Trunk strength plays a vital role in athletic performance, rehabilitation and general health, however, current assessment methods are expensive, non-portable or unreliable. This study aimed to ...investigate the within- and between-session reliability, variability, standard error of measurement and minimal detectable change (MDC) of trunk strength in the sagittal (flexion and extension) and frontal planes (left and right lateral flexion) using a fixed digital dynamometer. Eighteen participants (ten men and eight women) attended two sessions separated by 7 days. Participants were fitted with a trunk harness which was secured to an immovable base via a digital dynamometer. Three maximal voluntary isometric contractions were completed across four positions (prone, supine, left-side recumbent and right-side recumbent, respectively) on a glute-hamstring raise machine. All positions demonstrated excellent reliability and low variability within session (ICC: 0.95–0.98; CV: 5–7%) and between sessions (ICC: 0.98–0.99; CV: 4–6%), across all positions. The between-session MDC ranged from 8% (prone) to 13% (right-side recumbent), translating to absolute values between 2.9 and 3.2 kg across all positions. Maximal isometric force testing using a fixed digital dynamometer provides reliable measurements of multiplanar trunk strength, providing a practical method for use in clinical practice.

AF parameters and the maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) of hamstrings were assessed bilaterally comparing 20 patients with knee OA (ART) vs. controls (CON). AF was measured by a pneumatically driven device. Participants were instructed to maintain a static position despite an increasing load of the device. After reaching AFiso
, the hamstrings merged into eccentric action whereby the force increased further to the maximum (AF
). MVIC was recorded before and after AF trials. Mixed ANOVA was used to identify differences between and within ART and CON (comparing 1st and 2nd measured sides).

and the torque development per degree of yielding were significantly lower only for the more affected side of ART vs. CON (p ≤ 0.001). The percentage difference of AFiso
amounted to - 40%. For the less affected side it was - 24% (p = 0.219). MVIC and AF
were significantly lower for ART vs. CON for both sides (p ≤ 0.001). Differences of MVIC between ART vs. CON amounted to - 27% for the more, and - 30% for the less affected side; for AF
it was - 34% and - 32%, respectively.
The results suggest that strength deficits of hamstrings are present in patients with knee OA possibly attributable to nociception, generally lower physical activity/relief of lower extremities or fear-avoidance. However, the more affected side of OA patients seems to show further specific impairments regarding neuromuscular control reflected by the significantly reduced adaptive holding capacity and torque development during adaptive eccentric action. It is assumed that those parameters could reflect possible inhibitory nociceptive effects more sensitive than maximal strengths as MVIC and AF
. Their role should be further investigated to get more specific insights into these aspects of neuromuscular control in OA patients. The approach is relevant for diagnostics also in terms of severity and prevention.

The 3.3-Å cryo-EM structure of the 860-Å-diameter isometric mutant bacteriophage T4 capsid has been determined. WT T4 has a prolate capsid characterized by triangulation numbers (T numbers) Tend = 13 ...for end caps and Tmid = 20 for midsection. A mutation in the major capsid protein, gp23, produced T=13 icosahedral capsids. The capsid is stabilized by 660 copies of the outer capsid protein, Soc, which clamp adjacent gp23 hexamers. The occupancies of Soc molecules are proportional to the size of the angle between the planes of adjacent hexameric capsomers. The angle between adjacent hexameric capsomers is greatest around the fivefold vertices, where there is the largest deviation from a planar hexagonal array. Thus, the Soc molecules reinforce the structure where there is the greatest strain in the gp23 hexagonal lattice. Mutations that change the angles between adjacent capsomers affect the positions of the pentameric vertices, resulting in different triangulation numbers in bacteriophage T4. The analysis of the T4 mutant head assembly gives guidance to how other icosahedral viruses reproducibly assemble into capsids with a predetermined T number, although the influence of scaffolding proteins is also important.

