There is strong evidence that when two people talk to each other, they tend to converge, or align, on common ways of speaking (e.g.,
Pickering and Garrod, 2004). In this paper, we discuss possible ...mechanisms that might lead to linguistic alignment, contrasting mechanisms that are encapsulated within the language processing system, and so unmediated by beliefs about the interlocutor, with mechanisms that are mediated by beliefs about the interlocutor and that are concerned with considerations of either communicative success or social affect. We consider how these mechanisms might be implicated in human–computer interaction (HCI), and then review recent empirical studies that investigated linguistic alignment in HCI. We argue that there is strong evidence that alignment occurs in HCI, but that it differs in important ways from that found in interactions between humans: It is generally stronger and has a larger mediated component that is concerned with enhancing communicative success.

There is mounting evidence that language users are sensitive to distributional information at many grain-sizes. Much of this research has focused on the distributional properties of words, the units ...they consist of (morphemes, phonemes), and the syntactic structures they appear in (verb-categorization frames, syntactic constructions). In a series of studies we show that comprehenders are also sensitive to the frequencies of compositional four-word phrases (e.g. don’t have to worry): more frequent phrases are processed faster. The effect is not reducible to the frequency of the individual words or substrings and is observed across the entire frequency range (for low, mid and high frequency phrases). Comprehenders seem to learn and store frequency information about multi-word phrases. These findings call for processing models that can capture and predict phrase-frequency effects and support accounts where linguistic knowledge consists of patterns of varying sizes and levels of abstraction.
Parole chiave: lessico marinaresco, ittionimia, lingua sardaAbstract: Sardinia, for historical reasons, does not have traditions in the maritime field, but its inhabitants allowed foreign peoples (first Catalans and Spaniards, then fishermen from Campania, Sicily, and Liguria) to take care of professions related to the sea. As a result, the relevant lexicon in this linguistic sphere is composite and entirely borrowed from other languages. The essay specifically focuses on the contributions of Catalan to the nautical and fishing lexicon, which appear substantial and pervasive, covering various areas ranging from port and fishermen terms, along with their respective equipment, to the humblest names of sea fish, crustaceans, and mollusks. Keywords: Maritime lexicon, ichthyonymia, Sardinian language
