The novel coronavirus and associated Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is rapidly spreading throughout the world, with robust growth in the United States. Its drastic impact on the global ...population and international health care is swift, evolving, and unpredictable. The effects on orthopaedic surgery departments are predominantly indirect, with widespread cessation of all nonessential orthopaedic care. Although this is vital to the system-sustaining measures of isolation and resource reallocation, there is profound detriment to orthopaedic training programs.
In the face of new pressures on the finite timeline on an orthopaedic residency, the Emory University School of Medicine Department of Orthopaedics has devised a 5-pronged strategy based on the following: (1) patient and provider safety, (2) uninterrupted necessary care, (3) system sustainability, (4) adaptability, and (5) preservation of vital leadership structures.
Our 5 tenants support a 2-team system, whereby the residents are divided into cycling "active-duty" and "working remotely" factions. In observation of the potential incubation period of viral symptoms, phase transitions occur every 2 weeks with strict adherence to team assignments. Intrateam redundancy can accommodate potential illness to ensure a stable unit of able residents. Active duty residents participate in in-person surgical encounters and virtual ambulatory encounters, whereas remotely working residents participate in daily video-conferenced faculty-lead, case-based didactics and pursue academic investigation, grant writing, and quality improvement projects. To sustain this, faculty and administrative 2-team systems are also in place to protect the leadership and decision-making components of the department.
The novel coronavirus has decimated the United States healthcare system, with an unpredictable duration, magnitude, and variability. As collateral damage, orthopaedic residencies are faced with new challenges to provide care and educate residents in the face of safety, resource redistribution, and erosion of classic learning opportunities. Our adaptive approach aims to be a generalizable tactic to optimize our current landscape.
Queer communal kinship is a long overdue replacement for the naturalized model of the modern western family; a post-capitalist regime of social reproduction, aiming for redistributive justice through ...the politics of pleasure; a timely proposal for the demise of possessive and accumulative ideology, and the upsurge of a counter-imaginary; a manifesto for the collectivization of reproductive labor; an ethical conceptual framework for a joyful cultural shift: Queer Communal Kinship Now! This manifesto pushes for a radical redefinition of love, intimacy, and care in support of a much needed redistributive justice movement. This project must be accompanied by an exit from heteronormativity as a regime of relational scarcity, as well as from the metaphysics of private property which is at the heart of our economies and by extension of our social ecologies -- at odds with much of life on this planet. Queer Communal Kinship Now! examines the role of western normative family ideals in the mechanisms of the preservation and intensification of this status quo, as well as potential approaches to guide us out of this unsavory situation. Both handbook and personal narrative, Queer Communal Kinship Now! discusses the conceptual leaps required to emancipate ourselves from the conventional western family model, towards different regimes of bonding, care, and attention, to allow us to imagine a different type of social reality driven by queer and feminist ethical concerns. Directed to those interested in building queer families and wondering how not to repeat the mistakes of their parents, Queer Communal Kinship Now! offers radical ways of rethinking being together.
