A new and brilliant diplomatic edition of »Kortt wendingh« appeared in 2013, following MS AM 808, 4°. The editor was †Leif Stedstrup. The edition contains a so-called »school comedy« written by Hans ...Christensen Sthen in c. 1570. Sthen was born in 1544 and grew up in Roskilde. His hymns, some of which are still sung, are well known, but his language is not particularly well researched. I have tried to extract all of the interesting pronunciations and a few of the grammatical features that occur in »Kortt wendingh«. It has not proven to be an easy task because Danish orthography in the sixteenth century was somewhat complex and can be difficult for us to evaluate today. But as all alphabetical writing encapsulates the pronunciation of its time, I think that such a linguistic investigation can be undertaken and provide information about late sixteenth-century Danish pronunciation on Sjælland. (Incidentally, »Kortt wendingh« is both the name of the main character (cf. the English name Curt) and a phrase in Danish meaning a ‘sharp vicissitude’ (concerning one’s fate), which is, indeed, the topic of the play).

Many today do not recognize the word, but "philology" was for centuries nearly synonymous with humanistic intellectual life, encompassing not only the study of Greek and Roman literature and the ...Bible but also all other studies of language and literature, as well as religion, history, culture, art, archaeology, and more.In short, philology was the queen of the human sciences. How did it become little more than an archaic word? In Philology, the first history of Western humanistic learning as a connected whole ever published in English,James Turner tells the fascinating, forgotten story of how the study of languages and texts led to the modern humanities and the modern university.
This compelling narrativetraces the development of humanistic learning from its beginning among ancient Greek scholars and rhetoricians, through the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Enlightenment, to the English-speaking world of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Turner shows how evolving researches into the texts, languages, and physical artifacts of the past led, over many centuries, to sophisticated comparative methods and a deep historical awareness of the uniqueness of earlier ages. But around 1800, he explains, these interlinked philological and antiquarian studies began to fragment into distinct academic fields. These fissures resulted, within a century or so, in the new, independent "disciplines" that we now call the humanities. Yet the separation of these disciplines only obscured, rather than erased, their common features.
The humanities today face a crisis of relevance, if not of meaning and purpose. Understanding their common origins-and what they still share-has never been more urgent.

Modern languages like English, Spanish, Russian and Hindi as well as ancient languages like Greek, Latin and Sanskrit all belong to the Indo-European language family, which means that they all ...descend from a common ancestor. But how, more precisely, are the Indo-European languages related to each other? This book brings together pioneering research from a team of international scholars to address this fundamental question. It provides an introduction to linguistic subgrouping as well as offering comprehensive, systematic and up-to-date analyses of the ten main branches of the Indo-European language family: Anatolian, Tocharian, Italic, Celtic, Germanic, Greek, Armenian, Albanian, Indo-Iranian and Balto-Slavic. By highlighting that these branches are saliently different from each other, yet at the same time display striking similarities, the book demonstrates the early diversification of the Indo-European language family, spoken today by half the world's population. This title is also available as open access on Cambridge Core.
