Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to identify and explain the role of individual learning and development in acquiring tacit knowledge in the context of the inexorable and intense continuous ...change (technological and otherwise) that characterizes our society today, and also to investigate the software (SW) sector, which is at the core of contemporary continuous change and is a paradigm of effective and intrinsic knowledge sharing (KS). This makes the SW sector unique and different from others where KS is so hard to implement.
Design/methodology/approach
The study employed an inductive qualitative approach based on a multi-case study approach, composed of three successful SW companies in China. These companies are representative of the fabric of the sector, namely a small- and medium-sized enterprise, a large private company and a large state-owned enterprise. The fieldwork included 44 participants who were interviewed using a semi-structured script. The interview data were coded and interpreted following the Straussian grounded theory pattern of open coding, axial coding and selective coding. The process of interviewing was stopped when theoretical saturation was achieved after a careful process of theoretical sampling.
Findings
The findings of this research suggest that individual learning and development are deemed to be the fundamental feature for professional success and survival in the continuously changing environment of the SW industry today. However, individual learning was described by the participants as much more than a mere individual process. It involves a collective and participatory effort within the organization and the sector as a whole, and a KS process that transcends organizational, cultural and national borders. Individuals in particular are mostly motivated by the pressing need to face and adapt to the dynamic and changeable environments of today’s digital society that is led by the sector. Software practitioners are continuously in need of learning, refreshing and accumulating tacit knowledge, partly because it is required by their companies, but also due to a sound awareness of continuous technical and technological changes that seem only to increase with the advances of information technology. This led to a clear theoretical understanding that the continuous change that faces the sector has led to individual acquisition of culture and somatic knowledge that in turn lay the foundation for not only the awareness of the need for continuous individual professional development but also for the creation of habitus related to KS and continuous learning.
Originality/value
The study reported in this paper shows that there is a theoretical link between the existence of conducive organizational and sector-wide somatic and cultural knowledge, and the success of KS practices that lead to individual learning and development. Therefore, the theory proposed suggests that somatic and cultural knowledge are crucial drivers for the creation of habitus of individual tacit knowledge acquisition. The paper further proposes a habitus-driven individual development (HDID) Theoretical Model that can be of use to both academics and practitioners interested in fostering and developing processes of KS and individual development in knowledge-intensive organizations.
Purpose
Given the important role of frugal innovation for firms in the developing and emerging countries, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of transformational leadership (TL) on ...frugal innovation through the mediating roles of tacit and explicit knowledge sharing.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper used a quantitative research method and structural equation modeling to test the relationship among the latent factors based on a sample of 339 participants from 120 Vietnamese firms.
Findings
Findings reveal the significant impacts of TL on aspects of frugal innovation, namely, frugal functionality, frugal cost and frugal ecosystem. Moreover, the paper highlights the mediating roles of tacit and explicit knowledge sharing (KS) in the relationship between TL and frugal innovation in terms of frugal functionality and frugal cost.
Research limitations/implications
To bring a deeper understanding of the benefits and important role of knowledge resources, future research should investigate the potential mediating mechanisms of knowledge management processes in the relationship between specific leadership styles and frugal innovation.
Practical implications
The paper provides a valuable understanding and novel approach for managers and directors of firms in developing and emerging countries to improve their firms’ frugal innovation capability through leadership practice and knowledge resources.
Originality/value
This study contributes to bridging research gaps in the literature and advances the insights of how TL directly and indirectly fosters frugal innovation via mediating roles of tacit and explicit KS.
Knowledge format is a construct for information storing, accumulating, transmitting. Text and discourse are studied as main knowledge formats. Previous studies have found the literary text is defined ...as a product of writer’s speech-thinking activity. Discourse is interpreted as a text immersed in a communicative situation. The construction specific features of text and discourse are revealed through their modeling as an objective way of knowledge formats architectonics visualising. Literary text is considered in the form of conceptual domain as a set of literary concepts wich are correlated with writer’s text world. There are two types of writer’s text world models such as monomodel and polymodel. It is proved that monomodel text world is the plot-thematic unity of all literary conceptual domain which the writer creates. The polymodel text world consists of the plot-thematic correlation of literary dominant concepts formed according to different themes. Both monomodel and polymodel text worlds are the base for literary discourse forming. Monomodel text world is the base for monomodel literary discourse. Polymodel text world is the base for polymodel one’s. The research of text and discourse models of knowledge formats is the optimal interpretative way to discover the patterns of knowledge existence.
The paper aims to propose theoretical framework for knowledge-driven innovation and justify it empirically using database of 110 Russian companies. The study utilizes multidisciplinary approach and ...develops theoretical framework in the intersection of knowledge-based theory of a firm, the concept of learning organization, the concept of intellectual capital and the concept of self-development and self-organizational systems. The partial least square was applied for modelling the impact of the flexible structure, knowledge culture, transformational leadership on proactive employee behavior that in turn influences knowledge resources and organizational learning followed by company’s innovation. The study confirmed the key role of proactive behavior in knowledge-driven innovation. Findings revealed the highest impact of transformational leadership on employee behavior and innovation, as well as positive and significant impact of knowledge culture and indirect effect of flexible structure.

