As government agencies increasingly experience data security breaches, information privacy concerns are inevitably raised among e-government users. This study explores the impact of Internet users' ...information privacy concerns (IUIPC) on the adoption of e-government services. Grounded in the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA), this study proposes IUIPC namely, collection, control, and awareness, will influence trust of the Internet (TOI) and perceived risks, which in turn impact the adoption of e-government.
Consumer concerns for information privacy (CFIP) have become an important strategic issue for companies. In order to be successful companies develop consumer databases and use consumer information to ...develop customized products and services, and target potential consumers more effectively. However, the intensity and the volume of direct marketing communications, and the potential misuse of consumer personal data contribute to an increase in CFIP. As a result, consumers might protect their privacy, which may inhibit the growth of database marketing, direct marketing and e-commerce as well. The purpose of this paper is to examine and present the antecedents and consequences of CFIP in the context of database marketing. This paper introduces a theoretical model that examines the impacts of consumer attitudes towards database marketing on CFIP, and the effects of CFIP on willingness to provide information, purchase intentions and consumer purchases. The model posits that perceived ability to control information might alleviate the effects of unfavourable consumer attitudes towards database marketing on CFIP, while perceived usefulness of IT might reduce negative effects of CFIP on willingness to provide information, purchase intentions and actual purchases. Managerial implications are discussed in the paper.
Healthcare organisations process massive amount of electronic medical records (EMR) utilised by their employees. Having given privileged access to sensitive and valuable patient information in the ...EMR, healthcare employees may cause privacy breaches, which may lead to detrimental consequences. Therefore, it is vital to impose particular attention to healthcare employees' concerns on privacy in the use of EMR. The purpose of this paper is to identify the factors that influence information privacy concerns (IPC), subsequently to design and evaluate the proposed model. An explanatory study was employed in the research with a Malaysian hospital under the Statutory Body as a case study. The unit of analysis comprised of healthcare employees. The quantitative data were analysed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), ascertained only privacy awareness was positively related to IPC and also mediate the relationship between privacy policy and IPC, demonstrating the significance of privacy policy in elevating privacy awareness. Hence, this study contributed by validating IPC in Malaysian healthcare setting, subsequently facilitates the healthcare organisations to understand IPC from employees' perspective in ensuring the compliance with Personal Data Protection Act 2010. In addition, healthcare organisations should deem upon inculcating pertinent awareness initiatives among their employees in upholding IPC in the use of EMR.
Purpose
– The purpose of this paper is to propose and empirically test a theoretical model that considers the predictors of an individual’s perceptions of information privacy, and also how it relates ...to his/her behavioral intention toward approaching hospital web sites.
Design/methodology/approach
– This paper collects data using survey methodology. A total of 331 usable participants are gathered and analyzed via structural equation modeling.
Findings
– Significant predictors of information privacy concerns include a stated online privacy policy and a hospital’s reputation. Further, online privacy policy predicts a hospital’s reputation. Finally, hospital reputation and information privacy concerns significantly predict an individual’s behavioral intention toward approaching hospital web sites.
Research limitations/implications
– The study confirmed that an online privacy policy and reputation can effectively alleviate specific information privacy concerns; therefore, this may indicate that these two factors should be considered whenever investigating individuals’ information privacy concerns.
Practical implications
– To acquire a good reputation and to diminish individuals’ information privacy concerns toward hospital web sites, hospitals should pay attention to the posting of an online privacy policy and communicating such policies to given individuals.
Originality/value
– This paper fulfils the gap of exploring the relationship among online privacy policy, organization reputation, and information privacy concerns. Further, the hypothesized model and its findings could also provide useful information for managers who are intent on boosting hospital web site usage frequency patterns.

One of the key factors affecting the growth of e-commerce is the lack of Internet users' confidence in online information privacy. Despite the importance of understanding the nature of the Internet ...users' concerns for information privacy, this topic is considered by many to be in the nascent stage. To fill the gap in the literature, this study examines the influence of demographic factors on Internet users' concerns for information privacy. Based on an empirical survey of 199 Internet users it was found that certain demographic factors, namely age, education and income level influence Internet users' concerns for information privacy. Others factors such as gender and Internet experience were found to have no influence. The implications of these and other findings are discussed.
Smartphones are essential devices in most people’s lives nowadays. There are many benefits offered by smartphones, such as: the ability to access the internet, e-mail, access social media, etc. Their ...advanced features and ease of use enhances their functionality including storing contacts, photos, videos and other sensitive information. Thus, smartphones become attractive target for hackers especially with regard to get unauthorized access to sensitive data from users that violates their privacy. This paper investigated the impact of users’ intention in using a smartphone despite privacy threats that can occur. Questionnaires were distributed to 300 respondents who were actively using a smartphone to obtain the study data. The level of relationships among the constructs were analysed using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). The results of this study indicate that the factors that influence users in using a smartphone are mobile users’ information privacy concern, perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness.
Reluctance to provide personal health information could impede the success of web-based healthcare services. This paper focuses on the role of personal dispositions in disclosing health information ...online. The conceptual model argues that individuals' intention to disclose such information depends on their trust, privacy concern, and information sensitivity, which are determined by personal dispositions—personality traits, information sensitivity, health status, prior privacy invasions, risk beliefs, and experience—acting as intrinsic antecedents of trust. The data (collected via a lab experiment) and the analysis shed light on the role of personal dispositions. This could assist in enhancing healthcare websites and increase the success of online delivery of health services.
Privacy policy statements and privacy assurance cues are among the most important website features that online providers use to increase individuals' trust and willingness to disclose private ...information online. The focus of this study is a comprehensive examination of the process by which privacy assurance mechanisms influence trust and the moderating role of privacy concern in this process. We use the lens of the Elaboration Likelihood Model to investigate the way different individuals perceive and process privacy assurance mechanisms. We argue that the trust-enhancing role of these mechanisms depends on the individual's privacy concern. The results of this study articulate the process by which various privacy assurance mechanisms operate in enhancing an individual's trust, and show that there are distinct behavioral differences between individuals with high- vs low-privacy concern when forming their trust to disclose private information. The paper sheds new light on the role of elaboration in the trust building process, and shows why privacy assurance mechanisms have different impacts depending on individuals' privacy concerns.
