Although soil contamination must be remediated by the polluters under current legal frameworks in numerous countries, the allocation of responsibilities for soil clean-up is still challenging in the ...case of multiple potentially responsible parties (PRPs). This study evaluated the individual contributions of two PRPs (Owners A & B) to heavy metal contamination in the soil environment near an abandoned smelter and compared the results with those from the conventional Gore Factor (GF) method. The soil in the study area was widely contaminated by various heavy metals. In particular, the arsenic concentration exceeded the local regulatory level of 25 mg kg−1 at all investigated sites. Arsenic components were frequently observed in the form of iron oxides, and they decreased with increasing distance from the smelter chimney. This distribution supported the premise that the arsenic mainly originated from the chimney through oxidation processes of iron-containing ores under high temperature. The GF results attributed greater responsibility to Owner A than Owner B, while the estimated arsenic masses (based on the field investigation) indicated the contrary. These results could be caused by insufficient information for the GF evaluation, because the change in smelter ownership and long history of contamination obscure important data, such as the amount of total refined ores and the efficiency of air pollution prevention facilities in the smelter. Therefore, more field-based approaches must be considered more importantly for the evaluation of multiple PRPs' remediation responsibilities, especially in areas with long-term contamination.

We evaluated mercury (Hg) behavior in a full-scale sewage sludge torrefaction plant with a capacity of 150 wet tons/day, which operates under a nitrogen atmosphere at a temperature range of ...250–350 °C. Thermodynamic calculations and monitoring results show that elemental Hg (Hg0) was the dominant species in both the pyrolysis gas during the torrefaction stage and in the flue gas from downstream air pollution control devices. A wet scrubber (WS) effectively removed oxidized Hg from the flue gas and moved Hg to wastewater, and an electrostatic precipitator (ESP) removed significant particulate-bound Hg but showed a limited capacity for overall Hg removal. Hg bound to total suspended solids had a much higher concentration than that of dissolved Hg in wastewater. Total suspended solid removal from wastewater is therefore recommended to reduce Hg discharge. Existing air pollution control devices, which consist of a cyclone, WS, and ESP, are not sufficient for Hg removal due to the poor Hg0 removal performance of the WS and ESP; a further Hg0 removal unit is necessary. A commercial packed tower with sorbent polymer catalyst composite material was effective in removing Hg (83.3%) during sludge torrefaction.

