Clarivate Analytics’s Web of Science (WoS) is the world’s leading scientific citation search and analytical information platform. It is used as both a research tool supporting a broad array of ...scientific tasks across diverse knowledge domains as well as a dataset for large-scale data-intensive studies. WoS has been used in thousands of published academic studies over the past 20 years. It is also the most enduring commercial legacy of Eugene Garfield. Despite the central position WoS holds in contemporary research, the quantitative impact of WoS has not been previously examined by rigorous scientific studies. To better understand how this key piece of Eugene Garfield’s heritage has contributed to science, we investigated the ways in which WoS (and associated products and features) is mentioned in a sample of 19,478 English-language research and review papers published between 1997 and 2017, as indexed in WoS databases. We offered descriptive analyses of the distribution of the papers across countries, institutions and knowledge domains. We also used natural language processingtechniques to identify the verbs and nouns in the abstracts of these papers that are grammatically connected to WoS-related phrases. This is the first study to empirically investigate the documentation of the use of the WoS platform in published academic papers in both scientometric and linguistic terms.
The last decade has witnessed rapid development in the literature on public–private partnerships (PPPs); however, there have been few attempts to map the global research in this domain. To identify ...the state of the field and trends in PPP research, the CiteSpace software package was used in this study to conduct a series of content analyses and examine global patterns among publications, including the distribution of core authors and institutions; high-frequency categories and keywords; journal and author contributions; highly cited papers and hot topics of research; and trends with regard to co-author analysis, co-word analysis, co-citation analysis, and particularly cluster analysis. We present all research focuses in a scientometric way and arrive at the following findings. First, the most significant developments and progress in PPP research have occurred primarily in China, the US, the UK and Australia. Second, the existing studies in the field of PPP research focus primarily on Engineering, Business and Economics, and Public Administration. Third, the emerging trends in PPP research have shifted away from concession pricing and concession periods, PPP legislation, procurement management, critical success factors, value for money and PPP project governance toward risk allocation, performance evaluation, renegotiation of concession contracts, real option evaluation and contract management, which are likely to define the new research frontier in the field of PPP research.
In this conceptual piece we suggest that the institutional perspective is a prolific lens to study digital innovation and transformation. Digital innovation is about the creation and putting into ...action of novel products and services; by digital transformation we mean the combined effects of several digital innovations bringing about novel actors (and actor constellations), structures, practices, values, and beliefs that change, threaten, replace or complement existing rules of the game within organizations and fields. We identify three types of novel institutional arrangements critical for digital transformation: digital organizational forms, digital institutional infrastructures, and digital institutional building blocks. From this vantage point, an institutional perspective invites us to examine how these novel arrangements gain social approval (i.e. legitimacy) in the eyes of critical stakeholders and their interplay with existing institutional arrangements. Questioning the disruptive talk associated with digital transformation, we draw on the institutional change literature to illustrate the institutionalization challenges and that existing institutional arrangements are pivotal arbiters in deciding whether and how novel arrangements gain acceptance. We close this essay with discussing the implications of an institutional perspective on digital transformation for policy, practice and research.
The metaverse has the potential to extend the physical world using augmented and virtual reality technologies allowing users to seamlessly interact within real and simulated environments using ...avatars and holograms. Virtual environments and immersive games (such as, Second Life, Fortnite, Roblox and VRChat) have been described as antecedents of the metaverse and offer some insight to the potential socio-economic impact of a fully functional persistent cross platform metaverse. Separating the hype and “meta…” rebranding from current reality is difficult, as “big tech” paints a picture of the transformative nature of the metaverse and how it will positively impact people in their work, leisure, and social interaction. The potential impact on the way we conduct business, interact with brands and others, and develop shared experiences is likely to be transformational as the distinct lines between physical and digital are likely to be somewhat blurred from current perceptions. However, although the technology and infrastructure does not yet exist to allow the development of new immersive virtual worlds at scale - one that our avatars could transcend across platforms, researchers are increasingly examining the transformative impact of the metaverse. Impacted sectors include marketing, education, healthcare as well as societal effects relating to social interaction factors from widespread adoption, and issues relating to trust, privacy, bias, disinformation, application of law as well as psychological aspects linked to addiction and impact on vulnerable people. This study examines these topics in detail by combining the informed narrative and multi-perspective approach from experts with varied disciplinary backgrounds on many aspects of the metaverse and its transformational impact. The paper concludes by proposing a future research agenda that is valuable for researchers, professionals and policy makers alike.

