In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, this edited volume revisits the framework of human security and development. It examines the protection-empowerment nexus as applied to various vulnerable ...groups and populations affected by the pandemic. While the conventional human security literature has focused on top-down protection, this book offers new perspectives on human security by exploring bottom-up empowerment from both theoretical and practical perspectives. It also encourages readers to rethink the agency of vulnerable people in addressing the challenges posed by the pandemic. Through eight case studies from Southeast Asia and Japan, the contributors to this book demonstrate the importance of empowerment in achieving human security. They focus on the responses of vulnerable groups and communities to multiple threats to their lives, livelihoods, and dignity. The chapters discuss key human security concerns, such as poverty, the environment, food, forced migration, gender, health, aging, peace, and justice – all of which have been compounded and exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Sweet Deal, Bitter Landscape brings us to the mid-2000s, when the Tanzanian government struck a deal with a foreign investor to convert more than 20,000 hectares of long-settled coastal land to ...establish a sugarcane plantation. Ten years on, the deal was abruptly abandoned. Popularly deemed a case of hubristic global development, critics classified this project another in a line of failed modern resource grabs. Youjin B. Chung argues such tidy accounts conceal myriad and profound implications: not only how gender, history, and culture shaped the project's trajectory, but also how, even in its stalled state, the deal upended social life on the land by setting in motion incomplete processes of development and dispossession. With rich ethnographic detail and visual storytelling, Sweet Deal, Bitter Landscape traces the lived experiences of diverse rural women and men as they struggled for survival under a seemingly endless condition of liminality. In so doing, she raises critical questions about the directions and stakes of postcolonial development and nation-building in Tanzania, and the shifting meanings of identity and belonging for those on the margins of capitalist agrarian transformation.
Through a discussion of urban foraging in Seattle, Washington, USA, we examine how people's plant and mushroom harvesting practices in cities are linked to relationships with species, spaces, and ...ecologies. Bringing a relational approach to political ecology, we discuss the ways that these particular nature-society relationships are formed, legitimated, and mobilized in discursive and material ways in urban ecosystems. Engaging closely with and as foragers, we develop an ethnographically grounded 'relational ecologies of belonging' framework to conceptualize and examine three constituent themes: cultural belonging and identity, belonging and place, and belonging and more-than-human agency. Through this case study, we show the complex ways that urban foraging is underpinned by interconnected and multiple notions of identity, place, mobility, and agency for both humans and more-than-human interlocutors. The focus on relational ecologies of belonging illuminates important challenges for environmental management and public space planning in socioecologically diverse areas. Ultimately, these challenges reflect negotiated visions about how we organize ourselves and live together in cosmopolitan spaces such as cities.

The article describes the most important results from selected papers concerning the climate of Poznań. The structure of the paper is twofold. The first part presents articles and topics which are ...based on the data recoded in the Poznań-Ławica airport meteorological station. The second part presents papers where, in addition to data from the airport station, data from the network measurements of municipal stations are also included. This section contains issues concerning the urban heat island, the surface urban heat island, relations between the urban heat island and atmospheric circulation, the characteristics of air temperature and surface temperature according to the Corine Land Cover classification types, as well as information on the creation of a statistical model of air temperature in town according to satellite and in situ data derived from municipal station.
At all levels of spatial planning, development leads to achieve spatial order. First of all, it means ordering and harmony between various components and functions of space. An easily observable ...phenomenon is very difficult to study. The purpose of this article is to develop a method for measuring spatial order on a morphological and physiognomic scale. Other aim is test this method on the example of Piotrków Trybunalski. Except for examine spatial order in various scales, the prepared method allows to compare results for different examined spaces. It is a tool that does not require complicated procedures or difficult to obtain data.
The work presents a historical outline and main achievements of Lodz researchers in the field of urban climate. Although regular meteorological measurements in Lodz began at the beginning of the 20th ...century, the development of urban climatology, understood as the city's influence on the field of meteorological elements, dates back to the 1950s. The last decade of the 20th century and the beginning of the present century brought a special intensification of activities in the field of urban climatology in Lodz. Apart from studies on the classic problems of the urban heat island or solar relations, unique measurements of the heat balance, surface exchange of greenhouse gases (CO2 and CH4) or radon concentration in the city were carried out during this period; the innovative measurement methods (scintillometry) were used and original numerical models were developed.
In this paper, we present the history and development of urban climate research in Wrocław, undertaken at the University of Wrocław (UWr), mainly at the Department of Climatology and Atmosphere ...Protection (DCAP). The main scientific topics, such as mesoclimate, bioclimate, urban heat island, and air quality in Wrocław are described. There were two milestones in urban climate research at UWr. First, the turn of the 21st century was associated with the introduction of automatic weather stations, mobile measurements and acoustic soundings, supported with GIS analysis, for the spatio-temporal studies of Wrocław (bio)climate. In the second decade of the 21st century, our research is mostly related to urban air quality. New measuring techniques have been introduced, supported with numerical models (WRF, WRF-Chem), and much greater attention has been devoted to scientific research applications (the LIFE-APIS/PL project).
A short history and the results of urban climate research in Gdańsk and Gdynia are presented in the paper. The initial research of Gdańsk’s climate was associated with the early beginning of ...meteorological measurements in 1739. In the last decades of the 19th century, the importance of studies devoted to ensuring the safety of shipping and harbour activity increased significantly. The interwar period was characterized by great development of meteorological observatories in Gdańsk and Gdynia. The research efforts were particularly dedicated to the recognition of local climatic conditions, including the phenom-enon of sea breeze. In the post-war period, advanced field research was undertaken to characterize the characteristic features of spatial variability of meteorological elements in Gdynia and Gdańsk. Various aspects of applied urban climatology are present in the research of the last decades of the 20th century and present times.
