Dialects are constantly changing, and due to increased mobility in more recent years, European dialects have 'levelled', making it difficult to distinguish a native of Reading from a native of ...London, or a native of Bonn from a native of Cologne. This comprehensive study brings together a team of leading scholars to explore all aspects of recent dialect change, in particular dialect convergence and divergence. Drawing on examples from a wide range of European countries - as well as areas where European languages have been transplanted - they examine a range of issues relating to dialect contact and isolation, and show how sociolinguistic conditions differ hugely between and within European countries. Each specially commissioned chapter is based on original research, giving an overview of work on that particular area and presenting case studies to illustrate the issues discussed. Dialect Change will be welcomed by all those interested in sociolinguistics, dialectology, the relevance of language variation to formal linguistic theories, and European languages.
Abstract
During President Carter’s visit to Warsaw in 1977, his interpreter into Polish, Steven Seymour, allegedly made
major mistakes. American journalists learned of these mistakes from their ...Polish colleagues and gloated over what they considered
erotic overtones in Seymour’s interpretation. There is much literature on this episode, but no author has yet consulted the actual
interpretation. I was able to obtain an archived audio recording of the entire episode from the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library
and Museum. In this article, I discuss Seymour’s choice of a sentence-by-sentence mode of interpretation and the problems inherent
in that mode, classify his errors and inaccuracies, and attempt to uncover the reasons for the exaggerated criticism from the
media and the interpreting community. Characteristically, the media paid no attention to the solemn, confident performance of
Seymour’s Polish colleague, who interpreted Edward Gierek’s speech into English. The episode is a good testimony to the role of
diplomatic interpreters, whose moment of glory only comes when they make a factual or imaginary mistake.

Language contact phenomena have been researched throughout the history of the discipline, but the intensity of the research has undoubtedly risen during the last decades due to growing globalization. ...This peer-reviewed volume presents twelve papers from the Second Conference on Language Contact in Times of Globalization (University of Groningen, June 2009) which deal with a wide range of topics, languages and contact situations. Five of them involve a Finno-Ugric language (Saami-Komi-Russian; Finnic-Baltic; Mordvin-Turkic; Estonian-German; Saami general), two a Slavic language (Slavic-Romance; Slavic general), two Germanic-Romance contact and three situations outside Europe (The Arabic World; Central Asia; South America). Methods range from field research and corpus analysis to historical linguistics, and both synchronic and diachronic approaches are used. This book offers an in-depth analysis of several features of spoken Indian English that are generally considered as 'typical', but have never before been studied empirically. Drawing on authentic ...spoken data from the International Corpus of English, Indian component, the book focuses on the domain of discourse organization and examines the form, function and distribution of invariant tags such as isn't it and no/na, non-initial existential there, focus markers only and itself, topicalization and left-dislocation. By focusing on multilingual speakers' interactions, the study demonstrates conclusively that spoken Indian English bears all the hallmarks of a vibrant contact language, testifying to a pan-South Asian 'grammar of culture' which becomes apparent in contact-induced language change in spoken Indian English. The book will be highly relevant for anyone interested in postcolonial varieties of English, contact linguistics, standardization, and discourse-pragmatic sentence structure.
Ce travail propose une révision de la vie de Marcos Fernández, maître de langue espagnole au xviie siècle lors de ses passages en France, aux Pays-Bas, en Allemagne et en Hollande. Son œuvre comprend ...des grammaires, des vocabulaires, des poèmes et des miscellanées, mais on s’arrêtera sur la version espagnole des dialogues de Philippe Garnier, publiée à Amsterdam en 1656 et à Strasbourg en 1659 à partir d’un original français-allemand-latin. Les Dialogues ou Gemmulae linguarum incluant la traduction de Fernández se situent dans le contexte historique des courants pédagogico-didactiques des xvie et xviie siècles. On analyse ici la partie espagnole de façon détaillée de façon à montrer la magnifique imitation de l’oralité que réalise l’auteur, dans laquelle on ne relève que quelques interférences avec le français.