Despite increasing awareness of the need to trace the trajectory of innovation system research, so far little attention has been given to quantitative depiction of the evolution of this fast-moving ...research field. This paper uses CiteSpace to demonstrate visually intellectual structures and developments. The study uses citation analysis to detect and visualize disciplinary distributions, keyword co-word networks and journal cocitation networks, highly cited references, as well as highly cited authors to identify intellectual turning points, pivotal points and emerging trends, in innovation systems system research from 1975 to 2012.
Characterizing the structure of knowledge, the evolution of research topics, and the emergence of topics has always been an important part of information science (IS). Our previous scientometric ...review of IS provided a snapshot of this fast-growing field up to the end of 2008. This new study aims to identify emerging trends and new developments appearing in the subsequent 7574 articles published in 10 IS journals between 2009 and 2016, including 20,960 references. The results of a document co-citation analysis show great changes in the research topics in the IS domain. The positions of certain core topics found in the previous study, namely, information retrieval, webometrics, and citation behavior, have been replaced by scientometric indicators (H-index), citation analysis (citation performance and bibliometrics), scientific collaboration, and information behavior in the most recent period of 2009–2016. Dual-map overlays of journals show that the knowledge base of IS research has shifted considerably since 2010, with emerging topics including scientific evaluation indicators, altmetrics, science mapping and visualization, bibliometrics, citation analysis, and scientific collaboration.
Une nouvelle médiathèque tournée vers l’innovation et l’inclusion sociale ouvre ses portes. La fréquentation est au rendez-vous mais les situations d’accueil souvent difficiles. Suite à des faits de ...violence, elle est contrainte de fermer. Lorsqu’elle rouvre quelques semaines plus tard, la sérénité est revenue, durablement. Une recherche-intervention, conduite pendant deux ans par une psychosociologue spécialiste des jeunes et des questions urbaines a été un facteur décisif pour traverser la crise. Initiée pour analyser le rôle social de la médiathèque 3ème lieu, ses fonctions et ses limites, dans un contexte de forte mixité sociale, elle s’est prolongée par un collectif de réflexion, formé de deux chercheurs, Joëlle Bordet, psychosociologue et Christophe Evans, sociologue (Bpi), ainsi que de trois bibliothécaires, Hélène Beunon (ABF), Marion Moulin et Raphaële Gilbert. Ce livre est une invitation à continuer à penser à la médiathèque pendant la crise mais aussi à repenser la médiathèque à travers la crise. Comment inventer une nouvelle approche lorsqu’une situation difficile nous porte plutôt vers la sidération ? Comment accepter l’irruption du réel dans nos idéaux sans pour autant renoncer à notre horizon démocratique ? Le processus de traversée de la crise qui est présenté ici a conduit, bien au-delà d’une résolution des difficultés, à porter un nouveau regard sur la médiathèque, ses missions, son lien au territoire et aux partenaires, ses modalités d’accueil, le modèle du 3ème lieu qui l’avait inspirée.
Digital transformation approaches outside the public sector are changing citizens' expectations of governments' ability to deliver high-value, real-time digital services. In response to the changing ...expectations and triggered by supranational agreements, governments are changing their mode of operation to improve public service delivery, be more efficient and effective in their designs, and achieve objectives such as increased transparency, interoperability, or citizen satisfaction. However, beyond the availability of consultancy reports, there is little systematic insight into the way that public administrators themselves are currently defining digital transformation in their own day-to-day practices, how they are approaching digital transformation projects, and what their expected outcomes are. We provide an empirically-based definition of digital transformation derived from expert interviews and develop a conceptual framework with reasons for, processes to, and expected outcomes of digital transformation in the public sector.
