Acornelian intaglio dating from the IInd century AD, found in the South of France, formerly in the collection of Sibyl Mertens-Schaffhausen (1797-1857), is known only by a cast in the dactylotheque ...published on the occasion of the sale of the collection. The figure of enthroned Saturn corresponds, as seen in the print, to the type of cultural figure of the temple on the Forum Romanum. Contrary to the model, the head is not veiled. It is an assimilation to the similar type of enthroned Jupiter. The inscription MYTHVNIM DD was clockwise engraved at a later date on the original. The first word of the inscription is a latinized Punic name signifying «gift of the gods». Mythun(il)im dono dedit (or dedit); it means that the intaglio was a gift by Mythun(il)im to another person.
Attempt has been made to study the treatability of printing ink wastewater generated from an Indian currency printing press using coagulation-flocculation process. Coagulant agents, viz. ferrous ...sulphate, ferric chloride, aluminium sulphate and polyaluminium chloride were studied to select the most suitable coagulant for effective treatment, and attain the optimum coagulant concentration. Cationic polyeletrolyte in conjunction with the most effective coagulant was also studied to assess its effect on floc settleability. Polyaluminium chloride (PAC) was found to be the most efficient coagulant, achieving removals of colour, suspended solids (SS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 95.9-96.5%, 96.5-97.0%, 61.3-65.8% and 54.8-61.8%, respectively at an optimum concentration of 1500 mg L super(-1). Other coagulants, viz. ferrous sulphate, ferric chloride and aluminium sulphate did not show substantial removals of colour, BOD and COD, except suspended solids in comparison to the performance of PAC. Cationic ploylectrolyte in combination with PAC at an optimum concentration of 1500 mg L super(-1) of PAC and 1.0 mg L super(-1) of polyelectrolyte further improved the removal efficiency of various parameters studied, in addition to improving the floc settling rate, and reduction in quantity of sludge generation. Effect of rapid mixing intensity expressed as mean temporal velocity gradient (G), and mixing time (t) on flocculation was also investigated. Rapid mixing at an impeller rotational speed (n) of 300 rpm and mixing time (t) of 60 sec indicated good floc formation, which resulted in achieving velocity gradient of 821 s super(-1), and was found to be an optimum combination. This was also indicated by relatively high settling velocity of sludge formed and low residual colour in the supernatant. However, slow mixing beyond 5 min, adopted after initial optimum rapid mixing, indicated negligible effect on flocculation.
The church of Santa Maria d Itria stands in the centre of Maracalagonis, not far from the church dedicated to the Beata Vergine Assunta. The absence of written sources does not allow a specific ...chronological placement of the building, posted by comparison to the 13th century. Inside the Church, divided into three naves by monolithic columns, the wooden roof with 25 decorated trusses, whose beams are supported by carved corbels with motifs of various kinds. The paper analyzes the history of studies and archival documents of restoration of wooden trusses and corbels, formerly attributed to the original but still complex chronological arrangement. It offers a critical reading of the writings published, supported by quantitative descriptive and graphic patterns divided by categories
Three sarcophagi (fig. 2) dated to the Roman Imperial Period were recently unearthed in Gemlik (ancient Kios) (fig. 1) in a rescue excavation conducted by Bursa Museum’s Directorate. Several small ...objects found in these sarcophagi, grave goods, were delivered to the Archaeological Museum of Bursa, while the sarcophagi are today in the garden of the Directorate of Technical Works (Fen İşleri Müdürlüğü) in Gemlik. The sarcophagi resemble each other in their iconography and stylistically. Upon the tabulae ansatae there are three inscriptions, two are on the façade of the chests of two of these sarcophagi, the other is on the long side of the lid of the third. Amongst the finds from the first sarcophagus was a gold coin dated to the reign of Valerianus I and Gallienus. An intaglio carrying a depiction of Isis and Sarapis was found in the second sarcophagus which was carved on behalf of Marcus Iulius Aelianus Iulianus for Kladaios, both his friend and doctor, and for his freedman Harmodios. The inscription on the lid of the third sarcophagus records the owner as Aurelius Numerius and that he was a councillor in the city, providing the first attestation of a βουλεύτης in Kios. The high penalty of 100,000 denarii for tomb violation is not commonly found in the inscriptions.