Le français n’est pas une langue africaine. Mais il est devenu une grande langue de l’Afrique d’aujourd’hui. Il a pris, sur le continent noir, de si belles couleurs qu’il donne parfois à rêver d’une ...« Afrique latine » de langue française. Son enracinement sur le continent et dans les espaces créolophones environnants est une réalité indéniable. Cependant l’impact de la francophonie sur la vie quotidienne des populations paraît mitigé. Face à l’échec scolaire massif observé un peu partout, faute d’une maîtrise suffisante de la langue de scolarisation, en l’occurrence du français, il est impératif de trouver des solutions innovantes susceptibles de garantir la formation de citoyens bien dans leur peau et prêts à se lancer à la conquête du monde. La solution qui consiste à associer davantage les langues nationales à l’enseignement est l’une des plus réalistes et des plus responsables. L’école héritée de la colonisation, trop extravertie, ne répond plus aux besoins des États indépendants. Il est urgent de la réformer pour la refonder sur de nouvelles bases, avec de nouveaux paradigmes qui prennent mieux en compte la problématique du plurilinguisme et de la diversité culturelle. Les articles réunis dans ce livre s’intéressent à tous les secteurs de la vie collective. Ils décrivent avec rigueur les situations et les politiques linguistiques observées, analysent avec objectivité les modèles préconisés, expliquent avec minutie les résultats obtenus et les difficultés rencontrées. Enfin ils formulent des propositions susceptibles de contribuer, de manière innovante, à la résolution des problèmes posés. Trois mots-clés structurent le débat et servent de fil conducteur aux réflexions contenus dans le présent ouvrage : partenariat, convivialité et compétitivité. Ce livre est écrit pour faire réfléchir et pour faire agir. Il ne contient ni recettes magiques ni remèdes miracles valables en tous temps et en tous lieux. L’étude des relations interculturelles entre l’Afrique noire et le Brésil dans le cadre de la traite négrière transatlantique, nous a amené à nous intéresser à la singulière odyssée des Retornados ...Aguda du Bénin. Ce sont des esclaves émancipés revenus majoritairement de Bahia au lendemain de la révolte Malè (1835), dans les aires culturelles et géographiques de leurs ancêtres, celles de la Côte des Esclaves. Face au défi de réintégration dans une société qui les avait exclus au moins un siècle plutôt, ces "hommes nouveaux" ont développé d’ingénieux mécanismes de résistance et d’affirmation de soi, pour construire une aristocratie aux prestiges remarquables aux côtés des négriers portugais, brésiliens, anglais, français, hollandais, et danois installés sur cette côte de l’Afrique pour le commerce des esclaves. C’est à ce titre, et comme des éducateurs sociaux qu’ils ont éminemment contribué à la transformation socio-culturelle, économique et politique des aires d’accueil allant jusqu’à une profonde modification des us et coutumes locaux. Dans cette même logique, ils ont formé la première élite intellectuelle au service de la colonisation française qu’ils ont combattue par la suite jusqu’à la l’indépendance du Dahomey. Cette étude met en lumière les permanences et les mutations successives des vestiges de l’héritage socio-culturel, linguistique, politique et religieux des Aguda qui se poursuivent et se ressentent dans la société béninoise contemporaine. Les racines de ces apports afrobrésiliens sont si profondément enfouies dans les usages des Béninois contemporains au point que certains ont du mal à imaginer que des pratiques de leur quotidien qu’ils se sont appropriées et remodelées à leur goût au fil de générations, sont venues de l’autre côté de l’Atlantique.
In the quest of a study of the intercultural relations between sub-Saharan Africa and Brazil, we come to investigate on the particular odyssey of the Retornees Aguda in Benin. They are formers are slavers coming back home mainly from Bahia, following the Malè revolt (1835), in their former cultural and geographic area where their ancestors have been caught and sold as slaves, the Slave Coast. Meeting the challenge of their reintegration in a community where their ancestors were expelled, those “new people” used some resourceful resistant mechanisms, and a powerful self-assertion to build a distinguish aristocratic class together with the Portuguese, the Brazilian, the English, the French, the Danish and the Dutch slavers settled on that coast many years ago.It is on the crest of that high position in the society that they greatly took part in the socio-economic and cultural changes in those welcoming areas up to deep transfer in local habits and customs. In so doing, they have been the first intellectual elite serving the French colonial administration that they later opposed till the independence of the Dahomey colony. This survey brings into light the continuities as well as the remarkable changes on the remnants of the Aguda’s sociocultural, linguistic, politic and religious legacy which are deeply rooted in Beninese’s everyday life that some of them hardly guess that some daily usages come from the other side of the Atlantic Ocean.
In comparison to most visible forms of
linguistic interference such as loanwords or
integral borrowings, the categories of calque
and semantic loan are much less obvious
and difficult to detect since ...their effect is
limited to the meaning of the word and do
not introduce foreign signifiers into the
target language. In this study, we collate,
systematize and analyze a representative
sample of these two categories of loans from
French in contemporary Spanish. To carry
out the study, we drew on the main
lexicographical works in both languages,
along with various textual and documentation sources, among the most important
of which are the data bases of the Spanish
Language Academy.
Face à l'emprunt lexical ou intégral,
qui constitue la forme la plus perceptible
d'interférence linguistique, les catégories
de calque et d'emprunt sémantique sont
beaucoup moins évidentes et plus difficiles à repérer puisque elles ne concernent
que le signifié et n'entraînent pas l'introduction de signifiants étrangers dans la
langue emprunteuse. Ce travail réunit,
systématise et anal
yse un échantillon
représentatif et bien ancré dans l'espagnol
d'aujourd'hui de ces deux genres
d'emprunts d'origine française. Pour ce
faire, nous avons eu recours aux
principales oeuvres lexicographiques des
deux langues, ainsi qu'à différentes
sources textuelles et documentaires, notamment les bases de données de l'Académie espagnole de langue.