The purpose of the article is to reveal the integrative integrity of cognitive-logical and emotional-figurative mechanisms of cognition based on the relationship between the perceptions of the procedural deployment of educational material with the patterns in the presentation of a simultaneous image in the process of semantic disclosure of educational information. The cognitive paradigm is positioned as a methodological basis for the study, based on the appeal to methods, types and technologies of information processing by a person in order to create his own system of knowledge of the world with access to the generation of knowledge. The authors emphasize the importance of using the mechanisms of art in the process of emotionally figurative interpretation of scientific knowledge associated with the hermeneutic direction, according to which it is necessary to prepare students for perception, adjust them to experience and empathy, which contribute to the assimilation of scientific knowledge not reproductively, but constructively, creatively. In the process of experimental work, diagnostics of the dominant perceptual modality and imagination were used in order to identify their role in the organization of educational and cognitive activity in conditions of intensive generation of knowledge.
Purpose
This paper aims to explore antecedents and consequences of intra-organizational knowledge hiding.
Design/methodology/approach
A model was developed and tested with data collected from 691 ...knowledge workers from 15 North American credit unions.
Findings
Knowledge hiding and knowledge sharing belong to unique yet possibly overlapping constructs. Individual employees believe that they engage in knowledge hiding to a lesser degree than their co-workers. The availability of knowledge management systems and knowledge policies has no impact on intra-organizational knowledge hiding. The existence of a positive organizational knowledge culture has a negative effect on intra-organizational knowledge hiding. In contrast, job insecurity motivates knowledge hiding. Employees may reciprocate negative knowledge behavior, and knowledge hiding promotes voluntary turnover.
Practical implications
Managers should realize the uniqueness of counterproductive knowledge behavior and develop proactive measures to reduce or eliminate it.
Originality/value
Counterproductive knowledge behavior is dramatically under-represented in knowledge management research, and this study attempts to fill that void.
Knowledge withholding (KW) is a relatively recent multidimensional construct in the knowledge management literature. A diverse and polymathic series of studies has aimed to understand the conceptual ...and empirical inconsistencies associated with KW. Based on a systematic literature review, in this paper, we examine and discuss theoretical backgrounds, antecedents, consequents, and methodological choices related to KW research by reviewing papers published between 2000 and 2021. Results show differences between KW-related constructs, namely knowledge hiding and knowledge hoarding, offering an integrative view of the phenomena. Findings clarify differences between KW constructs. This paper also offers insight into future research directions related to KW by elaborating on identified inconsistencies and gaps. Our work contributions include an overview and clarification of the KW research agenda, proposing a comprehensive analytic framework that aims to guide future research and serve practical implications.

John Campbell and Ove Pedersen examine how knowledge regimes are organized, operate, and have changed over the last thirty years in the United States, France, Germany, and Denmark. They show how there are persistent national differences in how policy ideas are produced. Some countries do so in contentious, politically partisan ways, while others are cooperative and consensus oriented. They find that while knowledge regimes have adopted some common practices since the 1970s, tendencies toward convergence have been limited and outcomes have been heavily shaped by national contexts.

Pre-existing knowledge buried in manufacturing enterprises can be reused to help decision-makers develop good judgements to make decisions about the problems in new product development, which in turn ...speeds up and improves the quality of product innovation. This paper presents a graph-based approach to knowledge reuse for supporting knowledge-driven decision-making in new product development. The paper first illustrates the iterative process of knowledge-driven decision-making in new product development. Then, a novel framework is proposed to facilitate this process, where knowledge maps and knowledge navigation are involved. Here, OWL ontologies are employed to construct knowledge maps, which appropriately capture and organise knowledge resources generated at various stages of product lifecycle; the Personalised PageRank algorithm is used to perform knowledge navigation, which finds the most relevant knowledge in knowledge maps for a given problem in new product development. Finally, the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach are demonstrated through a case study and two performance evaluation experiments.
