By conducting a case study of two diaconal institutions, Samariterhemmet in Uppsala/Sweden and the Evangelisches Diakoniewerk Schwäbisch Hall e.V. in Germany, the thesis compares the roles of church ...diaconal work within the Swedish and the German welfare system. These two systems are characterised by the different roles given to independent welfare organisations. The overarching research question is if and in which way the two diaconal institutions are effected by current changes within the field of welfare and how these changes challenge them to redefine their roles. The material analysed contains written documents, interviews with selected representatives and the results of participant observation in both institutions. As changes in the roles of independent welfare organisations were expected the results are unexpected. The two diaconal institutions show considerable persistence. Neither the orientation of their fields of work nor their own definitions of their roles within the welfare system have changed during the 1990s. In addition, the study reveals that both institutions regard themselves as a critical voice within the welfare system although their welfare engagement differs considerably. The German institution is a huge welfare provider while the Swedish institution conducts targeted initiatives. The analysis of four decisions within hospital work reveals that security of planning and freedom of action motivate the institutions to undertake responsibility for social services. The study points especially to the fields of education and research helping the institutions to maintain and to develop the diaconal profile. Altogether the results underline the need for more research on the meso-level of the third sector. This would contribute to a more nuanced discussion on the future role of independent welfare organisations within the Swedish and the German welfare system.

Sykepleiersken er sannsynligvis diakonisse. Hun bærer kors rundt halsen og har en typisk diakonissehette med sløyfe ...under haken Hver søster fikk et individuelt bibelsitat med seg ved vigsling som diakonisse.

fyysinen kuvaus: Diakonin pukuun puettu, seisova nuori mies, jolla hieman olkapäiden yläpuolelle ulottuva laineileva tukka. Oikea jalka työntyy hieman eteenpäin, helman alta näkyy pyöreäkärkisen ...kengän kärki. Diakoni kannattelee vasemmassa kädessään nauhalla tai helalla suljettua paksua kirjaa, oikeassa kädessä ollut tunnusesine on hävinnyt. Kynnet veistetty esiin. Soikeat kasvot työntyvät hieman eteen alas, otsatukka on lyhyt, poskipäät ovat korkeat, silmät suuret ja avoimet. Luomet on veistetty esiin. Vasen silmä on oikeaa hieman alempana. Huulet ovat täyteläiset, vasen suupieli on kääntynyt ylöspäin. Nenä on melko suuri ja ulkoneva. Dalmatikassa on pyöreä kaula-aukko, jota reunustaa leveä, nyörimäinen kaulus sekä leveät hihat ja sivuilla pystyhalkiot. Alba näkyy dalmatikan helman alta sekä kaulassa kapeana reunuksena. Albalaskeutuu jalustalle hieman ulospäin taittuen. Kädet on veistetty erikseen ja kiinnitetty puutapeilla. Oikean käden sivuun porattu suuri, käden selän läpi kulkeva reikä, joka näyttäisi liittyvän veistoksen kyljen tapilla täytettyyn reikään. Myös vartalon vasemmalla sivulla tapilla täytetty reikä. Jalusta on korkea ja edestä pyöristetty. Veistos on koverrettu melko syvään takaa koko vartalon pituudelta. Pää on jätetty massiiviseksi, mutta takana hiuksia ei ole veistetty esiin. Kasvoissa, jalustassa ja kirjassa on pystyhalkeamia. Puulaji on mahdollisesti lehmusta tai esim. leppää. Päälaella on tapilla täytetty porattu reikä. Värit ovat irronneet tai poistettu lähes kokonaan. Kasvoissa on hieman vaalea väriä, vasemman silmän iris sininen, hiuksissa kultaa, albassa valkoista, kirjassa punaista.

Ihonväri on harmahtava, silmät on piirretty ohuilla tummilla viivoilla. Iirikset ovat siniset, suu punainen, hiukset ruskeankeltaiset. Alba on valkoinen, dalmatika hopeanvärinen (nyt tummunut) ja sen vuori sininen. Kynsien rajaviivat on piirretty mustalla. Jalustasta on lohjennut pala vasemmalta. Oikean käden etusormet ovat poikki, dalmatikan poimut ovat kolhiintuneet. Veistos on valmistettu yhdestä puusta ja veistetty takaa suoraksi. Päälaella on tasainen pyöreä alue, jonka keskellä pieni terävän piikin tms. tekemä reikä. Myös pohjassa on pieni reikä.

Sharp shoe tips appear under the alba. The stand plate is flat and angular at the front. The skin color is greyish, the eyes are drawn with thin dark lines. The irises are blue, the mouth is red, the hair is amber. Alba is white, dalmatika is silver in colour (now darkened) and its lining is blue. The border lines of the nails are drawn in black.