Background
The GCA is a well performing device in terms of efficacy despite complex anatomies (aortic rim <5 mm and ASD diameter >17 mm) with a good safety profile.
Aims
To evaluate atrial septal ...defect (ASD) features impacting on right disc device thrombosis in patients who underwent Gore Cardioform ASD Occluder (GCA) implantation.
Methods
A total of 44 consecutive patients undergoing percutaneous ASD with GCA device from January 2020 to September 2022 at our tertiary care Center were evaluated. The minimum follow‐up was 6 months.
Results
The patients were stratified in two groups according to a cut‐off value of ASD diameter equal to 20 mm at sizing balloon, derived from ROC analysis (AUC = 0.894; p = 0.024). Baseline characteristics were comparable between groups in terms of age, sex, weight, height, and interatrial septum dimensions. Patients with ASD > 20 mm (n = 9) had a higher ASD/device dimension ratio, both at echocardiography (p = 0.009) and at sizing balloon (p = 0.001), longer fluoroscopic time (p = 0.022), and higher incidence of device thrombosis (0.006). Right disc thrombosis was observed in three patients of the ASD > 20 mm group, always in the inferior portion of the right disc. On univariate analysis, ASD diameter at sizing balloon (OR 1.360; p = 0.036) was the only positive predictor of device thrombosis.
Conclusions
Right disc thrombosis of the GCA device may be under‐recognized at follow‐up, hence deserving clinical attention, especially in those patients with larger ASD diameters.
Transcatheter closure is the first-line treatment for ostium secundum atrial septal defect (ASD). The GORE Cardioform ASD Occluder (GCA) is potentially innovative compared with other self-centering ...devices. This study aimed to compare the mechanic changes in atrial and ventricular properties before and after GCA implantation. All consecutive patients aged <18 years who underwent isolated ASD closure with a single GCA device were enrolled from 2 centers. Echocardiography and electrocardiogram were performed the day before, 24 hours, and 6 months after ASD closure. Between January 2020 and February 2021, 70 pediatric patients with ASD were enrolled. The mean age was 7.9 ± 3.9 years, and the mean defect diameter was 17.1 ± 4.5 mm. Global longitudinal strain analysis showed no change in left ventricular longitudinal function (T0 -23.2 ± 2.8%, 24 hours -23.0 ± 2.8%, and 6 months -23.5 ± 2.7%). An early and transient reduction in longitudinal strain was detected in the basal septal segments (T0 -19.8 ± 3.3%, 24 hours -18.7 ± 3.6%, and 6 months -19.2 ± 3.4%), left atrium (T0 41.4 ± 15.3%, 29.2 ± 1.4%, and 39.0 ± 12.9%), and right ventricle (-27.6 ± 5.4%, -23.6 ± 5.0%, and -27.3 ± 4.6) 24 hours after closure, secondary to hemodynamic changes because of flow redirection after ASD closure. Six months after the procedure, only the left atrium showed a mild global longitudinal strain reduction because of the presence of the device within the septum. GCA device had no impact on global and regional ventricular function. Atrial mechanics were preserved, except for the segments covered by the device. This is the first device demonstrating no impact on the left and right ventricular mechanics, irrespective of the device size.
•Marking and delineation treatments were tested with and without guardrails.•Vertical and horizontal red-white panels on guardrails attracted the most overt attention.•Without guardrails, large ...object markers better-attracted attention.•Results seem to favor red object markers over green ones, but additional research is required.
Highway exit gore areas are common and essential components of highway networks everywhere. Drivers need to navigate, decelerate, and change lanes at exit gore areas through specified and compacted geometry. This makes exit gore areas potentially crash-prone locations. Studies analyzed factors contributing to crashes at exit gore areas. Although marking and delineation techniques can play a major role in enhancing safety, traffic control devices that serve this end were not given sufficient attention in recent research. Furthermore, the currently used marking and delineation treatments are widely different around the world and deploy devices of various forms, shapes, sizes, and colors. The Flemish Agency for Roads & Traffic (AWV) launched a study to explore the feasibility of adding colored and sizeable eye-catching objects, mounted or grounded exactly at the physical nose, to attract driver's attention and improve driving performance. The eye-tracking and driving behavior of 49 Belgian drivers was investigated in a driving simulator. Participants were also queried about the conspicuity of the control devices and their personal preferences. The results were univocal for situations including a guardrail. Using two mounted panels together, i.e., the horizontal and the vertical, scored better on all levels than the horizontal panel alone. The bigger surface size of the traffic control device significantly improved driving performance and was also favored by the participants. Situations without a guardrail lacked such clear results, which were mixed depending on the measure at hand. A larger size of a grounded object-marker, again, improved driver's performance. Findings concerning the colors red or green appeared to favor red, although this was less univocal. These findings are aimed to spark ideas for further research and to assist practitioners and policy-makers in better designing exit gore areas while achieving more consistency and safety.
Introduction
Cataract surgery is one of the most common surgical procedures performed worldwide. Intraocular lens (IOL) implants are placed routinely in the capsular bag after successful cataract ...extraction. However, in the absence of adequate capsular support, IOL may be placed in the anterior chamber, fixated to the iris or fixated to the sclera. The purpose of this study is to report the clinical outcomes and safety profile of a trans-scleral sutured intraocular lens (IOL) technique using scleral flaps, vitrectomy, and Gore-Tex suture to place posterior chamber IOL.
Methods
Retrospective, interventional case series of eyes undergoing scleral fixation of an IOL using Gore-Tex suture with concurrent vitrectomy. Ocular examination with the logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution visual acuity (logMAR BCVA), tonometry, and slit-lamp biomicroscopy was performed on all patients at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after the operation. All post-operative complications were recorded.
Results
Twenty-five eyes of 25 patients were included. Mean logMAR BCVA improved from 0.43 ± 0.36 (20\40 Snellen equivalent) preoperatively to 0.13 ± 0.18 (20\25 Snellen equivalent) postoperatively at 12 months (p<0.01). Indications included surgical aphakia (16) and dislocated lens implant (9). No cases of IOL opacification, suprachoroidal haemorrhage, post-operative endophthalmitis, IOL dislocation, Gore-Tex exposure, or retinal detachment were observed during the follow-up period.
Conclusion
Ab externo scleral fixation of IOLs with Gore-Tex suture plus scleral flap is well tolerated and associated with a very low rate of suture exposition. Moreover, our study confirms excellent refractive outcomes after surgery.

The delay in the absorption of village funds from the central government to the village government is due to the village government's difficulty preparing village development innovation programs. The ...innovation tradition will grow if the cycle of transformation of knowledge and acceptable practices from one village to another, especially villages with similar conditions and problems, can run smoothly. For the process of exchanging knowledge and experiences between villages to run smoothly, it is necessary to codify best practices in a structured, documented, and disseminated manner. This research aims to design an application that functions as a medium for sharing knowledge about the use of village funds through government innovation narratives. The application is expected to become a reference for villages to carry out innovative practices by conducting replication studies and replicating acceptable practices that other villages have done. Therefore, it is necessary to have a system requirements elicitation method that can explore the village's requirements in sharing knowledge so that the resulting system is of high quality and by the objectives of being developed. There are several Goal-Oriented Requirements Engineering (GORE) methods used, such as Knowledge Acquisition in Automated Specification (KAOS) and requirements engineering based on business processes. In this research, the KAOS method was demonstrated as the elicitation activity of a village innovation system. Then the results were stated in the Goal Tree Model (GTM). Model building begins with discussions with the manager of the village innovation program to produce goals. The goals are then broken down into several sub-goals using the KAOS method. The KAOS method is used for the requirements elicitation process resulting in functional and non-functional requirements. This research is the elicitation of the requirement for the village innovation system so that it can demonstrate the initial steps in determining the requirements of the village innovation system before carrying out the design process and the system creation process. The results of this requirement elicitation can be used further in the software engineering process to produce quality and appropriate village innovation applications.
