This chapter sketches some of the methods and sources that scholars use to reconstruct the history of the emotions. It considers some challenges historians face when studying emotions, as they try to ...pinpoint both what they are studying and how to study it. The feeling itself would be long gone, after all, as well as the person who experienced it. The chapter addresses these issues by first examining the contested connection between feelings and words. It then turns its attention to an equally thorny issue—the relationship between emotional norms and individual emotional experience. Finally, the chapter considers the sources that scholars have available to them, and the creative ways that historians use them to understand the past.
The historical sources, which contain important information concerning some cultural aspects of different indigenous group of Mesoamerica, the Zoque ethnic group is one of many others. Nevertheless, ...the data relevant to the Zoque are quite limited. Generally, the data located in various documents are the results of a very personal and restricted point of view of authors who probably were even not witnesses of the described reality. Therefore, they reproduced information transmitted to them by others, or they reconstructed their memory after many years. Besides, some data proceeding from different authors are contradictory. Consequently, the analysis of the written sources has to be meticulous, always having in mind sort of statement provided by the source document. Thus, by means of detailed research carried on sources which contain information about the Zoque, it can be suggested that there was never
any Mexica garrison in the Nahua population of the three Cimatan. Neither the Zoque ethnic
group from the Gulf region did ever pay any tribute to the Mexica.

Reconstructing the environment of Lesotho in order to assess soil erosion at different time scales, highlights conflicting views about the initiation of accelerated erosion. Indigenous agricultural ...practices were sensitive to the fragile environment and aimed to ensure a protective vegetative cover. The imposition of colonial conservation techniques overlooked local wisdom regarding soil erosion prevention, was often ineffective, and arguably accelerated soil erosion. Loss of flat fertile land to the Boers, changes from indigenous agriculture to commercial cultivation, concentration of population on steep slopes, were among causes that contributed to accelerated erosion, and to indigenous agricultural systems becoming less effective.
