Based on photographic sources of a school parade during Getulio Vargas's New State period, current historiographic essay shows how, within a specific historical place and time, the photographic ...records identify the relationships between civic school parades and the primary school and the period's political ideology and environment. The article is divided into two parts. The first part provides brief considerations on the nature of the photographic image as evidence for historians and defines the manner it will be examined. The second part deals with the analysis and interpretation of photographs of the parade involving students of the Elementary School Dr. Manoel Pedro in the town of Lapa, Parana State, Brazil, in 1941.
The Benedictine abbey of St Albans was a centre of manuscript production and history writing in England throughout the late Middle Ages. This thesis will, for the first time, study the entire corpus ...of historiographical manuscripts produced at and associated with St Albans and its historians, from the beginning of history writing at the abbey in the thirteenth century to antiquarian production four centuries later. By utilising a visual approach to manuscript analysis, this thesis will establish key changes in history writing during this period and, moreover, re-evaluate the roles of individual historians and their chronicles within the wider monastic context. What will be demonstrated is that the importance placed on certain works by modern historians is not representative of the contemporary significance of these chronicles, with other St Albans historiographical traditions instead proving more relevant to medieval audiences. Furthermore, continuing the research through to the period of early printing and aftermath of the Dissolution of the monasteries allows us to see how traditional monastic chronicles were viewed and used in a changing intellectual climate. The historiographical manuscripts of St Albans Abbey, therefore, provide a consistent and continuous insight into cultural, intellectual and religious changes in England between 1200-1600.
Matthew Rampley’s The Vienna School of Art History is the first book in over seventy-five years to study in depth and in context the practices of art history from 1847, the year the first teaching ...position in the discipline was created, to 1918, the collapse of Austria-Hungary. It traces the emergence of art history as a discipline, the establishment of norms of scholarly enquiry, and the involvement of art historians in wider debates about the cultural and political identity of the monarchy. While Rampley also examines the formation of art history elsewhere in Austria-Hungary, the so-called Vienna School plays the central role in the study. Located in the Habsburg imperial capital, Vienna art historians frequently became entangled in debates that were of importance to art historians elsewhere in the Empire, and the book pays particular attention to these areas of overlapping interest. The Vienna School was well known for its methodological innovations and this book analyzes its contributions in this area. Rampley focuses most fully, however, on the larger political and ideological context of the practice of art history, in particular the way in which art historical debates served as proxies for wider arguments over the political, social, and cultural life of the Habsburg Empire.
Despite the fact that Robert Harley is known as Tory politician, he began his career as a Whig politician. His grandfather and father were Presbyterians, and Robert Harley himself was a Presbyterian ...during his entire life. Harley’s family supported the Glorious Revolution of 1688. In 1689 Robert Harley was first elected to the House of Commons as a representative of the Whig party. Thanks to his wife’s Foley family, Robert Harley was elected as a commissioner of public accounts in the House of Commons. In 1689 Britain entered the “war of King William” which was a burden for many gentry (Whigs or Tories). Robert Harley became famous in the parliament as a critic of the war and corruption in the army. In 1693 the Whig leaders headed the ministry and continued the war. Their policy divided the Whigs party in two factions: “Court Whigs” and “Country Whigs”. Robert Harley and his supporters became “Country Whigs”, and they criticized the “Court Whigs”. By 1700 Robert Harley joined the Tory party. The article also describes the evolution of historiography of Harley‘s policy. Victorian historians have called the Prime Minister a “stupid person”. The same opinion was repeated by Russian historians of the 19th century. But in the 20th century the assessment of Robert Harley’s activity was changed by the works of K. Feiling, G. Holmes, B.W. Hill and other historians. Soviet historians (for example M.A. Barg) also called R.Harley a “mediocre politician”, but modern Russian historians (L.I. Ivonina, T.L. Labutina and others) consider him a “clever statesman” and a “master of political intrigues and parliamentary diplomacy”.

La finalidad de este trabajo es examinar qué rol puede desempeñar la historia comparada en el futuro de la historia antigua. Mi propósito es mostrar por qué la historia comparada es importante, así ...como explorar las diferentes formas de realizar una historia comparada y las ventajas y desventajas que estas formas implican. Los historiadores antiguos utilizaron la historia comparada para completar la carencia de evidencia antigua, para estudiar las similitudes entre áreas y períodos separados en el tiempo y en el espacio, para "desfamiliarizar lo familial", o para analizar cómo habían tratado problemas similares los otros historiadores. Este artículo analiza los problemas metodológicos que los diferentes abordajes de la historia comparada implican y provee una revisión de cómo esos abordajes afectaron diversas áreas de la historia antigua. Aunque cada abordaje puede ofrecer su propia y valiosa contribución, existen razones importantes para preferir un abordaje entre otros.
