The purpose of this study was to clarify difference in heating effect of the two types of bathing for the elderly, footbathing at 44°C and full bathing at 40°C. The subjects of this study were nine ...elderly persons for footbathing (average 73.5 years old) and 10 elderly persons for full bathing (average 77.4 years old). The tympanic temperature was measured using a thermistor, sweat rate using the ventral capsule method, and blood pressure and heart rate using an autonomic spygmomanometer during control period 10 minutes before bathing, for 20 minutes during bathing, and for 10 minutes after bathing. Subjects wore plain clothes while taking a footbath time or swimming trunks while taking a full bathing. The ambient temperature was set to 20°C during the footbath or 26°C during the full bathing. During the footbath, the tympanic temperature increased to 60% that of full bathing and a significant increase of sweat rate was observed. In contrast, during full bathing, a significant rise in systolic blood pressure was observed immediately after bathing started due to hydrostatic pressure and a significant drop of diastolic pressure was observed after bathing due to heating during bathing. These findings suggest that the footbath is safe, does not cause any change in blood pressure and is expected to provide mild warming for the elderly.
In this paper, we propose a method to analyze berg balance scale (BBS) for elderly persons using convolutional neural network (CNN). One of the main problem for elderly people is that their health is ...easily get deteriorated after a fall. The proposed CNN model predicts the BBS score of the elderly using sensors that can measure the motion pattern while performing activities of BBS. We developed two CNN models - one dimensional and two dimensional - to predict the score of BBS activities. The models predict the score between 0 to 4 with the accuracy of 90%. The proposed CNN models can be used to evaluate fall risk for elderly persons.

Maintenance and improvement of masticatory function in nursing care elderly persons (NC) is an important issue, and it is speculated that sarcopenia is related to declining masticatory function. The ...decrease in skeletal muscle index(SMI), a major diagnostic criterion for sarcopenia, has been reported to be associated with swallowing function in NC.However, the relationship between SMI and masticatory function is unknown. Therefore,we investigated the relationship between masseter muscle thickness(MMT)and SMI, with the aim of examining the specific relationship between decreased masticatory function and sarcopenia in NC. MMT and SMI were measured by ultrasonography and bioelectrical impedance analysis in 275 NC participants in Omori Town, Yokote City, Akita Prefecture in the Tohoku region in Japan. Cognitive functions measured from all participants using questionnaire. Participants were classified into low-MMT or high-MMT group based on the median of each of MMT, and SMI and related items in each gender. In addition, to examine the factors related to MMT, logistic regression analysis was conducted by entering age,sex, SMI, nutrition status, severity of dementia, and other items as explanatory variables and MMT as objective variable. SMI in high-MMT group were significantly higher than low-MMT group(high-MMT: 4.8±1.4 kg/m2, low-MMT: 4.4±1.4 kg/m2, P=0.010).Furthermore, logistic regression analysis indicated that SMI were significantly associated with a MMT(Odds Ratio=0.83, 95% Confidence Interval=0.69-0.99, P=0.049). Our result suggested that the mass of the masseter muscles decreased with NC due to sarcopenia, possibly contributing to a decrease in masticatory function.
Reflecting the rapidly aging population, community-based interventions in the form of physical exercise have been introduced to promote the health of elderly persons. Many investigation studies have ...focused on muscle strength in the lower leg as a potent indicator of the effect of physical exercises. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of long-term daily exercises on neural command in lower leg muscle activations. Twenty-six community-based elderly persons (13 men and 13 women; 69.8 ± 0.5 years old) participated in this study. Daily exercise was comprised of walking for more than 30 min, stretching, muscle strengthening and balance exercise, and was continued for three months. Muscle strength and surface electromyography of the tibia anterior, rectus femoris, and biceps femoris were measured in maximum isometric voluntary contraction both before and after the intervention. The mean frequency of the firing of motor units was calculated based on fast Fourier transformation of the electromyography. As the results of the intervention, muscle strength increased significantly only in biceps femoris, whereas the mean frequency of motor units decreased significantly in every muscle, indicating that motor unit firing in lower frequency efficiently induces the same or greater strength compared with before the intervention. Thus, synchronization of motor units compensates for the lower frequency of motor unit firing to maintain muscular strength. In conclusion, long-term physical exercises in the elderly can modulate the neural adjustment of lower leg muscles to promote efficient output of muscle strength.
