethnographic heritage, the challenge of the liminal status of the camouflage suit within the framework of men’s work pattern in the redefined folk economy is reflected in the short period of its establishment and use. On the other hand, its widespread use and an ongoing cultural phenomenon support the musealization of samples of such a clothing pattern, as well as the need to set up research on the impact of folk economy on clothing culture and vice versa. As camouflage suits were obtained and used in the process of integration into the everyday work pattern of members of rural communities, retired men and “weekend farmers” engaged in agricultural activities, they became a mirror image of the dissolution of late socialism as a social system in Serbia. This new status has contributed to the redefinition of the function and content of new men’s clothing patterns, in line with the broader changes in the value system and redistribution of state and social authority. Consequently, anthropologization of museological discourse creates suitable conditions for discussing the existence of the tertiary communicative role and significance of all types of military apparel, including camouflage suits.
