The aim of this study was to determine the effects of the essential oil of Thymus serpyllum L. and of its components thymol and total phenols (total phenolic content, TPC) extracted from the plant on ...the growth and mycotoxin production of Aspergillus ochraceus, A. carbonarius, and A. niger. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) determined for the essential oil and thymol, and selected concentration of the TPC extract inhibited fungal growth and ochratoxin A biosynthesis by more than 60 %, depending on the conditions and duration of incubation with the fungi. Cilj ovog rada bio je odrediti utjecaj eteričnog ulja majčine dušice (Thymus serpyllum), uljne komponente timola i ukupnih fenola ekstrahiranih iz biljke, na rast plijesni i sintezu mikotoksina. U odabranim uvjetima minimalna inhibitorna koncentracija (MIC) eteričnog ulja i timola, koja je određena u ovom radu, i koncentracija ukupnih fenola (TPC) inhibirale su više od 60 % rasta odabranih plijesni i biosinteze okratoksina A. Njihova inhibitorna učinkovitost ovisila je o uvjetima i trajanju inkubacije s plijesnima. U odnosu na timol i ekstrakt eterično ulje pokazalo je snažniji inhibitorni utjecaj, koji je uvjetovan sinergističkim ili kumulativnim djelovanjem uljnih komponenata.

Heracleum lasiopetalum Boiss, Kelussia odoratissima Mozaff., and Echinophora platyloba DC. belong the Apiaceae family. They are Iranian endemic plants. These three herbs have been used as food ...additives in traditional preparations such as pickles. Antioxidant activity (AA) of methanol extracts (ME) of the plants was evaluated by three assays, including DPPH, FRAP, and TEAC. From all three assays, comparing all the MEs for their IC50 and EC1 values, E. platyloba had the highest AA. Total phenolic content (TPC) of the extracts ranged from 74 to 120 mg TAE/g. The extract of H. lasiopetalum exhibited the highest TPC. The flavonoids content (FC) of the extracts ranged from 7.63 to 14.52 mg RE/g, from which the extract of E. platyloba had the highest flavonoids concentration. A positive correlation between the FC and AA in DPPH assay was found. A significant correlation was also found between the TPC and AA in FRAP assay. These results suggested that the level of AA in these plants varied in a great extent. Our results indicated that extract of E. platyloba could be an important dietary source of flavonoids compounds with high antioxidant capacity. In addition, E. platyloba can be used as an alternative preservative and natural flavor instead of synthetic ones in food industry (especially pickles)
Heracleum lasiopetalum Boiss., Kelussia odoratissima Mozaff. i Echinophora platyloba DC. należą do rodziny Apiaceae. Są to irańskie rośliny endemiczne. Tych trzech ziół używa się jako dodatków do tradycyjnych produktów, takich jak marynaty. Działanie przeciwutleniające wyciągu metanolowego z tych roślin zostało zbadane trzema metodami: DPPH, FRAP i TEAC. Z trzech badań, podczas których porównano wartości IC50 i EC1 dla wyciągów metanolowych, największe działanie przeciwutleniające wykazano dla E. platyloba. Całkowita zawartość związków fenolowych (TPC) w ekstraktach wynosiła od 74 do 120 mg TAE/g. Największą zawartość TPC wykazano dla wyciągu z H. lasiopetalum. Zawartość flawonoidów (FC) w wyciągach wynosiła od 7.63 do 14.52 mg RE/g; największe stężenie flawonoidów odnotowano dla wyciągu z E. platyloba. W teście DPPH znaleziono dodatnią korelację pomiędzy zawartością flawonoidów a aktywnością antyoksydacyjną. W teście FRAP znaleziono istotną korelację między całkowitą zawartością związków fenolowych a aktywnością antyoksydacyjną. Te wyniki sugerują, że aktywność antyoksydacyjna w tych roślinach bardzo się różni. Nasze wyniki pokazały, że wyciąg z E. platyloba może być ważnym źródłem flawonoidów w diecie, działających silnie przeciwutleniająco. Co więcej, E. platyloba można stosować jako alternatywny, naturalny dodatek smakowy i konserwujący, zamiast dodatków syntetycznych (szczególnie w marynatach)
Celem badań było znalezienie związku pomiędzy całkowitą zawartością fenoli i flawonoidów w miodzie oraz jego zdolnością dezaktywacji rodnika DPPH a jego pochodzeniem botanicznym. W badaniach ...uwzględniono cztery odmiany miodu (kasztanowy, eukaliptusowy, wrzosowy i jeżynowy) oraz miód wielokwiatowy. W miodach tych stwierdzono obecność pyłku pochodzącego z 96 gatunków roślin należących do 50 rodzin. Nie mniej jednak dla produkcji miodu na tym terenie znaczenie miało jedynie kilka gatunków roślin. W badanych miodach w największych ilościach występował pyłek: Castanea sativa, Rubus, Eucalyptus oraz gatunków rodzaju Erica. Inne rodzaje pyłku miały niewielkie znaczenie: Echium, Brassica, Trifolium, Campanulla, Crateagus monogyna, Salix, Frangula alnus, Conium maculatum.
