While the retraction of trap is found throughout the American West, it is primarily associated with California and supposed Californian values in both the popular media and the ears of Californian ...listeners. This study investigates the local construction of meaning for a supralocal sound change by examining perceptions of trap backing in Kansas, a locale that has also undergone front lax vowel retraction. Thirty-five college students heard matched-guise stimuli differing only by trap F2, guessed speakers’ regional origin, and rated speakers on 14 affective scales. Listeners associated trap backing with California (despite local participation in the sound shift) and general prestige. The authors suggest that this association with general prestige may help to explain the presence of this vowel shift in Kansas despite considerable ideological differences with California. They argue that these results highlight the interaction between local construction of meaning and broader national discourses for a sound change: while stereotypical associations with a sound change can spread rapidly through means like popular media, stance and identity associations are constructed at the local level.
This article discusses the history and regional variation of the complex preposition off of (e.g., I got off of the bus). The study is intended to uncover detailed information about the use of the ...form from Early Modern to Present-Day English by examining a variety of linguistic corpora and databases from different perspectives. In addition to charting the history and present-day variation of off of, the study will make a methodological contribution to historical dialectology by showing that there are extensive, severely underused resources that can reveal valuable information about the geographical variation of English even if they were not originally designed for that purpose. Most crucially, the article introduces a way to investigate Early Modern English from the perspective of regional variation, thus paving the way for future research in a field that has been extremely challenging to study in the past.
This linguistic study investigates the usage of the Sicilian language in three generations of Sicilians living in Sicily and abroad. Findings conclude that sociological factors such as age, sex and ...context affect situational usage. A family case study reveals that linguistic attitude affects language usage outside of Sicily. Based on the results confirming Sicilian language disuse in Italy and abroad, several recommendations are included on preserving the Sicilian language in future generations.
This paper presents the results of a survey of phonological, lexical, and morphosyntactic variation in British English, based on over 14,000 responses. We map twelve variables using geospatial ...“hotspot” analysis. One of our aims is to document the patterning of under- and unstudied variables. A second aim is to track changes in real time, which we do by comparing our findings to those of the 1950s-era Survey of English Dialects (SED; Orton, 1962). We improve upon previous dialectological work by paying careful attention to the phonemic status of mergers and splits: In our contemporary data, we do this by asking subjects if they have a phonemic contrast; in the SED data, we do this by superimposing the isoglosses for individual phones. We find evidence for both stability and change; we document previously unverified patterns. Perhaps most importantly, we identify a number of directions for future research.
The main aim of this article is to discuss the findings of a monograph published half a century ago in the context of the evolution of the Russian subdialect of the Old Believers in Poland since ...then. In their diachronic studies, contemporary researchers need to find a starting point for comparison in the present study it is the first and so far the only comprehensive monographic description of the language of the Old Believers living in Poland: Rosyjska gwara starowierców w województwach olsztyńskim i białostockim (1968) The Russian Subdialect of the Old Believers in the Olsztyn and the Białystok Provinces. This article compares characteristic features of the dialect in question in the 1960s and today on the basis of the latest scholarly works and language materials. It also considers the value of the study published fifty years ago.
The author presents the functions of the lexical exponents of gradations with a dialectal origin, namely of: the adjective galanty and the averbs galancie, galancio, galanto in the colloquial Polish ...language and Polish dialects. Based on dialectal and general Polish data coming from published works (dictionaries, atlases, dialectal monographs) and unpublished collections of vocabulary, she discusses their gradational meanings falling into three semantic categories: sufficiency (e.g. galancie osób pojechało (‘quite many’ people have gone)), completeness (e.g. zupa galanta (‘quite a good’ soup)), and intensity (e.g. galancie wąski (a ‘very’ narrow)). The identification of the meanings of the discussed forms as exponents of the intensity of a characteristic is, in most cases, conditioned on the context. They express various values of many gradational characteristics which are extracted while being actualised in a sentence. Due to their limited distribution (mainly Greater Poland, Kuyavia, Łęczyce and Sieradz Land, northern Lesser Poland, Masovia, Chełmno and Dobrzyń Land) and presence in the colloquial Polish language, the discussed forms can be classified as regionalisms with a dialectal origin.
Abstract
The many qere notes in the Aramaic passages of the Hebrew Bible show that the Biblical Aramaic reading tradition goes back to a different variety of Aramaic than the consonantal texts. While ...this qere dialect differs in important respects from every well-attested dialect of Aramaic, it closely resembles a small number of documents from first- and second-century CE Palestine. This suggests that this was the time and place at which the reading tradition was fixed, not just of the Biblical Aramaic portions of the Hebrew Bible, but of the Hebrew Bible in its entirety.

This article is devoted to the life and work of prominent Japanologists Nikolai Alexandrovich Nevsky, Oleg Pletner, and Orestes Viktorovich Pletner. The author traces the contribution of scientists ...to the establishment of scientific relations between the USSR and Japan, examines the major life milestones of scientists in Japan. After receiving an excellent education in Russia, researchers lived in Japan for a long time. They were the founders of new scientific trends, and created a scientific heritage that has not been studied. The Pletner brothers, N. A. Nevsky can be brought into line with such scientists as N. I. Conrad, E. D. Polivanov, S. G. Eliseev, O. O. Rosenberg who were "Golden Age" orientalists of Japanese Studies in St. Petersburg. N. A. Nevsky and O. V. Pletner returned to the USSR. The author considers their fate in Soviet Russia and concludes that political history of the Soviet state in the 1930s made it impossible to strengthen and expand Japanologists School.
Zakon grada Kastva (Kastavski statut) ulazi u skupinu pravnih tekstova, a oni su u hrvatskom srednjovjekovlju i ranom novovjekovlju pisani narodnim jezikom, bez (znatnijega) naslojavanja elemenata ...hrvatskoga crkvenoslavenskoga jezika (Damjanović 2008; Kuzmić 2009, 2011).