37(12): 2397–2404, 2023—Although multiple lower-body strength capacities are required to change direction rapidly, there is limited knowledge about the relative importance of these factors. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between dynamic and isometric lower-body strength capacities and change of direction (COD) time in state-league netball players. Seventeen female athletes completed maximal isometric midthigh pull (IMTP), countermovement jump (CMJ), and modified 5-0-5 COD tests. Pearson's product moment correlations were used to determine the relationship between COD time and several IMTP and CMJ force-time curve characteristics. To assess the level of contribution of each force-time curve characteristic to COD time, multivariate-linear stepwise regression analyses were performed. A significant moderate correlation was noted between net relative peak force (PF) during the IMTP and COD time (

= 0.047), accounting for 23.8% of the variance in COD time. Moreover, concentric relative impulse during the CMJ was strongly correlated with COD time (

= 0.001), explaining 81.9% of the variance in COD time when combined with net relative braking PF in a stepwise regression. Based on these findings, female netball players who display higher concentric and isometric strength, as well as the ability to express higher impulses during the concentric phase of the CMJ, are likely to perform CODs faster. This may occur because COD requires the generation of greater propulsive forces, as well as reduced braking and contact times, along with greater isometric strength enabling effective repositioning of center of mass during COD tasks.

Sixteen professional rugby league players performed the 30-15 intermittent fitness test (IFT), 1.2-km time trial, 1 repetition maximum (RM) barbell back squat, isometric midthigh pull (IMTP), countermovement jump (CMJ), barbell squat jump (SJ), and ballistic bench press throw (BBP). Bivariate Pearson's correlations and linear regression were used to compare physical tests with peak match running intensities recorded by a portable Global Positioning System and represented by peak match velocity and acceleration, as well as peak 1-, 4-, 6-, and 8-minute instantaneous acceleration/deceleration periods of play. The results of this study highlight that not all generic tests of physical qualities are related to peak match running performance and only those with significant correlations are likely to be able to indicate how players may perform during match-play.

J Strength Cond Res 31(12): 3463-3473, 2017-Various ...thresholds have been used to identify the onset of contraction during isometric midthigh pull (IMTP); however, no agreed onset threshold exists for this assessment. The purpose of this study was to compare relative body weight (BW) and arbitrary onset thresholds to a criterion onset threshold 5 SDs of BW for IMTP force-time variables; force at each threshold, peak force, time-specific force values (100, 150, and 200 ms), and rate of force development (RFD) during 0-100, 0-150, 0-200 ms. Academy rugby league players (n = 9, age: 18.5 ± 0.4 years; height: 1.82 ± 0.09 m; mass: 91.2 ± 13.1 kg) performed 2 IMTP trials on a force platform sampling at 1,000 Hz. The neutral force-time data pool (18 trials) was analyzed with five different thresholds and compared with criterion threshold to determine any variance in force-time variables. Five SDs of BW were significantly lower than 10% BW and 75 N for threshold force which led to significantly greater time-specific force values at 100 and 150 ms and unacceptable limits of agreements (LOA) for all force-time variables. No significant differences (p > 0.05) were observed between 2.5% and 5 SDs of BW; and between 5% and 5 SDs of BW for threshold force and all force-time variables with acceptable LOA. The 5 SDs of BW and 2.5% BW onset thresholds consistently resulted in the lowest values for threshold force, time-specific force values, and RFD, attributed to a lower onset bias. Therefore, scientists and practitioners are recommended to use a 5 SD of BW onset threshold for time-specific force values and RFD for accurate data because it accounts for signal noise during the weighing period. Subsequently, there is greater certainty that the onset of contraction identifies a true meaningful change in force, in contrast to relative BW thresholds.

J Strength Cond Res 37(8): e462-e465, ...2023-The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between a maximal isometric strength test with a maximal dynamic strength test. The main outcome was to evaluate the isometric test to determine if it was a valid and reliable measurement tool for testing and monitoring of rowing athletes. Collegiate Division 1 rowers were tested on measures of maximal dynamic and isometric strength on 2 occasions separated by 14 days. Thirty-two female athletes (age: 19.9 11.0 years; height: 168.2 ± 7.6 cm; body mass: 71.3 as13.2 kg) participated in this study. Although the isometric test had greater reliability, both tests displayed good-to-excellent reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.79-0.92). Strong correlations were present for the relationship between isometric and dynamic strength tests ( r = 0.76-0.82, p = <0.001). The data indicate that the isometric row test is valid and reliable compared with dynamic testing and may be used in conjunction with dynamic testing in the evaluation of collegiate rowers.