At present, major causes of diseases is oxidative stress affecting both metabolic and physiological functions of the body. That is why there is a great need for investigation of nutritious food ...supplements for counteracting these oxidative stresses. Therefore, the aim of study was to evaluate the therapeutic potential of Apium leptophyllum Pers. fruits by estimating total phenolic as well as flavonoidal contents and antioxidant values. The collected fruits were extracted separately using different solvents like methanol, ethanol and water. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were measured from the respective extracts and correlated with their antioxidant values. The antioxidant properties of various fruit extracts (12.5, 25, 50, 100 and 150 μg/ml) were evaluated by DPPH, hydroxyl, nitric oxide and superoxide scavenging assay and compared with ascorbic acid as a standard. All the extracts of A. leptophyllum were found to be dose dependent inhibition against these free radicals. Among all these extracts, the methanolic one was found better in the scavenging activity and followed dose-dependent manner against DPPH, hydroxyl radical, nitric oxide, superoxide anions with minimum IC50 values of 97.9, 89.02, 135.37, 127.73 μg/ml, respectively, and also observed more significant (p<0.01) as compared with standard Furthermore, total phenolic and flavonoidal contents were found highest in methanolic extract. The results obtained in this study clearly indicate that the methanolic extract of A. leptophyllum may be used as a new potential source of natural nutritional supplement in food or pharmaceutical industries due to rich source of phenolic, flavonoidal contents as well as antioxidant property
Obecnie główną przyczyną chorób jest stres oksydacyjny wpływający zarówno na metabolizm, jak i funkcje fizjologiczne organizmu. Dlatego istnieje duża potrzeba poszukiwania produktów uzupełniających dietę, które przeciwdziałają stresowi oksydacyjnemu. Celem niniejszej pracy było określenie potencjału terapeutycznego owoców Apium leptophyllum Pers. poprzez określenie całkowitej zawartości fenoli i flawonoidów oraz ich aktywności antyoksydacyjnej. Nasiona ekstrahowano oddzielnie, używając różnych rozpuszczalników, takich jak metanol, etanol i woda. Zmierzono całkowitą zawartość fenoli i flawonoidów w poszczególnych wyciągach i skorelowano ją z ich aktywnością antyoksydacyjną. Właściwości antyoksydacyjne różnych wyciągów z owoców (w stężeniach 12,5, 25, 50, 100 i 150 μg/ml) zmierzono za pomocą metod przy użyciu DPPH, rodników hydroksylowych, tlenku azotu, nadtlenku i porównano z właściwościami kwasu askorbowego. Stwierdzono, że działanie inhibicyjne wszystkich wyciągów z A. leptophyllum przeciwko wolnym rodnikom zależało od zastosowanej dawki. Ponadto całkowita zawartość związków fenolowych i flawonoidów była najwyższa w wyciągu metanolowym. Wyniki tych badań wyraźnie wskazują, że wyciąg metanolowy z A. leptophyllum może być używany jako potencjalne nowe źródło naturalnych suplementów diety dla przemysłu spożywczego lub farmaceutycznego dzięki wysokiej zawartości fenoli, flawonoidów i właściwościom antyoksydacyjnym
Epimedium pinnatum (Berberidaceae family) is used as an aphrodisiac in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of E. ...pinnatum extracts (ethanol, methanol and aqueous extracts). Total phenolic (TPC) and flavonoid contents (TFC) of each extract were assessed by spectrophotometric methods. It was exhibited that methanol extract had better antimicrobial activity than those of ethanolic extract or aqueous extract. The TPC and TFC of E. pinnatum extracts was higher in methanol extract (149 and 36.6 mg/g) than that of ethanolic extract (137.2 and 19.5 mg/g) and aqueous extract (86.2 and 8.4 mg/g). The methanol extract had lower IC50 value (200 µg/ml) than ethanolic (250 µg/ml) and aqueous extract (400 µg/ml). There was a positive correlation between TPC, TFC in E. pinnatum extract and their antioxidant and antimicrobial activity
W tradycyjnej medycynie chińskiej Epimedium pinnatum (rodzina Berberidaceae) używa się jako afrodyzjaku. Celem niniejszej pracy była ocena działania przeciwbakteryjnego i prze ciwutleniającego wyciągów: etanolowego, metanolowego i wodnego z Epimedium pinnatum. Całkowita zawartość fenoli i całkowita zawartość flawonoidów w każdym z wyciągów została oznaczona metodami spektrofotometrycznymi. Wykazano, że wyciąg metanolowy miał lepsze działanie przeciwbakteryjne niż wyciąg etanolowy i wodny. Całkowita zawartość fenoli i całkowita zawartość flawonoidów była wyższa w wyciągu metanolowym (149 i 36,6 mg/g) niż etanolowym (137,2 i 19,5 mg/g) i wodnym (86,2 i 8,4 mg/g). Wyciąg metanolowy miał niższą wartość IC50 (200 µg/ml) niż wyciąg etanolowy (250 µg/ml) i wodny (400 µg/ml). Zauważono pozytywną korelację między całkowitym stężeniem fenoli i całkowitym stężeniem flawonoidów w wyciągach z E. pinnatum, a ich działaniem przeciwutleniającym i przeciwbakteryjnym.

