Paris mushroomed in the thirteenth century to become the largest city in the Western world, largely through in-migration from rural areas. The resulting dialect-mixture led to the formation of new, ...specifically urban modes of speech. From the time of the Renaissance social stratification became sharper as the elites distanced themselves from the Parisian 'Cockney' of the masses. Nineteenth-century urbanisation transformed the situation yet again with the arrival of huge numbers of immigrants from far-flung corners of France, levelling dialect-differences and exposing ever larger sections of the population to standardising influences. At the same time, a working-class vernacular emerged which was distinguished from the upper-class standard not only in grammar and pronunciation but most markedly in vocabulary (slang). This book examines the interlinked history of Parisian speech and the Parisian population through these various phases of in-migration, dialect-mixing and social stratification from medieval times to the present day.
The decades between 1670 and 1730 were the most formative in the history of the French colonies in the Americas. A sufficient number of migrants arrived from France and Africa to create settlements, ...establish economies of production, develop networks of exchange and trade, and adapt institutions of government and law to give substance and form to their resulting societies. Elusive Empire was the first full account of how during these years French settlers came to the Americas. It examines how they and thousands of African slaves together with Amerindians constructed settlements and produced and traded commodities for export. Bringing together much evidence, the author explores how the newly constructed societies and new economies, without precedent in France, interacted with the growing international violence in the Atlantic world in order to present a fresh perspective of the multifarious French colonizing experience in the Americas.

Histories of artists' personal possessions shed new light
on the lives of their owners. Artists are makers of
things. Yet it is a measure of the disembodied manner in which we
generally think about ...artists that we rarely consider the everyday
items they own. This innovative book looks at objects that once
belonged to artists, revealing not only the fabric of the
eighteenth-century art world in France but also unfamiliar-and
sometimes unexpected-insights into the individuals who populated
it, including Jean-Antoine Watteau, François Boucher, Jean-Baptiste
Greuze, and Elisabeth Vigée-LeBrun. From the curious to the
mundane, from the useful to the symbolic, these items have one
thing in common: they have all been eclipsed from historical view.
Some of the objects still exist, like Jean-Honoré Fragonard's color
box and Jacques-Louis David's table. Others survive only in
paintings, such as Jean-Siméon Chardin's cistern in his Copper
Drinking Fountain , or in documents, like François Lemoyne's
sword, the instrument of his suicide. Several were literally lost,
including pastelist Jean-Baptiste Perronneau's pencil case. In this
fascinating book, the authors engage with fundamental historical
debates about production, consumption, and sociability through the
lens of material goods owned by artists. The free online edition of
this open-access publication is at
www.getty.edu/publications/artists-things/ and includes zoomable
illustrations. Free PDF and EPUB downloads of the book are also
available.
The importance of studying phraseology in general, and paremiology in particular, is justified by the fact that researchers on the subject have shown that PUs are the cornerstone of the lexicon and ...the cultural heritage of any language. The book provides a comparative study of paremias in Spanish and French, in lexicography, syntax, and translation.