J Strength Cond Res ...33(6)1551–1556, 2019—This study investigated the effect of preceding proagility sprints with maximal isometric squats to determine if postactivation potentiation (PAP) could be harnessed in change of direction speed. Sixteen elite under-17 rugby union players (age16 ± 0.41 years; body mass88.7 ± 12.1 kg; height1.83 ± 0.07 m) from an Aviva Premiership rugby club were tested. Subjects performed a change of direction specific warm-up, followed by 2 baseline proagility tests. After 10-minute recovery, 3 × 3-second maximal isometric squats with a 2-minute recovery between sets were completed as a conditioning activity (CA) on a force plate where peak force and mean rate of force development over 300 milliseconds were measured. The proagility test was repeated at set time intervals of 1, 3, 5, and 7 minutes after the CA. Overall proagility times were significantly slower (p < 0.05) at 1 minute post-CA compared with the baseline (3.3%), with no significant differences occurring at 3, 5, or 7 minutes post-CA. Therefore, it appears that performing multiple sets of maximal isometric squats do not enhance proagility performance.

J Strength Cond Res 36(5): 1191-1199, 2022-This study aimed to investigate whether the use of short-duration (SHORT) isometric midthigh pull (IMTP) trials resulted in greater reliability and magnitude of time-dependent force-time characteristics than traditionally performed IMTP trials (TRAD). Fourteen subjects with >6 months' training experience with the power clean volunteered to take part in the study. Subjects performed five ∼1-second IMTP trials (SHORT) and five 5-second IMTP trials (TRAD). SHORT resulted in substantially more reliable rate of force development (RFD) measures (intraclass correlation coefficient ICC = 0.97-0.99; coefficient of variation CV = 2.6-7.0%), particularly during time bands from force-onset to 150 ms, compared with TRAD when trials were selected for analysis based on peak force (ICC = 0.66-0.83; CV = 14.1-38.5%). Selecting TRAD trials based on RFD0-200 resulted in similar reliability compared with SHORT of those same epochs (ICC = 0.97-0.99; CV = 2.5-7.8%). Furthermore, SHORT resulted in significantly greater force at specific time points, RFD, and impulse compared with TRAD trials (p = 0.001-0.033; g = -0.16 to -0.66). Based on these results, strength and conditioning professionals should use specific testing protocols (i.e., TRAD and SHORT) depending on the component of an athlete's force-generating capacity that they wish to assess and remain aware of the effect analysis choices they have on the reliability of IMTP force-time characteristics.
This study aimed to compare the post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE) induced by isometric and isotonic exercise on vertical jump performance.
18 healthy trained men (25.8±2.7 years; ...78.4±8.2 kg; 175.7±6.1 cm; 25.4±1.8 BMI; 126.72±10.8 kg squat 1-RM) volunteered for this study. They randomly performed two different PAPE protocols: Isotonic squats (ISOTS), which consisted of 2 sets of 3 repetitions at 75% of one-maximum repetition (1-RM); and isometric squats (ISOMS), which consisted of 2 sets of 4 seconds of submaximal (75% of 1-RM) isometric contraction at 90°-knee flexion. Countermovement jump (CMJ) height was tested at baseline and 4 minutes after each conditioning set.
CMJ height significantly increased after set 1 in both PAPE protocols (ISOMS: p <0.001; ES = 0.34; ISOTS: p <0.001; ES = 0.24), with respect to the baseline jump. However, after set 2 no significant changes in CMJ height were observed for any protocol (ISOMS: p = 0.162; ES = 0.11; ISOTS: p = 0.976; ES = 0.06). No significant differences (p>0.05) were found between both isometric and isotonic exercise conditions.
Despite both protocols showed similar PAPE effects on CMJ height after set 1, none of the protocols demonstrated greater efficacy in increasing subsequent performance in healthy trained men.
