Quarantine and spatial distancing measures associated with COVID-19 resulted in substantial changes to individuals' everyday lives. In this repeated assessment study, we assessed Australian university students' media use (i.e., listening to music, playing video/computer games, watching TV/movies/streaming videos, and using social media) throughout early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia, and determined whether media use was related to changes in life satisfaction. Participants (
= 127) were asked to complete six online questionnaires, capturing pre- and during-pandemic experiences. The results indicated that media use varied substantially throughout the study period, and at the within-person level, life satisfaction was positively associated with music listening and negatively associated with watching TV/videos/movies. The findings highlight the potential benefits of music listening during COVID-19 and other periods of social isolation.
In recent years, many research efforts have been focused on investigation of potential connection between social networking and mental health issues. Particularly important and controversial remains ...the association between Facebook use, self-esteem and life satisfaction. In our cross-sectional study, on a sample of 381 Facebook users, we tested the existence and strength of this relationship using Bergen Facebook Addiction Scale (BFAS), Facebook Intensity Scale (FBI), Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale (SES), and Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS). With k-means cluster analysis, we divided the sample into 3 groups: ordinary, intensive, and addicted Facebook users. The results of our study show that ordinary Facebook users differ statistically in self-esteem and life satisfaction from both addicted and intensive users. Facebook addiction was in relation with lower self-esteem. Facebook addiction was also negatively related to life satisfaction. These results are in accordance with the previously published findings of other authors in the fields of social networking psychology and psychiatry.

In this study, it was aimed to examine the eating behaviors and life satisfaction of individuals who regularly exercise in sports centers in terms of different variables. The present study sought to provide a test of the integrated broaden-and-build model of positive emotions that incorporates components of hope (agency & pathways) as hypothesized predictors of life ...satisfaction in a community sample of 171 (137 female & 34 male) Argentinian adults who have been victims of interpersonal aggression. Results of testing for mediation, controlling for negative mood, indicated that positive mood had indirect effects on life satisfaction through hope agency, but not through hope pathways. Importantly, the direct effect of positive mood on life satisfaction became nonsignificant after accounting for hope. Thus, we found evidence for full mediation involving hope agency. Taken together, these findings provide further evidence for the importance of hope agency, but not hope pathways, as an important mechanism that might account for how positive mood fosters well-being in diverse adult populations.

What is the impact of dispositional gratitude on well-being? By synthesizing the literature, we evaluate the association between dispositional gratitude and mental well-being as a function of its ...various categories (i.e., positive, negative), dimensions (i.e., subjective, psychological), and indicators (e.g., life satisfaction, happiness, stress). Our meta-analytic aggregation of 404 effect sizes from 158 independent samples (N = 100,099) provides evidence that dispositional gratitude is moderately to strongly correlated with well-being, and that the strength of these associations varies by the indicator of well-being. We also examine potential moderators (i.e., religiosity, individualistic orientation, age, gender, dispositional gratitude measure, and sample type) of the association between dispositional gratitude and well-being. We find that country-level individualistic orientation, sample mean age, and sample type (i.e., clinical vs. non-clinical) present moderating effects for several of the relationships examined. We conclude the paper by presenting avenues for future research.
This paper argues that life satisfaction data can be used to value natural disasters. We discuss the strengths of this approach, compare it to traditional methods and apply it to estimate and ...monetize utility losses caused by floods in 16 European countries between 1973 and 1998. Using combined cross-section and time-series data, we find a negative impact of floods on life satisfaction that is sizeable, robust and significant. The estimates are comparable to price discounts found in housing markets. In an exploratory analysis, we find that risk transfer mechanisms such as mandatory insurance have large mitigating effects.

Ziel dieses Beitrags ist es, den Einfluss der physischen Attraktivität auf unterschiedliche Aspekte der Lebenszufriedenheit empirisch zu überprüfen. Dies wird auf Basis theoretischer ...Überlegungen mit den Daten aus dem Kölner Gymnasiasten-Panel geprüft, das die private sowie die berufliche Situation der Befragten im modalen Alter von 30, 43, 56 und 66 Jahren abbildet. Für einen Teil der Befragten wurde im Nachhinein die physische Attraktivität im Alter von 16 Jahren ermittelt. Unter Kontrolle des Berufsprestiges, des Erwerbsstatus, der Wochenarbeitszeit und dem Vorliegen von Arbeitslosigkeit wird ein signifikanter Attraktivitätseffekt auf die berufliche Lebenszufriedenheit im Alter von 30 Jahren nachgewiesen. In Bezug auf die private Lebenszufriedenheit findet sich kein substanzieller Attraktivitätseffekt. Nichtsdestotrotz besitzt die physische Attraktivität im Alter von 16 Jahren einen signifikanten Effekt auf die allgemeine Lebenszufriedenheit im Alter von 30 und 43 Jahren unter Kontrolle der privaten und beruflichen Lebenszufriedenheit. Der Effekt im Alter von 43 Jahren bleibt auch dann bestehen, wenn für die allgemeine Lebenszufriedenheit im Alter von 30 Jahren kontrolliert wird. Mit dieser Untersuchung wird also ein langfristiger Effekt der äußeren Erscheinung auf verschiedene Aspekte der Lebenszufriedenheit nachgewiesen. Insbesondere der Einfluss auf die allgemeine Lebenszufriedenheit sei herausgestellt. Hier besitzt die physische Attraktivität einen fast drei Dekaden währenden, die Zufriedenheit steigernden Nachhall.
The COVID-19 pandemic as a public health issue has spread to the rest of the world. Although the wellbeing and emotional resilience of healthcare professionals are key components of continuing ...healthcare services during the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare professionals have been observed in this period to experience serious psychological problems and to be at risk in terms of mental health. Therefore, this study aims to probe psychological resilience of healthcare workers. The findings of this study showed that in order to raise psychological resilience of healthcare professionals working during the COVID-19 pandemic their quality of sleep, positive emotions and life satisfaction need to be enhanced. Psychological resilience levels of healthcare workers in their later years were found to be higher. Doctors constitute the group with the lowest levels of psychological resilience among healthcare workers. The current study is considered to have contributed to the literature in this regard. Primary needs such as sleep which are determinants of quality of life, life satisfaction and psychological resilience should be met.
Microcredit has long been hailed as a powerful tool to promote livelihoods and reduce poverty through entrepreneurship. However, its impacts on people's subjective well-being remain underexplored. We ...present a unified theoretical framework for analyzing the effect of microcredit-enabled entrepreneurship on overall life satisfaction – a key manifestation of subjective well-being. Empirically, we apply an instrumental variable approach to a unique census-like household survey conducted in three villages of Bangladesh in 2013. In spite of having no direct effects, we find that microcredit borrowing has an indirect negative effect on overall life satisfaction, through increased worry. On a positive note, we find that female micro-borrowers experience an increase in satisfaction with financial security and achievement in life. We also provide evidence that micro-borrowers with higher levels of assets experience an increase in satisfaction with financial security.
