Most people think of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) as a distinctly British product. Begun in England 150 years ago, it took more than 60 years to complete and, when it was finally finished in ...1928, the British prime minister heralded it as a 'national treasure'. It maintained this image throughout the twentieth century, and in 2006 the English public voted it an 'Icon of England', alongside Marmite, Buckingham Palace and the bowler hat. However, this book shows that the dictionary is not as 'British' as we all thought. The linguist and lexicographer, Sarah Ogilvie, combines her insider knowledge and experience with impeccable research to show that the OED is in fact an international product in both its content and its making. She examines the policies and practices of the various editors, applies qualitative and quantitative analysis, and finds new OED archival materials in the form of letters, reports and proofs. She demonstrates that the OED, in its use of readers from all over the world and its coverage of World English, is in fact a global text.
Problems in Lexicography is an essential, classic work of practical lexicography (the practice of writing dictionaries) and meta-lexicography. Originally published over sixty years ago, it was based ...on the proceedings of the Indiana University Conference on Lexicography, held November 11–12, 1960. It set a standard that still holds today, three generations later. This critical and historical edition, brilliantly researched and presented by Michael Adams, explores the enduring legacy of this classic work and promises to extend its life further into the twenty-first century. Problems in Lexicography: A Critical / Historical Edition amply demonstrates that this unique work is a book of historical significance and a worthy prologue to lexicography's present.
The following report gives a brief overview of the international summer term of the Master’s Degree Erasmus Mundus in Lexicography (EMLex), which took place in 2020 at the University of Santiago de ...Compostela. The COVID pandemic further awakened the imagination of the lexicographic community.
Dictionaries are either restrictive or extensive. For the entry «Freedom», they are more or less all extensive, except for the tourist glossaries. This is because this word is the heart of human ...life. And that it follows the evolution of history. The word “Freedom” proves that the dictionary is a democratic text, and a “land of freedom”.
