On coming out and Related Constructions in Polish The aim of the present paper is to discuss the English lexical borrowing coming out, together with some related constructions, used in Polish. The ...construction in question was originally used in Polish in LGBT community to denote the process of disclosing one’s own non-heterosexual orientation; now, however, it has significantly expanded its range of contexts. The construction is thus used in many different contexts, connected with e.g. one’s religion, details about one’s earnings, etc. Interestingly enough, the meaning of other constructions, such as outing, has not been extended. In the article, descriptions of the meanings of the forms in question have been illustrated with numerous examples taken from the National Corpus of Polish (NKJP) and the MoncoPL Corpus.

The authors consider transmission and text ...history and discuss problems in connection with the comparison of the two known copies, including an analysis of their individual linguistic features. The study points to the east Baltic region as the most likely place for the provenience and/or copying of the phrasebook.
This paper explores the context in which the laws of the Habsburg Empire were translated into Romanian for the province Bukovina and identifies three periods of translation corresponding to the major ...administrative transformations and to the evolution of the Romanian juridical style. The role of the translations is analysed in the process of cultural transfer between the centre and the periphery, the main focus is on the linguistic strategies employed by the translators who had thus to compensate for the still undeveloped Romanian legal thinking and terminology. The impact of the translations on the cultural and linguistic becoming of Romania is evaluated.
The presence of English as a global language in the lexicon of the languages of Europe is undeniable, Spanish being no exception to this general trend. The increasing impact of English on the ...European Spanish word-stock is evidenced by semantic and lexical borrowings. The aim of the present article is to study such semantic and lexical borrowings from English into European Spanish. In order to carry out the research, examples were retrieved from the sub-corpora of tourism and fashion, both part of the ANGLICOR corpus and its associated database. Following identification, the examples were analyzed qualitatively following Gómez Capuz’s classification (2004). The results of this analysis reveal, on the one hand, the fact that semantic borrowings may belong to the category of adjectives as well as the category of nouns. In the case of lexical borrowings, on the other hand, only nouns or noun groups, following various patterns, were recorded.
This paper presents a statistical analysis of Romanian lexical borrowings of German origin, with the initials A, B and C, excerpted from the dictionaries DA/DLR, DEX ’98 and DELR, in terms of ...etymology: single or multiple German etymology, linguistic calques, words with uncertain etymology or words for which German is a wrong etymology.

Abstract One of the major issues in historical and contact linguistics is how to distinguish between inherited and acquired vocabulary in a given language: both traditional historical linguistics and ...modern contact linguistics are in this respect eventually forced to resort to inferences. The aim of this paper is to propose a diagnostic test to aid in the identification of putative substratum relics in the lexicon. The method for this test consists in juxtaposing and comparing word families in the source and recipient language. We use the example of Yiddish-Slavic language contact, in which contact-induced changes are still relatively transparent. We employ wordnets – digital networks of lexical entities connected by lexico-semantic relations – in order to visually “map” lexical and semantic relations of transferred lexemes within the recipient language onto the source language. The method allows us to combine contemporary empirical data with historical analysis.
