The Garland Handbook of African Music is comprised of essays from The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music: Volume 1, Africa, (1997). Revised and updated, the essays offer detailed, regional studies ...of the different musical cultures of Africa and examine the ways in which music helps to define the identity of this particular area.
Part One provides an in-depth introduction to Africa. Part Two focuses on issues and processes, such as notation and oral tradition, dance in communal life, and intellectual property. Part Three focuses on the different regions, countries, and cultures of Africa with selected regional case studies.
The second edition has been expanded to include exciting new scholarship that has been conducted since the first edition was published. Questions for Critical Thinking at the end of each major section guide and focus attention on what musical and cultural issues arise when one studies the music of Africa-issues that might not occur in the study of other musics of the world. An accompanying audio compact disc offers musical examples of some of the music of Africa.
The natural environment and geographical environment provide the possibility for human survival and development and are also the premise of the formation of music culture. When studying the style ...characteristics and cultural types of music, more comprehensive and correct conclusions can be drawn only when considering various regional factors such as geography and topographic environment. If we want to explore the music of Xinjiang, we must understand the regional culture. The special geographical location of the Silk Road gives Xinjiang a foreign style compatible with Chinese and Western cultures. At the same time, because of the geographical environment of the Gobi Desert, the music style of Xinjiang is unique. This paper explores the relationship between the traditional music of Xinjiang and the Gobi desert, through the investigation and study of Xinjiang and various musical styles, which have certain reference significance for the study of the Chinese traditional culture.
Human music life can be traced back to ancient times. The music art of human society is rich and colorful, which makes the music classification unable to classify efficiently and accurately. ...Moreover, the classification has become a daunting task. On this basis, this paper studies the method of deep learning for processing music classification. Not only is the design structure of music signal channel classified, but also all connected neural networks associated with the music are investigated to design an appropriate network model. According to different music sequence measurements, the feature sequence mechanism of music design feedback optimization is also investigated. The type probabilities of different calculated orbits are measured by softmax activation function, and the function value of cross loss is obtained. Finally, an Adam optimization algorithm is used as the optimization algorithm of the proposed network model. Subsequently, an independent adaptive learning planning rate is designed. By adjusting the network parameters, the first- and second-order estimates of the calculated gradient are classified. The experimental outcomes prove that the anticipated method can meritoriously increase the correctness of music classification and is helpful for music channel classification. Moreover, we also observed that the number of neurons in the network has also a significant impact over the training and testing errors.
This article studies the interrelationships between folk literature and written literature. The author describes some of the methods that have been used to identify and interpret the presence of folk ...literature in an author’s work. In this context, the interest that the writer Josep Carner had in popular literature is analyzed. Subsequently, the nine poems that he published in 1904 under the title “Glosas” are discussed. The poems are inspired by well-known folk songs that are used to accompany children’s games. Starting with the first verses of these songs, Carner creates poems where the features of folk literature are combined with those of written literature. Keywords: literature, poetry, folk, folklore, song, game, Josep Carner
Chinese Tujia folk songs, deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of the Tujia ethnic group, serve as a living repository of history, values, and traditions. The primary objective of this study is to ...investigate the historical development of education and cultural literacy in Chinese Tujia working songs in Chongqing. The comprehensive literature review provides insights into the history of the Tujia ethnic group, their musical heritage, and contemporary challenges to preserving their cultural traditions. The research site includes Youyang Tujia and Miao Autonomous County, Shizhu Tujia Autonomous County, Pengshui Tujia, and Miao Autonomous County, and Qianjiang District. Key informants, including accomplished artists, academic researchers, and local experts, share their invaluable insights related to the preservation and performance of Tujia folk songs. By using the principles of music aesthetics, music ethnology, and ancient Chinese music history. The result of this study underscores the critical importance of preserving intangible cultural heritage, especially in the context of today’s rapid modernization and globalization. They highlight those traditional folk songs, like Chinese Tujia working songs, hold immense cultural and historical value. The study also provides actionable recommendations for ensuring the continued vitality of these culturally rich songs. These suggestions can guide efforts to integrate Tujia folk songs into educational curricula, support local musicians and artists, and promote cultural events.

This article deals with a folk song known as 'The Life of a Sailor' existing in Portuguese and Brazilian oral tradition. In this song, a sailor complains about the trials of his life on board, mainly ...the fatiguing tasks he has to perform, for low pay. Although it has been collected in some inland areas, it seems this song was used mainly as a shanty. It was included also in a danced theatrical play about maritime subjects, performed by sailors or fishermen, which is now lost in Portugal but continues in Brazil. This article studies the relationships of this song with three other songs: 'The Life of a Nun', 'The Life of a Friar', and 'The Life of a Student'. It also shows the view of life at sea which 'The Life of a Sailor' conveys, far removed from the epic tone usually connected with navigation in the Portuguese imaginary.
Through his Novelle d’Annunzio offers his readers important examples of popular musical traditions from his native land; it is a profane, paraliturgic and extraliturgic music. It is a music of oral ...tradition that, by its very nature, is always liable to be altered, and was listened to but also practised by the poet in his youth; he manipulated it, partly transformed it and then fixed it, according to an exotic interpretation, in the abstract time of a myth. At a time when, in Italy, ethno-phonic studies were virtually non-existent, d'Annunzio manages to safeguard an important musical heritage by crystallising it in his literary work. In the Novelle music is immersed in an architectural and natural landscape that is already rich in diffused sounds and both vocal and instrumental performance, with their specific techniques, are expertly outlined.

During August 1-2, the "Kansas State Musical Jubilee" was held at Bismarck Grove, a two-day program with four concerts in which all choruses joined together in a choir of 1,800 sopranos, 1,600 altos, ...1,200 tenors, and 1,400 basses.1 This extraordinary event in the Wild West of Dodge City was part of significant musical currents in nineteenth-century United Kingdom and the United States. Choirs and musical societies sprang up in towns, music conventions, normal schools, festivals, and concerts; the "Village Choir" was often an active part of social fabric. Publishing houses produced more printed music, aided by advances in production technology, economic conditions that made production cheaper, and improved marketing and distribution practices. Table 1 on page 32 supplies a dozen part-song composers, a tiny sample as a starting point into discovering those who blazed a trail for composers of today.
In today’s globally interconnected society, the scope of musics from diverse cultural traditions has grown to embrace many different styles of music, including original/traditional versions and ...transformed versions (e.g., Western arrangements for ensemble versions of culturally diverse musics and contemporary folk music). To properly educate students about different styles of culturally diverse musics, it is important for teachers to understand each style and gain specific instructional strategies before being able to teach them in a respectful way. In this article, I provide teachers with several steps to prepare to teach culturally diverse musics (i.e., research, resources, evaluation, and partners). Furthermore, I suggest essential considerations for teaching transformed versions with integrity.
