The diocese of Cambrai has recently set up its own heritage service. The missions of this service include the conservation of the written heritage of the diocese, its mobile and built heritage and in ...general the property of the diocesan association or belonging otherwise to the church. The article relates the experience of this service and the interest of its responsibilities in terms of the understanding, the conservation and the interpretation of an extensive but coherent heritage.
The scientific study of any object requires research in documentary sources. Whether these are private or public archives, legacies left to museums or other heritage institutions, the search for ...information is a necessity for understanding the life of the object, from its creation to its study in situ. Today, many types of documentary source are available on line, in particular on the website of the French Ministry of Culture. These sources are available to all and easy to consult. The example presented here, concerning the study of religious furnishings of the 19th and 20th centuries, the production of which increased considerably during these centuries, are the pages taken from the catalogues of several manufacturers of these church furnishings, today accessible on line.
Kanonske vizitacije u Biskupijskom arhivu u Ðakovu čine jednu
manju zbirku, od ukupno 2,5 metara prostora. Do sada je načinjen jedan njihov popis, početkom 20. stoljeća, no taj popis nikad nije ...nigdje objavljen. Bilo je još nekoliko pokušaja evidentiranja i opisivanja stanja kanonskih vizitacija u Biskupijskom arhivu u Ðakovu. Kako do sada nikad nije načinjen cjelovit i točan popis kanonskih vizitacija Biskupijskog arhiva u Ðakovu, a vizitacije su često tražene od istraživača, načinjen je ovaj, osobito za djelatnike i istraživače, kako bi znali s čime mogu raspolagati i što tražiti, ili ne tražiti, u Biskupijskom arhivu u Ðakovu. Prikaz stoga donosi kanonske vizitacije prema župama i mjestima Ðakovačke ili Bosanske i Srijemske biskupije koje se nalaze u Biskupijskom arhivu u Ðakovu. Međutim, važno je napomenuti kako je dio vizitacija nastao u vremenu Srijemske biskupije, dio za vremena Ðakovačke ili Bosanske biskupije, a najveći dio u vrijeme Ðakovačke ili Bosanske i Srijemske biskupije (od 1773. kada su “sjedinjene” Srijemska i Ðakovačka ili Bosanska biskupija). Osim toga, važno je istaknuti kako u prikazu kanonskih vizitacija posebnu poteškoću stvara činjenica da su se kroz povijest mijenjale župe i filijale, sjedišta župa, pa čak i imena mjesta. U tom smislu popis nije konačan, jer je zbirka kanonskih vizitacija još u nastajanju te će je trebati nakon nekog vremena nadopuniti.
Perhaps the most lasting effect of America's bicentennial was to encourage individuals and organizations to think more carefully of preserving and making available their historically valuable ...records. Consistent with this spirit, the American Catholic Church pursued active steps to ensure that its archival records would receive a higher priority than in years past. By 1974, a special committee had prepared and submitted a "Document of Ecclesiastical Archives." It would serve as the cornerstone for Catholic Archives from the mid-1970s onward. Of the many dioceses responding to the need to take better care of the records in their custody, some added support to established archival operations. Others either initiated programs or investigated and implemented alternatives. This study examines the special arrangement between Kent State University and the Diocese of Youngstown, Ohio. Among its purposes is that of providing a model for other public institutions and dioceses that may wish to consider entering a similar arrangement.
The town of Nitra has long been an important historical town and an important episcopal residence. Remarkable music inventories were preserved from the 18th century and the early 19th century, ...although sheet music was preserved only to a smaller extent. From the monastic background, only the Inventarium Chori Nitriensis scholarum Piarum 1749 is preserved. Another centre of the cultural as well as musical life in Nitra was the seat of the bishop, the Nitra Castle, where other significant inventories of sheet music can be found from 1802 and 1814, which are among the largest inventories from this period in the territory of today's Slovakia. These sources are stored in the Diocesan Archive in Nitra and contain registries of music from the 18th and 19th centuries. The study presents the specificities of the records from these inventories, the method of their registration, and their transformation, with an emphasis on the presence of Italian music in them.
Despite the wide popularity of the collection of the same name in the Central State Archive of Moscow, the archive of Moscow Theological Consistory is a unique and understudied phenomenon of the ...cultural heritage of the Russian Orthodox Church. The large documentary complex has for decades served as a breeding ground for research in a wide variety of fi elds of church-historical science. However, for almost two centuries, the formation of the archive itself, in contrast to genealogical research or the compilation of annals of individual churches, was almost out of focus of research attention. Meanwhile, the analysis of a wide range of documentary materials provides a much more accurate picture of the peculiarities of building an archive than the consideration of any private aspects of its functioning related to a particular group of documents. The establishment of the Consistory Archive in the fi rst half of the 18th century is seen as one of the least known events in its almost two-hundredyear existence. The reason for the emergence of many documents from its predecessor institutions and their future fate remains unknown. The 44th chapter of the General Regulations marked the beginning of the rapid growth of systematic archival work in the Russian Empire. The development of secular archives is much better aff ected in this respect than church archives. The documents in the MDK collection, despite their loss, provide an opportunity to study this process in detail in a church context. One of the most popular documentary complexes of its time is being developed in the consistory. The article, based on published and unpublished sources, attempts to reconstruct the early composition of documents, the infl uence of predecessor institutions on the grouping of material, the perception of the archive by the Consistorians, and the work of employees with the archive until the creation of the permanent position of archivist in 1749.
Diocesan archives in Przemyśl and Płock are one of the oldest institutional diocesan archives in Poland. The archives were established in 1927 and 1928, respectively. This article is intended to make ...a comparative analysis of the archives’ statutes. The archive in Przemyśl came into being as a current archive of the episcopal curia and a historical archive, whereas the archive in Płock only as a historical one. The statutes regulate the basis of the archives’ operations. They define their institutional separateness, identify their objectives and resources. The statutes also formulate basic principles whereby records are received. They also establish tasks and responsibilities of the director and other employees and provide general rules of making archive material available. In terms of content, the statutes cover the same topics, but they differ in detailed solutions. The differences arise from the specific functions of the respective archives in the dioceses.
The article sheds light on the significant fundraising and relief activities for Ireland during the Great Famine (1845–50) initiated in 1847 by the Italian philosopher and cleric Antonio Rosmini and ...his network in Savoy-Piedmont, Lombardy-Venetia and England. By analysing Rosmini's philosophical and political writings, the article demonstrates that Rosmini considered aid in times of crisis as an act of social justice for which individuals have to take responsibility. By analysing documents from the Italian and Irish archives, the article gives an account of the fundraising effort's practices of networking, appealing, almsgiving and delivery.
