ere for the first time, the various French treatments of Didos tragic story in both drama and music, most of which are little known today are brought together, examined, compared, and evaluated. In ...Virgils Aeneid, the evocation of Didos great and fateful passion had an impact that has continued to reverberate over two millennia. Among the vast array of artistic creations that Dido has inspired are a number of French tragedies and musical works from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries. This study embraces different genres and spans several centuries, demonstrates the commonalities between the works, and reveals the individuality and uniqueness of each interpretation. This study first looks at the broader European context before the French dramas, cantatas and operas are each analyzed in detail. What emerges is that there is indeed a myriad of ways to tell and interpret a story.
Lawrence Bennett provides a comprehensive study of the rich repertoire of accompanied vocal chamber music that entertained the imperial family in Vienna and their guests throughout the 17th and early ...18th centuries. The cantata became a form of elite entertainment composed to amuse listeners during banquets or pay homage to members of the royal family during special occasions. Concentrating on Baroque cantatas composed in the Habsburg court, Bennett draws extensively on primary source material to explore the stylistic changes that occurred within the genre in the generations before Haydn and Mozart.
Expanding in part on earlier studies of the St. John Passion and the principle of “tonal allegory” in Bach's vocal music as a whole, this book investigates the musico‐theological character of the ...passion and the sequence of cantatas that followed its second performance in 1725. Citing many Lutheran authors from the 16th to the 18th century (with particular reference to August Hermann Francke and Johann Jacob Rambach), it attempts to show how Bach responded to the qualities that theologians have long recognized as characteristic of John, and that are now generally described as “Johannine.” Part One sets forth the research “problems” involved in the revisions to and versions of the passion as well as those surrounding the breaking off of the chorale cantata cycle just before Easter 1725 and the composition of the so‐called “Ziegler” cantatas. In addition it lays the conceptual groundwork for Part Two (a five‐chapter study of the St. John Passion) and Part Three (a study of the Spring 1725 cantatas). The book argues that in this unique series of compositions Bach reveals a thoroughgoing understanding of John's special qualities and devises special means of translating them into music.
