The aim of the present article was to conduct a primary analysis of a style/styles of a modern self-help manual (particularly in the form of a book), which analysis would take into consideration the ...following detailed problems: a handbook versus typical styles, the stylistic component of the handbook model, the style of a handbook and/versus the “handbook-like” style, the style of handbook texts. The observations presented here should be perceived as a fragment of a broader project which focused on recreating a model (a pattern) of the genre and its textual realisations. The analyses were conducted in line with the paradigms of linguistic genology and stylistics. The subject was selected on the basis of an assumption pertaining to the uncertain discursive status of handbooks – being now an expansive, polymorphic and transgressive form of discourse, which spreads its features to other genre forms. Uncertain remains the stylistic affiliation of this form of utterance, recognised by receivers/readers. Within the handbook sphere (no matter what genre it represents), one may introduce indicators of numerous styles and language variants. Specialist fields of science (law, Information Technology, medicine, etc.) impose their own, more or less hermetic ‘language’ on genre actualisations. Language styles are represented not only by verbal codes. In the case of handbooks, equally important is the image code – a picture, chart, or in a broader sense: a graphic shape of the text (a book). The review of textual empiricism should also be extended by stylistic distinctiveness which arises from individual preferences and traits of the author of discourse.
"Nonviolence is not the recourse of the weak but actually calls for an uncommon kind of strength; it is not a refraining from something but the engaging of a positive force, " renowned peace activist ...Michael Nagler writes. Here he offers a step-by-step guide to creatively using nonviolence to confront any problem and to build change movements capable of restructuring the very bedrock of society. Nagler identifies some specific tactical mistakes made by unsuccessful nonviolent actions such as the Tiananmen Square demonstrations and the Occupy protests and includes stories of successful nonviolent resistance from around the world, including an example from Nazi Germany. And he shows that nonviolence is more than a tactic—it is a way of living that will enrich every area of our lives.
This article shows some reflections obtained from the project ''Approximation to the translation of scientific and technical texts''. The project was carried out following these steps: search and ...selection of curricular information and readings about translation as a theoretical support for the proposal; creation of the Handbook for Teaching Translation of Scientific and Technical Texts: English/ Spanish, including its learning portfolio to evaluate its workshops; testing of some workshops and implementation of strategies for its divulgation. This project evidenced the shortage of programs for studying translation of scientific and technical texts in Colombia; the lack of consensus in the conceptualization of the text types referred as specialized languages and the need for revising the rigid structure followed, in general, by the existing translation handbooks. This handbook can be used in different translation settings, thanks to the universality of the technical and scientific languages and to the features it presents. However, it is necessary to continue testing its results in different settings in order to deepen in the research of the didactics of translation.

The purpose of this study was to consider the situation of gymnasiums in Austria around 1950 through analysis of a physical education course, with a particular focus on the type of physical exercise. ...The main historical materials examined were administrative documents of the Federal Ministry Republic of Austria Education in the Archive der Republic, which was a department of the Austrian State Archives in Vienna. The handbook Leibeserziehung (1949) written by H. Groll and W. Burger, who were leading figures in Austrian PE after the Second World War, was referenced. Through this research it was possible to obtain facts about the situation of gymnasiums from 5 out of 8 counties in Austria and Vienna city. The results of the analysis are summarized as follows: Although the Austrian Government published a new national course of study on September 3rd 1945, there weremany problems with the exact practice of PE throughout the country. Around 1950, the situation of gymnasiums in Austria was far from ideal, and some were still derelict as a result of bombing, or had been requisitioned by film companies; some had insufficient heating or were unsuitable for ball games. Importantly, it appeared that there were no gymnasiums in schools at this time. According to the administrative documents, it appeared that in a worst-case scenario, the practice of PE might have to be stopped. These effects extended to the practice of PE on cold winter days or during bad weather. Therefore, a lot of schools were forced to practice PE carried using substitute exercises or in small spaces in the classroom. These substitute exercises were called “Zehnminutenturnen” (10-Minute Exercises) and “Klassenzimmerturnen” (Classroom Exercises) in the handbook Leibeserziehung, and “Minutenturunen” (Minute Exercises) and “Zimmerturnen” (Room Exercises) in the administrative documents. In particular, the practice of “Zehnminutenturnen” and “Klassenzimmerturnen”, i.e. “old free gymnastics”, continued to deviate from the Austrian course of study. Consequently, these situations meant that the reconstruction of Austrian PE after the Second World War was very difficult. It would have been difficult to overcome many of the problems associated with Austrian PE without drastically changing the situation of gymnasiums.