Plodovi grejpfruta značajno se ističu bogatim nutritivnim sastavom, posebice sadržajem vitamina C, polifenolnih spojeva i snažnom antioksidacijskom aktivnosti. Sastav i sadržaj fitokemikalija uvelike ...ovisi o genetskim svojstvima vrste odnosno sorte. Stoga je i cilj ovog istraživanja bio utvrditi fizikalno-kemijska svojstva, sadržaj bioatkivnih spojeva i antioksidacijski potencijal plodova grejpfruta dviju različitih sorti: 'Marsh Seedless' i 'Natzumikan'. Obje sorte grejpfruta ubrane su u nasadu agruma na području Opuzena. Istraživane sorte ne razlikuju se značajno u sadržaju ukupne suhe tvari (prosječna utvrđena vrijednost 11,55%), topljive suhe tvari (prosječna utvrđena vrijednost 9,89%) kao ni u sadržaju vitamina C (prosječna utvrđena vrijednost 42,92 mg/100 g svježe tvari). No, značajnije razlike utvrđene su u sadržaju polifenolnih spojeva prilikom čega su kod sorte 'Natzumikan' utvrđene čak 66% više vrijednosti ukupnih fenola, 76% više ukupnih flavonoida i 54% više ukupnih neflavonoida u usporedbi sa sortom 'Marsh Seedless'. Također, sorta 'Natzumikan' imala je i značajnije veći antikodiacijski kapacitet (1,68 mmol TE/L). Temeljem svega može se zaključiti kako su plodovi grejpfruta značajan izvor vrijednih fitokemikalija, značajnih za ljudsko zdravlje.
Voda u zrnu (KW) i ukupni topivi šećeri (TSS) su glavne komponente okusa kukuruza šećerca, dok ukupni karotenoidi (TC), ukupni fenoli (TP) i antioksidacijska aktivnost (AA) doprinose njegovim ...zdravstvenim benefitima. Glavni cilj bio je utvrditi utjecaj genotipa, rokova berbe i godine na kemijske komponenete kvalitete zrna shrunken (sh2) kukuruza šećerca. Devet sh2 genotipova brano je u trodnevnim intervalima od 20. do 32. dana nakon oplodnje (DAP) kroz dvije
godine. Vegetacijska sezona značajno je utjecala samo na TC i TP. Utvrđene su značajne razlike između genotipova za KW (75.3 - 77.4%), TTS (282.4 - 343.2 mg/g), TC (9.3 - 15.7 µg/g), TP (243.6 - 289.4 mg GEA/100 g) i AA (74.6 - 83.6% inhibicije). Utjecaj roka berbe i interakcije genotipa s rokom berbe, bio je značajan za sva svojstva. U odnosu na 20. DAP, KW i TSS su se smanjili, dok su TC, TP i AA imali tendenciju porasta u kasnijim rokovima berbe. Na osnovu KW, genotipovi OS 5Esh i Overland su produžili rokove berbe do 29. DAP. Nasuprot tome, optimalni rok berbe za genotip OS 244sh završio je na 20. DAP. Produženi period berbe za genotip Overland rezultirao je značajnim povećanjem TC (62.8%), TP (12.1%) i AA (12.4%).
