Sport-related concussion counts, percentages, rates per 10 000 athlete-exposures (AEs), rate ratios (RRs), and injury proportion ratios (IPRs) were reported with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Rate ratios and IPRs with 95% CIs not containing 1.0 were considered significant.
Overall, 2004 SRCs were reported among 27 high school sports, for a rate of 3.89 per 10 000 AEs. Football had the highest SRC rate (9.21/10 000 AEs), followed by boys' lacrosse (6.65/10 000 AEs) and girls' soccer (6.11/10 000 AEs). The SRC rate was higher in competition than in practice (RR = 3.30; 95% CI = 3.02, 3.60). Among sex-comparable sports, the SRC rate was higher in girls than in boys (RR = 1.56; 95% CI = 1.34, 1.81); however, the proportion of SRCs due to player-to-player contact was higher in boys than in girls (IPR = 1.48; 95% CI = 1.27, 1.73). Common symptoms reported among all athletes with SRCs were headache (94.7%), dizziness (74.8%), and difficulty concentrating (61.0%). Only 0.8% of players with SRCs returned to play within 24 hours. The majority of athletes with SRCs (65.8%) returned to play between 7 and 28 days. More players had symptoms resolve after 7 days (48.8%) than less than a week (40.7%).
Our findings provide updated high school SRC incidence estimates and further evidence of sex differences in reported SRCs. Few athletes with SRCs returned to play within 24 hours or a week. Most injured players returned after 7 days, despite a smaller proportion having symptoms resolve within a week.

Participants were 213 high school students with an average age of 15.18 years in an urban public school district in the Northeast United States. Students were asked to select their three most important goals one time and report on their sense of purpose once a day for 3 weeks in spring of 2022. Latent class analysis was used to classify students by the type of goals selected. Differences in the overall sense of purpose and its subscales by class were examined.
A model with four classes (Self and Inner Circle, Inner Circle, Other-Oriented, and Self-Oriented) best fits the data. There were no statistical group differences in the variability of daily purpose and overall sense of purpose. Only one pairwise comparison was significant and indicated that students in the Other-Oriented group perceived their purpose as more meaningful than students in the Self and Inner Circle group.
Findings from this study provide a lens into goal prioritization patterns among adolescents. Further, although students who were more likely to select other-oriented goals had somewhat higher perceptions of sense of purpose, findings support the concept of equifinality by suggesting that a sense of purpose may be actualized through a diverse set of specific goals.
Given a looming shortage of surgeons and currently inadequate pipelines into our specialty for under-represented groups, there is an urgent need to identify and foster interest in young individuals ...who may have great potential as future surgeons. We aimed to explore the utility and feasibility of a novel survey instrument to identify high-school students well suited for careers in surgery based on personality profiling and grit.
An electronic screening tool was developed, combining components of the Myers-Briggs personality profile, the Big-Five Inventory 10, and the grit scale. This brief questionnaire was electronically distributed to surgeons and students across two academic institutions and three high schools (one private and two public). Wilcoxon rank-sum test and Chi-squared/Fisher's exact test were performed to evaluate variations between groups.
Surgeons (n = 96) displayed mean Grit score of 4.03 (range: 3.08-4.92; standard deviation: 0.43), while high-schoolers’ (n = 61) mean score was 3.38 (range: 2.08-4.58; standard deviation: 0.62) (P < 0.0001). Surgeons showed Myers-Brigg Type Indicator trait-dominance toward extroversion, intuition, thinking, and judging, while students displayed greater breadth of traits. Students were much less likely to show dominance in introversion versus extroversion (P < 0.0001) as well as perceiving versus judging (P < 0.0001). Big-Five Inventory 10 traits of neuroticism and conscientiousness were more prevalent among surgeons (P < 0.0001 for both).
Importantly, there exists a subgroup of high-school students with personality and grit similar to those of surgeons. Moreover, we have demonstrated the feasibility of using this novel screening tool for future studies aimed to create pipelines for early exposure opportunities and mentorship.
