This study explored multitasking among elderly drivers, whose cognitive function declines with age. Experiment 1 demonstrated that elderly drivers struggled more with simultaneous calculation and ...driving tasks compared to younger drivers. Experiment 2 analyzed individuals unaffected by multitasking and found that the elderly drivers in this group experienced more mind-wandering when driving alone. The findings highlight the unique challenges faced by elderly drivers in managing multitasking situations, providing insights into their cognitive demands and performance.
The article presents the features of interaction between a volunteer and an elderly person in the process of providing institutional social assistance. The theoretical aspects of an elderly person in ...an institution and the possibilities of interaction between a volunteer and an elderly person in institutional care are considered. 3 volunteers and 7 elderly persons were interviewed. Challenges and directions for improvement of the interaction of volunteers with the elderly are revealed.

•Estimates potential fuel poverty households in Japan during summer.•5.53% poverty households were classified as fuel poverty households.•Fuel poverty households are more vulnerable ...against fuel poverty.•Energy amount rate and total floor area affect elderly couple households.
The term fuel poverty is used to describe households that cannot afford the fuel costs of heating during winters. Fuel poverty is estimated on the basis of European criteria given that winters tend to be severe in Europe. However, it would be inappropriate to apply the same criteria to Asian regions with severe heat levels. Considering fuel poverty in the context of cooling expenses incurred during summers is also necessary. Thus, this study aims to examine potential fuel poverty households in Japan during summer and their occurrence condition using microdata. The estimation results reveal that only 0.93% of the surveyed households report fuel poverty. However, 5.53% poverty households can be classified as fuel poverty households. The results further show that households with elderly couples, particularly those living in old and/or large-floored homes with old room air conditioners, and single parent households are more vulnerable to fuel poverty. This study also conducts a binomial logistic regression analysis to clarify the occurrence condition for fuel poverty households. The findings suggest that elderly households easily fall into fuel poverty because of their low annual income and increased electricity expenditures owing to a rise in the energy amount rate.
In order to collect fundamental data for preventing accidents caused by pedal misapplication of the elderly drivers, we measure the pedal operation in actual driving scenes on the same vehicle. We ...use motion capture system and on-dash cams, and analyze the foot movement and the heel position, in the various driving scenes such as stopped, backed up and parked. The heel fixation group showed a greater distance from the center of the brake pedal and a smaller foot travel distance compared to the heel shift group.
A 93-year-old man receiving follow-up care for hypertension and a thoracic aorta aneurysm experienced suddenprecordial and back pain. He requested an ambulance and was taken to our hospital. We ...checked his thoracic aortawith computed tomography and diagnosed him with an 84 mm maximum minor-axis diameter arch thoracic aorticaneurysm (TAA) with imminent rupture and pleural effusion. After undergoing 2-debranch TEVAR emergencysurgery, the patient made an uneventful recovery without postoperative complications and left the hospital on hisown on POD 35. This case is being reported because it describes the successful treatment of TAA with an emergency stent graft for a patient of advanced age.
In this study, we focused on environmental factors to analyze the suicide problem. A questionnaire survey was conducted targeting people aged 60 and over living in Akita Prefecture. Respondents with ...a loneliness score of 44 points or higher and a depression score of 10 points or higher were defined as potential suicidal ideation groups and analyzed. From the results of the logistic regression analysis, it became clear that the awareness of the living environment is an effective factor for those who are likely to have suicidal ideation.
We proposed a method to evaluate the degree of safe driving based on a cognitive test utilizing the Trail Making Test-J Part B (TMT-J) and a minimum TTC using a driving simulator. We also proposed a ...training program to acquire compensatory behavior through metacognition. The effectiveness of these methods was tested on 30 elderly drivers. It was confirmed that a combination of TMT-J and driving ability was effective in judging safe driving. In addition, the use of charts comparing driving ability with others and a bird's-eye view of driving improved metacognitive abilities and realized compensatory behaviors for safe driving.
