The use of "Caring Cards" is a unique innovation, which builds on reliable Lean processes. It adds the way we emotionally care for people to a Lean methodology. This article describes how the ...foundational constructs of nursing theory are paired with aspects of universal fall precautions. In a pilot prioritizing Caring Cards, conversations between leaders and staff provide a way for the nurse to describe his or her critical thinking about fall prevention that is individualized to a patient. Leaders collect information on barriers to care and demonstrate follow-up actions to staff members who raise concerns. The system allows for structured leader and staff interactions that are coaching and mentoring in nature. These support an environment where nurses care for patients, while leaders also care for staff. By partnering Lean methodology with the heart of nursing, patient care can be improved. The pilot project utilizing this methodology was performed on a neurological unit. It resulted in a dramatic reduction in falls. The unassisted patient fall rate per 1000 patient-days dropped from 11.60 to 5.81 falls, a 50% reduction.
In the face of the migration crisis in Europe in 2015, discussions on refugees and emigrants who live in Poland have been dominated by stereotypes and negative images presented by the media, and the ...division into supporters and opponents of the “Others” have also become highly visible in schools. The lack of topics in the field of global education and of knowledge about the current situation of African countries has contributed to the increase in xenophobic attitudes among pupils, and to all sorts of manifestations of verbal and physical violence motivated by prejudices against people who stand out because of their appearance or origin. The Encountering the Other project, which has been run by the Artykuł 25 Foundation and the National Museum in Szczecin since 2014, attempts to reply to the lack in Poland of a social basis of sensitivity, respect and solidarity with people of different geographical and cultural backgrounds. Its main aim is to allow primary, middle and secondary school pupils to acquire knowledge about the Countries of the Global South, which may encourage them to revise their attitudes. The basis of the project is classes in school which are based on our own script prepared from a lecture by Ryszard Kapuściński, Encountering the Other: the challenge for the 21st century, which he gave upon receiving the title of doctor honoris causa from the Jagiellonian University. The National Museum in Szczecin plays an important role in the project. It runs classes for students which show them the old art and culture of West-African countries and their influence on European art, but also presents works by contemporary artists from Benin, Nigeria and the Republic of South Africa. As part of the Week of Global Education, the museum presents documentaries for children and teens from the Docs Against Gravity Festival, and there are workshops using the kamishibai theatre and discussions on mutual understanding and global interdependence. The project is complemented by a conference targeted at teachers and representatives of organisations working with children and teens, whose main aim is to provide knowledge on the contemporary culture and art of African countries, and to show good practices for counteracting discrimination and violence motivated by prejudice. The Encountering the Other project aims to counteract prejudice and stereotypes, to show a different image of the Countries of the Global South, to convince children, teenagers and teachers to make their social attitudes more responsible, which would be of key importance on shaping trends today or in the future, and to incorporate global issues into mainstream discussions.
In this book, the author has adapted 25 folktales from across Asia for whole classroom use. Every student in the class will participate in telling these tales. The number of students in the class ...divides the stories. Using large poster board students illustrate their portion of the story and then present the story in grade level concerts. Harkening back to the itinerant Japanese story tellers who told stories from illustrated cards slid into slots in wooden stages built on the back of their bicycles, these stories will delight and entice children in grades 2-6 to participate in their own story fest. Caldecott award winning author/illustrator Allen Say has a new picture book, The Kamishibai Man that will aide students in their understanding of this art form. This book will include an introductory chapter describing in detail the methods to use in coaching students in the art of Kamishibai Story Theater, tips on rehearsing, detailed discussion and background of the Kamishibai processes and how to coordinate grade level story presentations. Reproducible tales can be distributed to each member of the class as an aide in creating their illustrations. Spot illustrations for each tale give students an idea of the flavor of their drawings for that story.
Marie S. Curie is one of the scientific legends of the 20th century. However, it is not well-known that she was a great science educator. She taught her original science lessons that is recorded in ...“Leçons de Marie Curie” by Isabelle Chavannes, to approximately ten children aged 9~13 from 1907 to 1908. It demonstrates how she was an innovative science educator, and facilitated young students to learn successfully. In her lessons, attention was carefully paid to the students understanding the principles and concept behind phenomena. It is surprising how easily she gave explanations of difficult concepts, principles and theorems to the students. The experiments were not just for demonstration. Without principles experiments are worth nothing.I have devoted to elucidate her methodologies of science education based on the records in “Leçons de Marie Curie”, and tried to revive them. I will also report the science show programs with KAMISHIBAI (the Japanese story telling with pictures) to stimulate young girls for STEM since 2002.I advocate Marie Curie teaching method by adapting modern devices for extracurricular activities in science at school. As Michael Faraday’s The Chemical History of a Candle , Marie Curie’s “Leçons de Marie Curie” is the Science Education Heritage.
Kamishibai is a kind of popular storytelling style in Japan. It is pointed out that children themselves author and perform kamishibai is of educational significance. However, there are few attempts ...due to difficulty of authoring kamishibai by themselves without any helps. We developed a digital kami-shibai system and carried out a workshop for the evaluation. In this workshop, children were easily able to author and perform digital kamishibai by themselves, and various works were created. Furthermore, communications among participants were promoted through the workshop. Evaluation results showed that proposed system achieved the educational effects of kami-shibai for children in an easier way with aid of computers.
The first in-depth scholarly study in English of the Japanese performance medium kamishibai, Sharalyn Orbaugh's Propaganda Performed illuminates the vibrant street culture of 1930s Japan as well as ...the visual and narrative rhetoric of Japanese propaganda in World War II.
Many medical accidents and incidents occurred due to communication errors. To avoid such incidents, in this paper, we propose a system for determining communication errors. Especially, we propose a ...model that can be applied to multi-layered or chained situations. First, we provide an overview of communication errors in nursing activities. Then we describe the warp and woof model for nursing task that was proposed by Harada and considers multi-layered or chained situations. Next we describe a system for determining communication errors based on the warp and woof model for nursing task. The system is capable of generating nursing activity diagrams semi-automatically and compiles necessary nursing activities. We also propose a prototype tagging of the nursing corpus for an effective generation of the diagrams. Then we combine the diagram generation with the Kamishibai KeyGraph to determine possible points of the hidden or potential factors of communication errors.