Improving experimental competence for students is an essential mission in general education nowadays, helping students initially establish scientific research capacity and is a part of cognitive ...capacity of scientific knowledge, especially in the study of natural sciences such as biology, physics and chemistry. In this article, theoretical and practical research methods have been used in combination with pedagogical experiment on 85 students, of which 43 students and control over 42 tenth grade students at a high school in Vietnam. The data processed by SPSS 20.0 software shows that using empirical exercises in teaching will significantly improve the students’ experimental competence. The level of students' experimental capacity increased in the experimental class compared to the control class, the results before and after the experiment of the experimental class also changed positively. The initial research result indicates the role of empirical exercises in enhancing the experimental capacity of students, the study also suggested the process of using experimental exercises in teaching to improve students’ experimental capacity. The findings of the research could be important in proposing solutions to improve the academic performance of students in high schools, not only in the area of teaching biology but also extending into other subjects.
The article presents modern trends in testing and assessing learning outcomes in the direction of developing the quality and capacity of high school students. The basic signs of difference between ...assessing learners' ability and assessing learners' knowledge and skills are also studied and synthesized. A tool to test and evaluate the topic of frictional force in the direction of developing the quality and capacity of students in teaching Physics has been designed. Based on the experimental results of pedagogy at Tuong Duong 1 High School, the effectiveness of the proposed tools has been evaluated, thereby proposing solutions to improve the efficiency of testing and assessment in the direction of developing the quality and competence of students.
Abstract This study examined associations among depression, suicidal behaviors, and bullying and victimization experiences in 1491 high school students using data from the 2009 Youth Risk Behavior ...Survey. Results demonstrated that depression mediated the association between bullying/victimization and suicide attempts, but differently for males and females. Specifically, depression mediated the link between traditional victimization and suicide attempts similarly across gender, whereas depression mediated the link between cyber victimization and suicide attempts only for females. Similarly, depression mediated the link between traditional bullying and suicide attempts for females only. Depression did not mediate the link between cyberbullying and suicide attempts for either gender. Implications of the findings are discussed, including the importance of greater detection of depression among students involved in bullying, and the need for a suicide prevention and intervention component in anti-bullying programs. Findings suggest that bullying prevention efforts be extended from middle school students to include high school students.
Musculoskeletal pain in youth is common but little is known about the influence of the number of pain sites on pain characteristics. The objective of this study was to compare pain characteristics, ...quality of life, sleep, sport participation between adolescents without pain, those with single site pain, and those with multi-site pain and investigate the relationship between pain duration and number of pain sites.
An online survey was sent via email to 7177 possible middle- and high-school students. The students completed a survey containing questions about their pain (including location, duration, intensity, frequency), health-related quality of life, sleep quantity and quality, and sports participation. Quantitative variables were analysed with one-way ANOVAs or t-tests and qualitative variables were analysed with Pearson Chi-squared tests. Relationships were investigated with a Pearson Correlation.
Of the respondents (n = 1021), 52.9% reported no pain, 17.2% reported pain in a single-site, and 29.9% reported pain in multiple sites. Those with multi-site pain reported significantly lower quality of life than both pain-free youth (p < 0.001) and those with single-site pain (p < 0.001); those with single-site pain had lower quality of life than pain-free youth (p < 0.001). Those with pain reported worse sleep than those without pain (P < 0.05). No differences in sport participation were found (p > 0.10). Those with multi-site pain reported greater intensity (p = 0.005) and duration (p < 0.001) than those with single-site pain. A positive, moderate, and significant correlation (r = 0.437, p < 0.001) was found between the pain duration and number of pain sites.
A large percentage of youth experience regular pain that affects their self-reported quality of life and sleep, with greater effects in those with multi-site pain.
We study the impact of a public school choice lottery in Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools on college enrollment and degree completion. We find a significant overall increase in college attainment among ...lottery winners who attend their first-choice school. Using rich administrative data on peers, teachers, course offerings, and other inputs, we show that the impacts of choice are strongly predicted by gains on several measures of school quality. Gains in attainment are concentrated among girls. Girls respond to attending a better school with higher grades and increases in college-preparatory course taking, while boys do not.

= 400,000) and were tracked for 11+ years; their longitudinal findings were aligned with pre-1957 findings and with contemporary data from the Graduate Record Examination and the Study of Mathematically Precocious Youth. For decades, spatial ability assessed during adolescence has surfaced as a salient psychological attribute among those adolescents who subsequently go on to achieve advanced educational credentials and occupations in STEM. Results solidify the generalization that spatial ability plays a critical role in developing expertise in STEM and suggest, among other things, that including spatial ability in modern talent searches would identify many adolescents with potential for STEM who are currently being missed.
