Abstract This study examines the gallery project in the Hall of Kings at the Alcazar of Segovia, constructed by Enrique IV of Castile around 1458-1466, from the point of view of an understanding of ...royal iconography and the composition of the inscriptions that accompanied them. To achieve this, our starting point will be the testimonies that reproduced the inscriptions of the original project: the Memorial que se sacó del Alcaçar de Segobia, de la sala de los Reyes (1588) (Report Copied from the Hall of Kings at the Alcazar of Segovia) by Juan Fernandez de Contreras, governor of the Alcazar, and De las estatuas antiguas (Of Ancient Statues) (1590) by Diego de Villalta. The work will enable us to highlight the close contact that the gallery had with the combination of chronicles, the complementary role that text and image had in the concept of the project and its role in communicating a set of historical images which stressed the link between the Castilian monarchy and the Visigothic kings.

On the existential use of perception verbs.
This article deals with the existential use of the French verb
voir
(‘see’). We show how this verb can be used in thetic statements to express existence (as in
on voit des trèfles à quatre feuilles
(lit..‘one sees four-leaf clovers’). The existential reading of
voir
is conditioned by the presence of a set of defining properties of existential constructions (non-referential subject, indefiniteness of the object, locative anchoring). We show that in order to satisfy these properties, the transitive features of voir must be strongly weakened, especially concerning the subject. We examine in which contexts commutations between
il y a
(‘there is’) and
on voit
(‘one sees’) are possible, and what is the specific, irreducible contribution of
voir
. This specificity is due to the fact that
voir
implies a subject argument (the seer) which, even when reduced to a generic indefinite or erased in a passive form, persists to varying degrees. We propose to explain some subtle differences between
il y a
and
on voit
by the minimal inscription of an observer in connection with the assertion of the existence or presence of an entity.
In Voices on Birchbark Jos Schaeken explores the major role that writing on birchbark - an ephemeral, even 'throw-away' form of correspondence and administration - played in the vibrant medieval ...merchant city of Novgorod and other cities in the Russian Northwest.
Introduction. The process of Christianization of the Lazica, poorly presented in written sources, received an important source in the recently found inscriptions from the Machkhomeri fortress near ...Khobi. Analysis. The inscriptions were discovered during the excavations of a three-nave basilica, built in the 6th c. by a certain Gorgonios in honour of Holy Forty Martyrs of Sebaste. The next benefactor of the church was a certain Theonas, his wife and family. In the northern part of the basilica, there were also found fragments of two inscriptions, which contain the list of benefactors with their synodiai. The dedicants of the inscriptions were among others the carpenters/ builders of the church and their colleagues, who probably also formed a synodia. Results. Thus, we see in the 6th-c. Lazica a rare kind of religious community around a mighty person or institution – a synodia consisting mainly of lay people. The competition for the right to own objects inside the Machkhomeri Basilica shows that this church was the centre of attraction and pilgrimage in the region, perhaps thanks to the relics of the Martyrs of Sebaste.
Architectural inscriptions are a fascinating aspect of Islamic cultural heritage because of their rich and diverse historical contents and artistic merits. These inscriptions help us understand the ...advent of Islam and its gradual diffusion in Bengal, which eventually resulted in a Muslim majority region, making the Bengali Muslims the second largest linguistic group in the Islamic world.
This book is an interpretive study of the Arabic and Persian epigraphic texts of Bengal in the wider context of a rich epigraphic tradition in the Islamic world. While focusing on previously untapped sources, it takes a fresh look into the Islamic inscriptions of Bengal and examines the inner dynamics of the social, intellectual and religious transformations of this eastern region of South Asia. It explores many new inscriptions including Persian epigraphs that appeared immediately after the Muslim conquest of Bengal indicating an early introduction of Persian language in the region through a cultural interaction with Khurasan and Central Asia. In addition to deciphering and editing the epigraphic texts, the information derived from them has been analyzed to construct the political, administrative, social, religious and cultural scenario of the period.
The first survey of the Muslim inscriptions in India ever to be attempted on this scale, the book reveals the significance of epigraphy as a source for Islamic history and culture. As such, it will be of interest to students and scholars of Asian Studies, Asian History and Islamic Studies.