As conspiracy theories about COVID-19 take root in the United States, understanding the psychological foundations of conspiracy beliefs is increasingly critical. Our research shows that beliefs in ...two popular variants of COVID-19 conspiracy theory are the joint product of the psychological predispositions 1) to reject information coming from experts and other authority figures and 2) to view major events as the product of conspiracies, as well as partisan and ideological motivations. The psychological foundations of conspiracy beliefs have implications for the development of strategies designed to curtail their negative consequences.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The purpose of the study was to establish how funding from the three forms of private capital - namely, (i) angel investors, (ii) venture capital, and (iii) private equity - can ...support the growth of small to medium enterprises (SMEs) in emerging markets, based on insight from publications in the two decades from 2001 to 2020 DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: A systematic review of the existing literature on angel investors, venture capital, and private equity was conducted, and relevant publications from the period 2001 to 2020 were selected using a Scopus search. A total of 84 publications were identified, and these were filtered further, leaving 25 publications that were analysed using content analysis FINDINGS: The review established that SMEs faced numerous challenges in sourcing and accessing funding for their ventures and that this affected their growth and, to some extent, their survival. Private capital was shown to play a significant role in SME growth, and it goes beyond just providing finance but extends to the provision of other operational support services, and improvement of corporate governance, including engagements with governments to influence SME policy RECOMMENDATIONS/VALUE: The review contributes to the body of knowledge by providing (i) an understanding of SME financing challenges, (ii) insight into the role played by private capital to grow SMEs and to address their financing challenges, (iii) a theoretical framework on SME private capital financing that SMEs could use to identify suitable forms of financing; and (iv) a funding pitching guide MANAGERIAL IMPLICATIONS: The review provides insight for entrepreneurs and/or SME owners/managers into the types of private capital and the respective requirements to pitch for funding. The review also presents a theoretical framework on SME private capital financing that frames the sources of financing for the various growth stages that SMEs go through and a funding pitching guide JEL CLASSIFICATIONS: G23, G24
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of shopper motivation on shopping apathy among South African consumers. The study also interrogated the moderating role ...of time spent on retail shopping. The purpose was to determine if time spent mediates the effect of shopper motivation on shopper apathy DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The study adopted a survey research method, with a questionnaire instrument utilised for data collection. The target population of this study consisted of shoppers at one of the malls in the town of Thohoyandou in Venda. A survey was conducted according to the convenience sampling approach, and 250 respondents were targeted. Data analysis was processed with the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), version 27 for Windows. The Cronbach alpha was used to determine if the items used to test the reliability of the variables of store attributes were consistent FINDINGS: The findings of the study revealed that convenience, shopping enjoyment and price consciousness influence shopper apathy. The time spent was found to have a mediation effect on the influence that shopper motivation has on shopper apathy RECOMMENDATIONS/VALUE: The study recommended that retailers should identify shopper types and formulate appropriate strategies to motivate consumers to spend more time in retail stores MANAGERIAL IMPLICATIONS: The findings of this study could assist retail managers in managing shopper apathy. Retailers will also have a better understanding of shoppers' motivation to shop at their stores JEL CLASSIFICATION: E21, M31
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Marketing remains a significant factor for business success. One of the most popular means of creating and increasing awareness of a business's products or services, and ...ultimately increasing business success, is advertising. Throughout the years, the way in which businesses advertise and the platforms on which they advertise have evolved. While print media is not a new concept, it remains a popular and effective medium of advertising. However, there is uncertainty regarding the effectiveness of advertisements placed in the different types of print media. Given that Generation Y students are perceived to be the future big spenders, it is important to understand which print media are most effective in targeting these consumers, so that businesses can alter their advertising campaigns to reach this market more effectively. The purpose of this study is to determine whether differences exist in the perceived informativeness, entertainment, irritation, credibility and value of advertisements placed in the different types of print media DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The study followed a quantitative research approach, using a descriptive research design. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to 500 Generation Y students registered at two universities in Gauteng, South Africa. The statistical analysis included frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, reliability analysis and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA FINDINGS: The findings of the study revealed that advertisements in newspapers, magazines and flyers are similar in terms of their informativeness, credibility, irritation and value; however, advertisements in magazines are perceived as more entertaining than flyer advertisements RECOMMENDATIONS/VALUE: When targeting Generation Y consumers, it is recommended that marketers use print media advertising platforms that are entertaining in addition to being informative and credible, such as magazines MANAGERIAL IMPLICATIONS: To ensure successful advertising campaigns, marketers require insight into the most effective and valued advertising platforms and an understanding of the similarities and differences between them JEL CLASSIFICATION: M37, M31, M30
