In light of emerging evidence suggesting that the affective quality of parent-child relationships may relate to individual differences in young children's executive functioning (EF) skills, the aim ...of this study was to investigate the prospective associations between attachment security in toddlerhood and children's EF skills in kindergarten. Mother-child dyads (N = 105) participated in 2 toddlerhood visits in their homes, when children were 15 months and 2 years of age. Mother-child attachment security was assessed with the Attachment Q-Sort during both these visits. When children were in kindergarten (ages 5-6), they were administered a battery of EF tasks, and their teachers completed the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function to assess children's EF problems. The results indicated that kindergarteners who were more securely attached to their mothers in toddlerhood showed better performance on all EF tasks, and were considered by their teachers to present fewer EF problems in everyday school situations. These results held above family socioeconomic status (SES) and child age, sex, and general cognitive functioning. The fact that early attachment security uniquely predicted both teacher reports and children's objective EF task performance suggests that parent-child attachment may be a promising factor to consider in the continuing search for the social antecedents of young children's EF.
Background/Aim: Discussion about the necessity of sunscreen usage in kindergartens often arise, yet there is a notable gap in knowledge regarding the extent of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure in ...children, particularly those aged 3-6 years. This study aimed to quantify the UVR exposure in Danish children aged 3-6 years on a typical summer day, differentiating between clear-sky and lightly overcast conditions, utilizing personal UVR dosimeters. Patients and Methods: Participants included children from two distinct types of kindergartens – a traditional Danish kindergarten with a playground (n=20) and an outdoor kindergarten where children spend the entire day in a forest setting (n=17). Personal wristborne dosimeters were worn by the children, and their clothing coverage was recorded between 9-11 am, 11 am-1 pm, and 1-3 pm. Results: On a clear summer day, children from the outdoor kindergarten received 2.3 standard erythema dose (SED) (range=0.8-3.6), constituting 7.3% of ambient UVR. This was significantly higher than the 1.0 SED (0.4-1.8) received by children from the traditional kindergarten (3.4% of ambient), p=0.0000016. Also, on lightly overcast days, the outdoor kindergarten children received significantly more UVR (1.4 SED, 0.6-2.1, 5.7% of ambient) compared to traditional kindergarten children (0.9 SED, 0.2-1.6, 3.9% of ambient), p=0.0065. Notably, the outdoor kindergarten children wore significantly more clothing than the children in the traditional kindergarten. Conclusion: Children in both types of kindergartens receive relatively high doses of UVR in localized areas. This highlights the importance of sunscreen application during kindergarten hours.
The problem faced by PAUD teachers is that they are not ready for an independent curriculum policy that regulates education in Indonesia, especially in PAUD. Therefore, the purpose of this study is ...to help early childhood teachers implement the independent curriculum and deal with the policies in it. The method used a qualitative descriptive method, regarding real conditions and data that becomes information for researchers. This research was carried out at Pluz Az Zahra Pakal Islamic Kindergarten Surabaya on May 16, 17 and 18, 2023, through interviews and observations of the principal, curriculum representative, and all teachers. The results of this study indicate that the readiness carried out by the Pluz Az Zahra Islamic Kindergarten teacher in implementing the independent curriculum is quite ready, as evidenced by the ability and knowledge regarding the independent curriculum in the independent part. The impact of implementing an independent curriculum at the Pluz Az Zahra Islamic Kindergarten is that the learning process can be achieved and modified according to needs
Inquiry-based learning is a pedagogical approach that empowers learners to actively construct knowledge by engaging in problem-solving, critical thinking, questioning, and hands-on experiences. The ...inquiry-based approach in science emphasizes learners' active role in creating their understanding of the natural world. This review critically examines the application and impact of inquiry-based science approaches in kindergarten education. Through a thorough analysis of 16 research articles, the study shed light on different aspects of inquiry-based learning, including subject areas, participants, methodologies, types of inquiry-based approaches, theoretical frameworks, and impacts on learning outcomes. Findings show a predominant focus on early years’ science, with kindergarten children being the primary participants. The use of qualitative research methods shows a trend toward a comprehensive understanding of the issue. The study underscore the significance of using inquiry-based learning approach in kindergarten education and offers helpful information for teachers, decision-makers, and researchers. It also emphasizes the need for further empirical studies, particularly those addressing instructional models, challenges faced in the classroom to execute inquiry-based learning, and longitudinal studies to evaluate the long-term impacts of inquiry-based science education on kindergarten children performance.
We examined whether kindergarten teachers' ratings of children's prosocial skills, an indicator of noncognitive ability at school entry, predict key adolescent and adult outcomes. Our goal was to ...determine unique associations over and above other important child, family, and contextual characteristics.
Data came from the Fast Track study of low-socioeconomic status neighborhoods in 3 cities and 1 rural setting. We assessed associations between measured outcomes in kindergarten and outcomes 13 to 19 years later (1991-2000). Models included numerous control variables representing characteristics of the child, family, and context, enabling us to explore the unique contributions among predictors.
We found statistically significant associations between measured social-emotional skills in kindergarten and key young adult outcomes across multiple domains of education, employment, criminal activity, substance use, and mental health.
A kindergarten measure of social-emotional skills may be useful for assessing whether children are at risk for deficits in noncognitive skills later in life and, thus, help identify those in need of early intervention. These results demonstrate the relevance of noncognitive skills in development for personal and public health outcomes.