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: By including advertisements in VLEs, both academically and commercially, HEIs can potentially reduce the significant financial costs associated with the implementation, ...utilisation and maintenance required for their chosen VLEs, without decreasing the value of the service provided, while simultaneously providing a source of long-term sustainable revenue for HEIs. Consequently, the primary objective of this study was to determine whether gender differences exist among students' attitudes towards the use of a VLE with the presence of advertisements at a South African university of technology DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The sampling frame for this study comprised a public registered South African university of technology. A non-probability convenience sample of 379 students was used. A hand-delivered, self-administered questionnaire was distributed to full-time students during class time at the chosen HEI FINDINGS: There was a statistically significant difference found between male and female students at the chosen South African university of technology in terms of the perceived usefulness of VLEs. There is no statistically significant difference between male and female students' self-efficacy, technology experience, satisfaction, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, attitudes towards the use of a vLe without the presence of advertisements and attitudes towards the use of a VLE with the presence of advertisements RECOMMENDATIONS/VALUE: Not only do VLEs, being web-based, provide a means for HEIs to generate long-term revenue, but they have the capacity to become open digital platforms for marketers to take advantage of. With the use of these VLEs, marketers may find it easier to reach their target audiences in a more focused approach when placing advertisements on this platform, while HEIs can use the income generated to cover the cost of any technological advancements that may be required, without having to increase student fees MANAGERIAL IMPLICATIONS: The management of HEIs need to decide if they would like to consider this means of revenue generation and see if it will indeed be as beneficial as what the theory suggests. In order to avoid any potential financial risks associated with the implementation of advertisements on VLEs, HEIs can engage in trial run projects with a willing organisation to analyse the viability of this proposed initiative JEL CLASSIFICATION: M31, M37
The 2020 U.S. Presidential Election saw an unprecedented number of false claims alleging election fraud and arguing that Donald Trump was the actual winner of the election. Here we report a survey ...exploring belief in these false claims that was conducted three days after Biden was declared the winner. We find that a majority of Trump voters in our sample – particularly those who were more politically knowledgeable and more closely following election news – falsely believed that election fraud was widespread, and that Trump won the election. Thus, false beliefs about the election are not merely a fringe phenomenon. We also find that Trump conceding or losing his legal challenges would likely lead a majority of Trump voters to accept Biden’s victory as legitimate, although 40% said they would continue to view Biden as illegitimate regardless. Finally, we found that levels of partisan spite and endorsement of violence were equivalent between Trump and Biden voters.
While it has become fashionable in the arena of international health to think about health systems, the theoretical underpinning of Niklas Luhmann's vast and productive theory has been given too ...little consideration in the field. It is rich in concepts that can facilitate a fuller understanding of what health systems are. João Costa applies these concepts and shows the analytical possibilities they open up. He argues concisely how Luhmann's Social Systems Theory offers an integrated theoretical body as well as a consistent articulation of concepts that can lay the groundwork for a vastly improved health systems thinking.
Mothering Performance is a combination of scholarly essays and creative responses which focus on maternal performance and its applications from a variety of interdisciplinary perspectives. This ...collection extends the concept and action of ‘performance’ and connects it to the idea of ‘mothering’ as activity. Mothering, as a form of doing, is a site of never-ending political and personal production; it is situated in a specific place, and it is undertaken by specific bodies, marked by experience and context. The authors explore the potential of a maternal sensibility to move us towards maternal action that is explicitly political, ethical, and in relation to our others. Presented in three sections, Exchange, Practice, and Solidarity, the book includes international contributions from scholars and artists covering topics including ecology, migration, race, class, history, incarceration, mental health, domestic violence, intergenerational exchange, childcare, and peacebuilding. The collection gathers diverse maternal performance practices and methodologies which address aesthetics, dramaturgy, activism, pregnancy, everyday mothering, and menopause. The book is a great read for artists, maternal health and care professionals, and scholars. Researchers with an interest in feminist performance and motherhood, within the disciplines of performance studies, maternal studies, and women’s studies, and all those who wish to gain a deeper understanding of maternal experience, will find much of interest.
